1 out of 5 stars It's Giving Me Cavities   March 13, 2010
default_gamer
Americans put too much sugar in everything, up to the point of morbid obesity and overwhelming taste. But seriously, did we really need to put a couple of pounds of sugar into an album? This kind of cheesy, uncreative music is not at all what I'd consider palatable. It's like shoving 10 packets of Dixie Crystals into your mouth and chewing it like cud as overly sweet saliva drips from your mouth. Even worse, it's like shoving 10 packets of stevia in your mouth, which is awfully sticky with a bitter punch of vomit-inducing aftertaste. It's no wonder they put a song about going to the dentist on here! Something has to remind you of making frequent visits every time you're going to listen to this. But enough with the sugar stuff: this just isn't good music. It's hallow. It's drained. It's hardly even reminiscent of good electronica.

In many of the other reviews, you've probably read "The Postal Service" and are confused. Why would mailmen rock out? Well, let me teach you, since you only seem to learn about music from your schoolmates and the radio. The Postal Service is a side project by Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie and Jimmy Tamborello of Dntel and Figurine. Death Cab Foe Cutie makes music with meaning, of emotion, and of fulfillment. Unfortunately, you kiddies probably know about them from that Twilight CD. Well, I'll tell you straight up that that song doesn't even begin to cover the scope of DCFC, albeit it is somewhat good. Check out "We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes," a once-in-a-lifetime effort. I can't say I know much about Jimmy, but I'll tell you that the electronic samples I've heard are a just combination of awesome and more awesome. And when these 2 artists merged together, it was 764-HERO and Modest Mouse all over again. They formed a blissful, 10-track album that stomped all over anything else electronic at the time due to a sensible purity in each well-crafted song.

But what does this generation know about albums? They probably just downloaded that "Fireflies" song and claim that, because of one song, Owl City "dropped it like it's hot" (oh, you silly kids and your phrases). If you're that kind of fan, you fulfill a wonderful little stereotype I'm forming about today's Hannah Montana and Lady Gaga youth, which are two names no one will remember when they read this review in the future. On the other hand, you're still young and ignorant. It's okay that you didn't discover good music yet. It takes some people quite a while to get into indie, some as long as when they enter college. You'll learn one day that buying that Black-Eyed Peas CD at the record store your dad took you to was a waste of money and maybe that Built to Spill album close by had some more listenable tracks. You'll learn one day. As sure as there are Backstreet Boys CDs collecting dust at Goodwill, many of you will learn. Good luck!

4 out of 5 stars well produced, good writing   March 11, 2010

This is definitely pop music. You're not going to get anything too deep with the lyrics and sometimes the lyrics don't really make sense. If you're into "synth" type stuff, as I am, there is some good stuff here. Not exactly Kraftwerk or New Order but it works for what it is. The album was surprisingly good. Pretty polished but not so much that it takes away from its rawness. Honestly, it sounds like something you could do in a nice home or project studio with a talented producer, but I think that is part of why it works. You get the feeling this is just some kid in his bedroom, making music for himself, that happened to have everything take off on him.

2 out of 5 stars same sound   March 9, 2010

do all the song sound the same to anyone else? I listened to the cd and almost every song had the same beat or music. kind of catchy but sounds the same.

5 out of 5 stars Owl City- Ocean Eyes.   March 5, 2010

This is one of the best CDs I have bought so far this year!
Like I expect a lot of other people to do, I bought this album off the back of the single 'Fireflies'. It's a beautiful song and I wanted more! Now sometimes when you buy an album off the back of a single, the rest of the album just doesn't live up to it, but not in this case! The rest of the album is just as beautiful- it's comforting, liberating, mood making stuff that can be the soundtrack to any part of your life! I'd also advise anyone who likes Owl City to listen to The Postal Service because they are quite similar. Great purchase!

1 out of 5 stars Garbage.   March 5, 2010

This album sucks and I swear the fireflies song was written to induce suicide. This has to be one of the worst synthisized, lip sync, fruity pieces of garbage I have had the displeasure of hearing in quite some time. I used fireflies as an example because the rest of the bomb is not worth listening too or mentioning. The video for that song made me think on a song voiced child molester that needed to die.
