Product Description Julia childs story of her start in the cooking profession is intertwined with blogger julie powells 2002 challenge to cook all the recipes in childs first book. Amazon.com Julie & Julia is a film that should be relished with gusto--accompanied by the freshest and best ingredients, pounds of butter, and bottles of the very best wine. It lovingly celebrates the life of one of American food's most influential and beloved figureheads: Julia Child--played here with zest, humor, and a sweet, subtle respect by Meryl Streep, whose performance is spectacular. Julie & Julia is based on the book by Julie Powell, a frustrated New York bureaucrat who wants to be a writer. "But you're not a writer until someone publishes you," she moans. So she gives herself a challenge: to cook her way through Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking in one year, and to blog about it. As Powell (played with chirpy determination by Amy Adams), begins to find her groove as a cook, and her voice as a writer, the project takes on a life of its own--and in the end it does provide the struggling young woman with her life's purpose, to her very pleasant surprise. But mostly, Julie & Julia is a valentine to Child, to Child's amazing love affair with her dashing husband, Paul (Stanley Tucci, as divine as any soufflé in the film), and to her outlook on embracing life, and ordering seconds. Streep throws herself into the Child role with real affection for her character, and while certain of Child's idiosyncrasies--including her warbly voice and unflappable haphazardness in the kitchen--are retained, it's Child's character and vision which form Streep's portrayal, and which make the film so involving and rewarding. Nora Ephron directs with deftness and a light touch, though she seems at times to be encouraging some of Meg Ryan's onscreen tics in Adams (the self-conscious head tilt, for one). But mostly she simply allows Streep to channel Child and her love of food, her husband, and 1950s Paris. And that is a recipe for something truly sublime. --A.T. Hurley

Julie and Julia March 20, 2010 Kathleen Nelson (Los Gatos, Ca) My husband and I loved this DVD. Meryl Streep is an incredible actress and should have received the Oscar for this movie. Her portrayl of Julia Child was so believable! This is a movie that we will watch many times over the next few years.
brilliant story March 19, 2010 A. Rensing (Fairfield, OH) I went into this movie quite sceptical, but it a brilliant intertwining story of the 2 women. I watched Julia Child when I was younger and had no idea how facinating of a women she actully was.
Bon Appetit March 17, 2010 Jaci Cybul (Chicago, Il USA) Loved it! Meryl Streep never dissappoints. She is wonderful as usual! While watching it, I had to keep remembering it was Meryl and not Julia. I never knew much about Julia and this is a real human interest story. Even my husband liked it and he's not a big fan. Most informative and very enjoyable. As for Amy Adams, love her too! She is a very talented actress. It felt like I was cooking right along with her. I think the pairing of Meryl and Amy once again (ie. Doubt) was a brilliant idea. They work together well. A++
Even losers can succeed... March 16, 2010 D. J. Nardi (Washington, DC) Interesting way of presenting the lives of two women, 50 years apart but facing similar problems in life. It was interesting to see the lifestyle of a foreign diplomat during the early 1950s (Julie). Likewise, it was funny to see a bored woman succeeding with her cooking challenge and blogging about it. I wouldn't recommend it for younger audiences because of its slow pace. I also hated the scene where they steam the lobster alive! Overall, a fun and interesting movie.
How did Streep not win the Oscar? For your father's generation. March 13, 2010 P. Stein (Beavercreek, OH) I am of the generation that grew up with Julia Child. Appreciated Streep's stunning performance. Incredible acting. How does she keep doing it? I think the primary appeal of this movie would be to the older generation.
The premise behind the movie seems very gimmicky. Not believable that someone cooked all those recipes in one year. The food cost alone ----. It's understandable that Julia Child's looked on the author with disdain. But ignoring the gimmickry, we are left with a wonderful and heartwarming love story of both Julia and her husband, as well of Julia and her love of cooking. Not the boring TV hostess at all, but quite a remarkable person.
Loved the scenery. For those that have not been to Paris, it looks every bit as it did in the movie. It is a timeless city that did not plunder its architectural past in the name of progress. If you do just one thing in life, do Paris. Bad English, but words that are meant to capture the spirit of the city.
