Grapevine Dispatches is a FREE podcast produced by The Civil War Gazette
found at www.civilwargazette.com. During the Civil War soldiers heard of
news pertaining to the war from the Grapevine Dispatch or the Grapevine
Telegraph. Oftentimes the news the soldier heard through the Grapevine
Dispatch was clandestine, only partially true, and would even border on
the sensational, if not outright fictional. But this informal means of
gathering news and information was nonetheless important to the men as
they waited to hear of the latest battle casualty numbers or troop
movements. Soldiers used the name - Grapevine Dispatches - because
they said that the downed telegraph lines looked like tangled grapevines.
