Summary: 7 Day Growth Barley Fodder at Quartz Ridge Ranch Today we start with some follow up on the Craig’s List ad from yesterday’s show claiming you can grow enough fodder per large animal (say a horse or a cow) for only about 70 cents per head per day. I was skeptical about the cost of the system and its claimed output. We have had knowledgeable feedback on both sides of the issue and it seems that you really can get the output but the system in the ad is high in cost and not really necessary. Some folks at Quartz Ridge Ranch built their own fodder system from salvaged parts and a few odds and ends, it works beautifully. The key seems to be the animals are feeding not just on the greenery but the entire root mass, this is how one square can provide 15-20 lbs of high quality feed with a 80% nutrient uptake efficiency vs. about 20% on dry grass.
