During the time of hurricane Katrina, Memorial Medical Center in New Orleans was out of power, running water and temperature rose to 100 degrees. Reports of inadequate triage processes for evacuation and lack or leadership quickly followed. Eventually, forty-five bodies were found in the devastated health center during recovery efforts. Physician Anna Pou together with two other nurses allegedly "hastened" the patients' deaths by injecting them with lethal doses of morphine. Pou defended herself by saying she merely helped the patients through their pain and holds that stand up until now. A recent court decision required the institution to pay an amount of $25 million to the individuals who took shelter at that hospital and sustained injuries and died. This decision was based upon the lack of preparedness of the hospital for such disasters and its failure to operate in a highly emergent situation.
