Finding your unique voice

by Alex Nesbitt

David Lawrence, host of the David Lawrence Show and Online Tonight, presented at the Podcast Expo about finding your unique voice.

David encourages all podcasters find their natural voice, to use silence as a tool and to know that people are drawn to quiet speakers, so stop shouting. He suggests using bullet points, not scripts.
David describes Keith and the Girl as a great example of podcasters using their natural voice. David also recommends the Never Not Funny podcast as another great natural voice podcast.

He recommends that you speak to the audience as if they were an individual, use “you” not “everyone”.

He recommends painting yourself into your audiences corner, know them and speck to them. Voice work should also be friction free.

Things that help your voice - water, clear juice, hot chocolate.
Things that hurt your voice - alcohol, soda, coffee, non-herbal teas.

He suggests that you should have your mic placed so that you don’t talk right into the mic, but talk across it to avoid pops. Relax and don’t hunch forward when you speak.
