What you might not know is that it has peripheral opioid receptor activity and is gaining attention as a drug with abuse potential. In therapeutic doses, it’s not expected to cause central nervous system effects because a protein (P-glycoprotein) that pumps drugs out of cells prevents it from crossing the blood-brain barrier. And so, sedation, euphoria, and respiratory depression are not seen in therapeutic doses. Check out this segment with Lisa Booze from the Maryland Poison Center as she tells us about this often overlooked drug of abuse. — EMS Tip of the Week: Scott Cravens on Last Year’s EMS World Expo EMS World Expo is just around the corner coming up in October and I will be back there in the Physio-Control sponsored podcast studio. We’ll be back in New Orleans with Chris Montera from the EMS Garage, Sam Bradley from the Disaster Podcast and more. Because it’s coming so close, here’s the interview we did last year with Scott Cravens, the Publisher of EMS World magazine and EMSWorld.com.
