Today on Around the Wood Stove, we are dedicating the entire episode to a look back at Lancaster’s 24 Hour Plays 2012. On November 2nd & 3rd, Wood Stove House, along with 35 writers, directors, actors, musicians, and crew took over Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster’s entire building on West Orange Street for 24 hours. Our goal? To write, rehearse, and then perform six brand new original plays for a triple digit public audience. We made it!!! Jenny Hill is a professional writer, published poet, arts educator, hoop instructor, and performer who recently moved to Lancaster from Northeastern Pennsylvania. I first met Jenny on First Friday in October when she came upon our kids hooping and playing fiddle on the street. Jenny was carrying a handful of her own hoops, and the evening quickly turned into an impromptu hula hoop throwdown at the corner of Orange and Queen in the heart of downtown Lancaster. You can expect to see more hooping in the streets now that Jenny’s in town! I recently caught up with her to learn more about her creative endeavors and why she and her husband chose Lancaster as the next destination in their journey. Songwriter Jake Lewis and screenwriter Shawna Stoltzfoos are a creative couple who recently moved to Lancaster from Gettysburg. I chatted with them about their current creative projects and their decision to make Lancaster home base for their creative careers. Jake plays shows regularly throughout the mid-Atlantic region from New York to Baltimore. He recently released a full length studio album called Location, Location and a self produced EP, We Can Get Out of Here, available for free on Bandcamp. Jake will be playing in Lancaster on Saturday, November 24 at Live From the Cellar with the Unusual Suspects. Shawn's film Spaceman Wilson (trailer) was produced by Tim Scott and is currently making rounds on the independent film circuit. She's also developing a television series called Young Lancaster and is currently looking for Lancaster area creatives who are interested in working on the show. Maggie McKaig is a singer-songwriter from Nevada City, CA. Maggie was recently in Lancaster to facilitate a songwriting workshop at Franklin and Marshall College. Maggie is a prolific and award winning singer-songwriter, guitarist, and accordionist who has explored a wide range of musical genres over the decades, most recently with an  instrumental outfit called Beaucoup Chapeaux. While her home is Nevada City, she has an interesting story with deep ancestral roots in Pennsylvania and Cumberland, MD. Lancaster's First Friday Lancaster’s First Friday is this week on November 2. Each first Friday in downtown Lancaster thousands of friends and neighbors descend on Lancaster City to dine at the local eateries, visit the shops and galleries, enjoy street performers of all kinds, and simply bask in the greatness that is the Lancaster arts scene. Ed Fernandez, Artistic Director from the Ephrata Performing Arts Center (EPAC) and Josh Kirwin, actor and bassist with Darry Miller and the Veil, join us on the program today. Josh plays the lead role, Melchior, in the upcoming EPAC production of Spring Awakening. While this show is now a Broadway musical, it was written in Germany as an avant garde play by Frank Wedekindover 100 years ago. Over the years, the play has been extremely controversial and until it was transformed into a musical in 2006, it had been very rarely produced. The Parliament is an art collective from York, PA with a mission to revitalize and improve the quality of life through the arts in the city of York. In the past couple of years, the group opened a gallery downtown and now rents studio space to local artists and musicians. The Parliament opens a new show each first Friday and has worked with over 150 artists so far. Rita King, Curator for The Parliament is one of my guests on today's episode. This week we're dedicating the show to things that are happening around the wood stove. Steve Carlson and I caught up on recent performing arts events in the area that we found particularly inspiring. Steve talked about the final performance for Camp MFE, a summer music camp held in Lancaster City by Music For Everyone and organized by Michael Jamanis. He also recently wrote a blog post about the experience. I talked about a trip to York a few weeks ago to take in the premiere of a new documentary called A Day in the Sun by Brian Plow about the thriving art scene and arts renaissance taking place in our neighboring city to the west. You can read my full review here. We also chatted about how performing arts groups are dealing with the limited number of dedicated venues in Lancaster by producing performances in found spaces. Tellus 360, an environmentally friendly furniture store that focuses on reclaimed wood, is hosting national acts in their showroom, concerts and theater events have been held at The Candy Factory, a co-working office, and bands and other groups are producing their own shows at The Community Room above Prince St. Cafe. There are also now six house concert series in Lancaster! We explored what this could mean for the area. Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart are a singer-songwriter couple from Nashville, TN who visited Lancaster earlier this month to perform at a Wood Stove House concert to benefit our friends at Bridge of Hope National. Stacey and Mark have been performing together for 20 years and spend over 270 days a year on the road playing in theaters, coffee houses, house concerts, and listening rooms. In the late 1990s they began to carve out their own version of the music business first by releasing all of their records on their own independent record label called Gearle Records, and later by taking over all booking and management operations. They are a self-sustaining DIY operation who consistently navigate the modern folk and listening room movement year after year. Mark DeRose is a Lancaster area singer-songwriter and musician who organizes a yearly concert in his native city of York, PA focused on green initiatives and doing something good for the community. This year, the 3rd Annual Rootenanny, benefits an organization called B.O.P., or Bring on Play. B.O.P. is a division of the city of York that renovates one York City playground each year and hosts a variety of events that encourage kids of all ages to get outside, move around, and have some fun. B.O.P. volunteer Adam Nugent joined Mark for a conversation about the Rootenanny and all of the things that B.O.P. brings to York. Nick Mohler, Program Director at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen joins us for a conversation about the history of the guild, the guild's new retail store and headquarters at 335 N. Queen St. in Lancaster, and some of their upcoming arts and crafts workshops. The guild boasts 1500 members in 33 states and the headquarters and brand new guild store is bringing a wide variety of handmade decorative and functional art to the area.
