Nicole Lipkin on Engagement and Emotional Contagion | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:20:00

Nicole Lipkin, author of What Keeps Leaders Up at Night, wants us to know that our brains are more sensitive than we think, susceptible to what is called "emotional contagion." That's when someone's "negative emotions spread virally" where our brains pick up on someone else's mood and mimic that emotion. That means if one employee is feeling disengaged, that feeling will spread. Added to the other symptoms like declines in productivity, performance, safety, retention and profits, this makes disengagement one of the most pervasive and unremarked upon problems in the workplace. Luckily, Nicole has ways to combat disengagement and get teams back on track. NICOLE LIPKIN, a sought-after speaker and consultant, holds a doctorate in Clinical Psychology as well as an MBA. She has shared her expertise on NPR, NBC, CBS, Fox Business News, and other high-profile media outlets.  Thomas Davenport on Keeping Up with the Quants | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:17

Thomas Davenport, business analytics expert, believes that analytics are an important decision-making tool for all levels of an organization. Everyone has received credit card offers in the mail from Capital One but not everyone realizes that our response to those offers is carefully monitored. If a 12.9 percent balance transfer offer doesn't generate a response, soon a 12.8 offer will arrive in the mail. If a red envelope doesn't get someone's attention, soon a blue envelope will arrive. Capital One doesn't stop there, continuing to keep track of their customers so they know that it is a valued customer on the phone to close their account and that they should be transferred to a customer service specialist right away who can make deals and keep the customer. This focus on analytics even on the front-side of the company has returned more value to Capital One shareholders than any other company in the United States. That is just one example of a company using analytics to help make faster, more informed decisions. Thomas Davenport is a renowned thought-leader who has helped hundreds of companies worldwide to revitalize their management practices. He combines his interests in business, research, and academia as the Presidentrsquo;s Distinguished Professor in Management and Information Technology at Babson College and as a Visiting Professor at the Harvard Business School for the 2012-2013 academic year. Hersquo;s also co-founder and research director of the International Institute for Analytics, and a Senior Advisor to Deloitte Analytics. Hersquo;s the author of several books, most recently Keeping Up With the Quants: Your Guide to Understanding and Using Analytics.  Pamela Ryckman on Women Networking Outside the Company | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:17:08

Traditionally men have dominated the C-suite with one token spot open for a woman, if that. This made it nearly impossible for women to network within their organization as, at the end of the day, only one of them would get the corner office. This forced women to network outside their companies but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise: women made different connections that led to unexpected lateral career moves, paving their own way to success.Pamela Ryckman, author of the book Stiletto Network, investigated this trend and talks about how modern women network and achieve success, starting from the entry level and moving up. Pamela Ryckman is a freelance journalist who has written for the New York Times, Financial Times, and, The New York Sun among other publications and websites. Before becoming a journalist, Ryckman performed strategy work for Merrill Lynchrsquo;s Global Markets and Investment Banking Group and for Goldman, Sachs Co.rsquo;s Equities Financial and Strategic Management Group.  Clayton Christensen on Disruptive Innovation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:22:53

While most companies focus on Sustaining Innovation (making existing products better), really successful companies branch into Disruptive Innovation and create new products or make existing products available to those who don't have access to them. It seems like a win-win situation since the only competition to disruptive innovation is non-consumption; when the product is something like green energy provided to developing nations, this is unquestionably a good thing for the consumer and for the provider. However, as our guest Clayton Christensen warns, these innovations take years to germinate. Businesses who wait until they are in the red to start thinking about Disruptive Innovation are already too late. No matter how your company is faring, it's never too soon to think about your disruptive innovation. Clayton Christensen is the Kim B. Clark Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School, where he teaches one of the most popular elective classes for second year students, Building and Sustaining a Successful Enterprise. He is regarded as one of the worldrsquo;s top experts on innovation and growth and his ideas have been widely used in industries and organizations throughout the world. Clay is the best-selling author of nine books and more than a hundred articles. His first book, The Innovatorrsquo;s Dilemma received the Global Business Book Award as the best business book of the year (1997); and in 2011 The Economist named it as one of the six most important books about business ever written.
