As I've mentioned before, I get a lot of response to this daily emails. It may seem like it's a lot of negative, since I use the trolls to teach you lessons, but I get a lot of love too. Then, the next day… "Let me just say, I have never replied to anyone's emails that I subscribe to, this makes two days in a row! Hell, I don't read 99% of them but I find myself looking forward to yours everyday. I wanted to reply to this email because it hit home with me. My husband (and I) are members of the Freedom Club and we l.o.v.e it.... but we have been skipping around. See, we paid for (Someone Else's Course) and were totally bummed that we paid $1,000 for it. It had some good content, but he said it was a step by step process. As an engineer (my husband) and former (now housewife) project manager (me :)), we took step by step somewhat literal, and we were disappointed. We really didn't realize how disappointed we were until we joined the (Someone Else's Course) Facebook group and people were asking the same questions we had. Most of the time their questions were answered by group members, or the course creator, with something along the line of "stop overthinking it" and, almost always, #followthesystem. We would be glad to, but felt there really wasn't an actionable system to follow. Maybe his course is a left brain/right brain thing?? We laugh that it almost felt like taking an art class. HA! We were jaded, but decided to sign up for the Freedom Club because the financial risk was *so small*. We were happy to find out it is exactly what we thought we were getting with (Someone Else's Course), step by step actionable items! So, we skipped to the Online Course Academy so we can finish up the course we have been working on. But once we were done watching it, we went back to the beginning so we can make sure we are following the system you guys have created, it's great! This morning I was reading a book that had a chapter on self-efficacy. In that chapter it talked about the 4 aspects of confidence. Under the second aspect, called Vicarious Learning, I realized where my grandma got her most used saying. My grandma would say, "If someone else has done it, you can do it too. If no one else has done it, you can be the first!" She said that to me MANY times throughout my life, mostly when I was little. When you're little, you just believe your grandma, why wouldn't you?! As I got older, I wondered where she got that quote, if anywhere. I think I figured it out. In the Vicarious Learning section of the book, I saw several quotes that could very well have been the inspiration for her most said quote. "If it's within someone's power to achieve something, know that it's within your power to achieve that thing." ~Marcus Aurelius "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't - you're right." - Henry Ford My grandma was an avid reader, but she wasn't so good on giving credit where credit was due. If someone else had done it, I really had it in the back of my mind that I could too. The point stuck with me and was the basis for all the crazy things I did throughout my life. Even now, as logical as I can be, there is a little voice in the back of my head that says, "ya so what Elon Musk is the only human to create a 3 billion dollar business, you could too if you wanted!" I got another email I want to talk to you about. It’s from a VIP Freedom Club member, my favorite type of person, so I thought I’d address it here. My comments will, of course, be after the email. “...Jeremy seems awfully angry these days, so I figured I'd reach out to you… I was kind of joking about Jeremy although it's definitely a switch in tone from pre-everyday emails. Mostly I like it. Sometimes it feels strange. Like he's trying on a persona. Maybe when contrasted to the tone in Freedom Formula, which I listened to over the course of a couple days, it's more striking. “ ~Brett ---Have you heard of the fictional characters called Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde? In the story, Dr. Jekyll is a nice, friendly, well-made man with many friends. He is liked and he represses his dark side so those around him have no idea what lurks inside. Mr. Hyde is his dark side, who is always trying to come out. Eventually, he starts to take over and Dr. Jekyll has to make a serum he must take to stop Mr. Hyde from surfacing. After 13 years of doing business, I found several things… I thought you just had to be nice to everyone to do business, so I only showed that part of my personality. I was ‘rated G’, super nice on my podcast, in my boring-ass emails, and in my courses. I recently realized that all the mentors I most look up to are only nice in ONE PLACE. ...in their courses. In their emails and on their marketing they were very hardcore honest. They didn’t hold anything back and truly said it like it is when they talk to ‘prospects’. You had to earn their amiable behavior by buying their courses, completing the Value Cycle and proving you deserved it. I decided to do a test. I decided to be the WHOLE me. Not just the nice side, but the whole, real, deep, complex human being I am. I decided to give those that were considering buying the good, the bad, and the handsomely ugly parts of me. My mentors said that is the part you have to be transparent about, you. I wasn’t doing that. I was the Disney version of me, but no more. I unleashed Mr. Hyde. In return, to complete the Value Cycle (I talk about in the Freedom Club), I decided to add all 10 of my courses into one place. One of the big, positive outcomes from having a successful freedom business is you can create the lifestyle you want. Do anything you want during the day. Stay up as late as you want. Wake up when you want. Create value when you want. Be around who ever you want. I've done it all since my freedom business took off back in about 2006 (I started in 2004, but it took a while to learn about designed my lifestyle.) That was when the money made it so I could really live a "free" life. The spontaneity was fun for a while, but then things changed. I changed... I never thought I'd say this but I love routine. I have a very specific routine now. I now choose to get my "work" done right when I get up. It can take about an hour or two, then I have the rest of the day to do what I want. Creating value in the morning, spontaneity after that. This is all because I learned about the Freedom Formula. Before I knew what it was I started a business that sucked my energy every day. I was working about 12 hours a day, everyday, even weekends. Then I met Jason, co-creator of Internet Business Mastery, and we talked all about the downsides of creating the wrong business. We had both done that with our first business because no one taught us the Freedom Formula. We didn't have mentors back then, just our little two-man mastermind. We didn't even know what we were doing was masterminding. Normally, when you get asked this obvious and persistent question it's pretty easy to answer. What do you do for a living? I'm a lawyer. I'm chief sandwich maker. I'm a professor. I'm President of the United States. The answer’s simple for most people. When I first started this journey to building a successful freedom business, I didn't know what to say. The answer was always slightly awkward. Since, "What do you do for a living?", is such a constantly used question I fumbled around for years with the answer. Basically, I was selling information, but most people don't understand that that is a thing. "I sell stuff online." Back in 2004, this answer seemed to lead to people thinking I was somehow into porn or I was doing spam. "I have an eBay business." This answer seemed to make people think I was going to yard sales, buying other peoples used junk, and selling it on eBay. "I'm a cubicle escape artist." This one would get a grin, but mostly I'd see the thought, "Fine, don't tell me..." Once Pat Flynn, my most visibly successful student, became a #1 bestseller and topped the podcasting charts, I'd say, "I make Pat Flynns." This one would get blank stares from people that didn't know him and surprised nods of approval from those that did. Now, I say what makes me happy. I realized that most people ask this question for something to say and really it's for me to declare my identity to others. My answer now: "I provide knowledge for potential winners to become successful winners." I'm told I'm a bit of an ass for saying it the way I say it, but most people just want the answer to easily categorize you. Since that is the case, I want them to either have no idea how to categorize me or think I'm a bit of an arrogant ass or, if they are a winner, they will ask me more about the specifics of what I do. When I taught Pat Flynn, it was quite clear to me he was already a winner (based on his actions and mindset) and just needed the direction and some specifics to become a successful winner. Winners are going to be successful, they just need some direction. Losers go for "free" and "how quickly can I be a millionaire?" and "Ooooo, let's get on this list, then this list, then this list, and on and on." It’s time to pull another email out of the ol’ email bag. I get energy hearing excuses and tearing them to shreds... As always, my comments will follow. “Honestly, I am a waiter... and I don't mean that I serve tables, but that I'm waiting for that "right" feeling. I have tons of skills, but most of my energy is split between my daily employment which takes advantage of those skills and spending time with my family. I have a dream to one day be working for myself on projects I'm passionate about that can help other people, but when I start to plan out the process, I'm overwhelmed or procrastinate. I've owned tons of domains. I have the technical expertise to pull off a good business online... Yet, I'm still living pay to pay working for companies that don't really mentor and guide me to that next level.” ~David P --I was recently reading a book about the U.S Navy Seal team. If somehow you don’t know what they are, they are an elite military unit and they have one of the most grueling, mind and body shredding training there is. Most of the people that try out don’t make it past the initial training. The book is written by one of these elite Navy Seals. One of the things he talked about was the difference between regular people and people who pass the Seal training and go on to become one of this elite fighting force. He said that most people are run by their feelings. They have a feeling, that feeling dictates their behavior and their behaviors are what build their identity. So, David, in your case you are waiting for a feeling to push you to action, so you can take the actions (behavior) needed to become a successful freedom business owner. The Seal said that successful people do it just the opposite. He said the guys that successfully finish the toughest, grueling Seal training ACT like a Navy Seal from the beginning. They take on the identity of a Seal FIRST. They know that ALL the Navy Seals have gone through and FINISHED the exact training they are about to go through, so they decide they are going to finish it before they start, no matter what. They take on the identity FIRST. They decide to be U.S. Navy Seals before they go through the training that is designed to weed out the humans not fit to be Seals. That identity is what decides their behaviors. When they don’t want to or think they can’t do something, the Navy Seal identity they took on says they will. A Navy Seal passes the training no matter what, so they take the actions that lead them to feel like a Seal. This is the mindset you need to take David. As I mentioned recently, I sold my home and gentleman's farm. What triggered me to sell my "dream" home? Lifestyle design. I always wanted to try the gentleman's farm, but with a big modern home. A few episodes ago I told you about the top level, secret mastermind group I made my way into with the guys that make the *real* money online. My life changed the day I watched the movie, the Matrix. I saw it in the theater back in 1999. In fact, I watched it twice in one day and another 3 times in the theater. It seemed like they made the movie for me. No really, I had the creepy feeling that the filmmakers were making movie just for me and where I was in my life. It was eerie. Generally, it's about a bored, office dweller at the point of nihilism that is searching for the truth about life. Boy, does he get it. His world is rocked. It ends up being 1000 bigger than he ever imagined. I was a bored, office dweller too. Like Neo, in the movie, I felt there was more. I felt I was stuck. Life wasn't a movie, it was life, but I wanted something big. It took my almost 5 years from seeing the movie to escape the Matrix myself (triggered by a book, more on that another time,) and now I'm offering you the chance. In my reading time yesterday I came across a quote I want to share with you. I committed knowing there was going to be some high prices to pay. That was the last thing my last boss ever said to me just over 13 years ago. I don't know if he meant to be cliche, it was Hollywood, but he sure was. I was excited to go on the adventure of learning how to start a business and the moment did feel a bit like a movie, but I couldn't believe he said it. "You'll never work in this town again!" I had just quit so I could go start a business. I felt like I couldn't go any further unless I went on this quest. You didn't quit the job you worked that hard to get. I was one of the youngest guys to get THAT job at Warner Brothers movie studio and I can't imagine anyone ever quit that highly coveted job before. I did. I had to. My boss was astonished when I said I quit. He just stood there staring at me. His brow furrowed and he slowly started shaking his head as if to say, you can't do this. Then he blurted it out. "You'll never work in this town again!" Thus ending the 'working for the man' era of my life. He was right, though, I have never worked in Hollywood since. What I have done is dedicate my life to helping others and I was able to make a 7 figure business doing it. I’ve been seeing an annoying trend recently. To be different and “edgy”, I see a lot of people saying that finding your purpose and building a business around it is NOT the way to do it. They say that you should simply find a good market and that is really the only thing to think about. I see a LOT of people saying this now like it’s the new “cool” thing to say. I think that’s stupid. Let’s see what a world famous psychologist that created the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs has to say about the subject after spending his entire career on the study: “The most beautiful fate, the most wonderful good fortune that can happen to any human being, is to be paid for doing that which he passionately loves to do.” ~Abraham Maslow I think I’ll stick to a world-renowned expert rather than an edgy newcomers trying to get attention by being contrarian. My 13+ years of experience proves out Maslow’s quote as well. What I think happens, other than just trying to get attention is that these edgy newcomers can’t figure out how to find their purpose so they can’t be passionate about. It’s one that I think everyone thinks, no matter what other issues they might have. Here is the response and my tough love comment after: “Im afraid of failing and losing money.” ~Cartlon --Here comes my one two punch, ready? 1- There are only two ways to fail. Quitting and not starting. By not starting, you ARE failing. You shouldn’t be afraid of failing in the future, you already are failing RIGHT NOW by not putting your all into starting a freedom business. If you start and decide you are going to keep going UNTIL you succeed, you will never fail. Succeed or die, that is what I decided when I got started. I knew there would be massive challenges and that I wouldn’t get the results I want most of the time, but the only way to fail is to quit… once you get started. 2- Here is the next hard truth, you are already losing money. Had you started when you realized you had the desire to have a freedom business, you’d very likely be making money already. Your hesitance is what you should be fearing. It’s ruining everything. It’s making you fail AND lose money, every single day you don’t go after your dream. It’s no joke. You are already living the nightmare of failing and losing money, my friend. There is one more hard truth for you. 3- You are also completely letting down the audience you could be creating value for RIGHT NOW. Your audience is out there right now, waiting for you to help solve their issue and you are failing at that too. Get your ass in gear. You wouldn’t have the desire to create a freedom business that helps you have the lifestyle you dream about and help your chosen audience if you didn’t have the ability to make it happen. I’ve talked about before, most people don’t even have the desire to create a freedom business. You do! Get your ass in gear and stop failing by committing to succeed or die. You owe it to yourself AND your future audience. You will keep working to create value for your chosen audience until your experience of the world ends. It’s succeed or die. About 15 years ago, while sitting in my cubicle office, I realized something horrifying. I realized I had fallen into a trap. I was bored and unhappy with most of the day. This was not supposed to be my life. I'd drive 45 minutes to a job that was only 13 miles away from my house. I'd sit in my cubicle office on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles, California, bored. The day was going to be long and just like the last. After about 10 or more hours I'd drive home, it'd take about an hour to get through those 13 miles to get home. L.A. traffic, ya know... I might make it home in time to kiss my young daughters good-night, if traffic wasn't too bad, or they'd be asleep and I didn't even get to see them that day. Then on to the next day... This day would be like all the rest, except my wife and kids would be at Disneyland with my visiting family. My kids were experiencing something they still remember to this day, the first time they went to Disneyland as kids. I remember it too, sitting in my office, since I realized I was living someone else's life. It certainly wasn't my life. When I graduated high school, with the entire world as a possibility, I wasn't hoping that I could spend most of my day, everyday, in a boring job. Missing my kids growing up. Wondering what fun they were up to while I inched towards death being about as fulfilled with life as a rock. I couldn't take it anymore. I decided to refuse to live that fake life. This morning I watched a video about how scientists now have a device that can keep a heart beating perfectly FOREVER! Wa-What? I read about stuff like this everyday. I'm totally a futurist tech junkie. I actually use my personal Facebook feed to see everything I can about biomed, the singularity, transhumanism, AI, robotics, anti-aging, nanotech, biohacking, and more. Because of this guilty pleasure, I got some really crazy looks from a bunch of fellow business owners in the Dan Sullivan Strategic Coaching group I was in. The first task we had in the group was to write down the age we expected to die. Sound morbid? I liked it! After we wrote the age, we all had to say the age out loud one at a time, for all to hear. 78. 84. 87. 152. That last one got a chuckle from the room and the coach stopped everyone and asked me... “Why 152?” I answered, “Because that's about double what the 'normal' death rate is now.” I went on to back my crazy number by talking about a handful of scientific breakthroughs that already exist now. Some of the smartest people in these fields say that a doubling of our life expectancy will be possible in our lifetime. These same scientists and PHD's have a united goal: Live long enough to live forever. BOOM. Science fiction? Maybe not. I choose to believe it anyways. Pick the delusion that works, as Scott Adams says. So what does this have to do with having a freedom business? Great question. Here goes… Choosing to start your freedom business now is more important than ever. We already know that life expectancy is going up, maybe not to 152 (yet), but people are already living longer. This means that you'll have more time to hate that soul-sucking job you have far longer than age 65. This is one of the reasons that I decided to fight the fear of failure and just go for it 13 years ago. I couldn't imagine another 30-50-75+ more years of trudging through traffic to get to a job I hated so some idiot could dictate what I do and how to act for 8-12 hours a day. I wanted freedom the day I started my entrepreneurial journey and I'll fight to gain more freedom and give more value in order to keep the freedom I already have.
