During the time of hurricane Katrina, Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans was out of power, running water and temperature rose to 100 degrees. Reports of inadequate triage processes for evacuation and lack or leadership quickly followed. Eventually, forty-five bodies were found in the devastated health center during recovery efforts. Physician Anna Pou together with two other nurses allegedly “hastened” the patients’ deaths by injecting them with lethal doses of morphine. Pou defended herself by saying she merely helped the patients through their pain and holds that stand up until now. A recent court decision required the institution to pay an amount of $25 million to the individuals who took shelter at that hospital and sustained injuries and died. This decision was based upon the lack of preparedness of the hospital for such disasters and its failure to operate in a highly emergent situation. In this episode groups four and five. The fourth group started off discussing their assigned topic operations and crew resource management, touching on specific subjects such as scene operations, bystander’s safety response policies, situational awareness and team work and scheduling and communications.  On that note, they came up with questions like where is EMS  now, where does EMS want to be, what do they want to do in a strategy perspective, and what are the obstacles and barriers and answered those questions to put things into perspective. The fifth group followed with their topic on vehicle safety tackling aspects like vehicle design and provider practices when on board the ambulance. One of the things that came up was the provider culture or using seat belts and finding ways to secure equipment and passengers alike while providing care. They recommended was putting out a mandate that requires providers to use seat belts and a possible obstacle that can hinder this progression EMS would be attitude and culture. Here they have a discussion with American Airlines' 12-year chief safety officer, Scott Griffith. Although not involved in any particular field of EMS or medical service, Scott was part of the community of aviation leaders that developed the "Just Culture" concept which refers to notions of justice that is how to be fair and consistent in how we respond to human beings who work in high risk industry such as EMS. Later on in the discussion, they were joined by prehospital researcher Blair Baygum and EMS 10 award winner Daniel Patterson of University of Pittsburgh. They highlight what they thought was important for EMS safety and patient safety.  They packaged that presentation in a set of myths and provide some data to dispel those myths and also provided a frame of reference for some of the data that exist out there that characterizes one or more attributes of safety culture in EMS versus other settings. They gave the audience basically a frame of reference of where EMS might be and where EMS might want to go. Problems can cause abnormal heart rhythms, called arrhythmias. There are many types of arrhythmia. During an arrhythmia, the heart can beat too fast, too slow, or it can stop beating. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart develops an arrhythmia that causes it to stop beating. This is different than a heart attack, where the heart usually continues to beat but blood flow to the heart is blocked. In this week's follow up episode from the previous NREMT Cardiac Skills Part 1, the podmedic provides additional tips for the NREMT skills for cardiac arrest management as well as tips and what to remember when taking this skills station.
