Podcast Transcription Services
Erick Schonfeld reports at B2Day about CastingWords.com, a start-up focused on building a business model using podcast transcripts.
One of the founders, Nathan McFarland, explains what the company is hoping to do: We’re a super early stage startup – the idea is to sell search ads against the keywords in the transcriptions, which we generate using Amazon’s Mechanical Turk ( http://mturk.com) and some whizzy software. But we need capital to pay all those MTurk workers, so in the next few weeks we’ll be opening a store. It will allow Podcasters to purchase transcriptions of their shows. We’ll do the transcriptions and give them a full transcription – not just chunks pulled back by the search engine if it happens to index their show. Of course they automatically get listed in the engine, so this arrangement should drive traffic to them, get them transcripts, and get us the cash needed to keep on transcribing…
I checked the site and it’s not working right now, but it seems like an idea worth watching. For those that are interested in transcription services escriptionist seems to be up and running. If you find more services, add it in a comment.

Hi, we are a full service transcription company that provides Podcastnig transcripts. We’ve done it for several large companies. We provide direct upload via ftp and a fully functional client area where you can download and retrieve your transcripts.
We provide flat rate quotes directly on-line. There are different prices for each level of complexity, but the rates are fixed.
We use a domestic work force. It’s not that we’re against outsourcing to India or other third worlds companys, it’s just that the quality just isn’t there. (Cultural context is a large part of accurate transcription.) Based on my experince, the rates being quoted for CastingWords definitely indicate either India or an even cheaper country. (42 c/minute = $25.2 per hour of audio.) 1 hour of audio takes between 4 and 6 hours to transcribe depending on complexity. There aren’t too many domestic transcribers who will work for between $4.20 and $6.30 per hour.
