I met with CacheLogic’s Chief Marketing Officer John Dillon at Digital Hollywood. John talked to me about Cache Logic’s approach to content distribution. The company provides a native peer to peer content distribution network that competes with companies like Akamai and Limelight Networks.

Cachelogic has developed what it calls VelociX, a media delivery platform that combines P2P technology with a global network of content caches built using the vendor’s P2P Management Solution. Content is cached on these servers and that means large media files — such as movies, TV programs, and games — can be downloaded over a broadband connection in minutes instead of hours.

The real benefits, however, start to kick in when the end users’ computers start contributing to the content distribution as well. It increases the capacity dramatically and cuts the costs at the same time.

A number of other companies have tried to provide similar services using a client only approach. CacheLogic’s base network acts like a super P2P network that is available even if local peers are not. That increases availability on the network and helps speed up the last segment download which can be a problem on P2P services based only on distributed clients.

I met Gilles BianRosa, CEO of Azureus, at Digital Hollywood today. Azureus has long been one of the most popular bittorrent applications for sharing and downloading content off the web. The application has been downloaded over 140 million and Azureus users connect with one another from more than 100 countries and 40 languages.

Azureus operates a video aggregation and distribution platform to support the exchange of long-form, High Definition or DVD quality videos, as well as niche, licensed digital content from leading media companies. The company has recently announced content partnerships with Showtime Networks, BBC Worldwide, Bennett Media Worldwide, G4, A&E Networks (including A&E, History, and Biography channels), National Geographic, and Starz Media.

The new platform called Vuze is supported by peer-sharing technology, providing users the ability to browse, share, search and discover multimedia entertainment in a high-resolution format.

Gilles was kind enough to sit down and tell about Azureus and their new direction called Vuze (Vuze.com). I hope you enjoy this interview with Gilles.

MediaDefender, an anti-piracy group which uses tactics like flooding peer to peer networks with fake files, suffered an embarrassing security breach in which numerous emails were taken and even some phone calls recorded.

The hackers posted the emails on peer to peer networks and reportedly include confidential threads related to asset protection on specific titles. The emails also expose some personal information like social security numbers, emails, and phone numbers.

The most damaging revelations might be regarding the company’s planned MiiVii site that would allow people to upload and download copyright movies, TV shows and music. Apparently, the service would also secretly track people’s activities and report it back to MediaDefender.

In addition to the phone call and emails, blogs are reporting that a huge MySQL database dump from a MediaDefender server was leaked on BitTorrent as well. The database shows tracking and decoy file information for the Gnutella network which is used by P2P clients such as LimeWire.

This is a big set back to MediaDefender’s image with it’s clients. It should serve as a reminder to everyone that much of what we think of as secure is really unsecure.
