Recently, an American dentist paid $50,000 to shoot and kill a lion in Africa. This lion was well-known and beloved by tourists and locals in Zimbabwe. Although the world was outraged, what this man did was perfectly legal. Although groups like LionAid and White Lion Trust, amongst others have been educating the world about the dwindling global lion population, they are still not a protected species. Industry continues to claim neonicotinoids have little to no impact on honeybees but there are numerous studies, especially this particular study which prove the devastating impact. The research conducted by Dr. Randolf Menzel is solid proof that neonicotinoids do interfere with specific components of navigation in honeybees. This research was published almost two years ago and has also never been negated. Why? It's simple. The research is concrete. Dr. Menzel pioneered the honeybee as a model system in neuroscience with respect to color vision, olfaction, learning, and memory. Combining levels of analysis from natural behavior to single neurons, he traced perceptual and cognitive capacities to their neural and cellular substrates. He established the first evidence for the role of the insect mushroom body in memory formation and characterized the cellular and neural correlates of different phases of memory. His latest research explores the use of three neonicotinoids, (neonicotinoids, imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiacloprid) and their impact on honeybee navigation.
