Episode-2587- Food and Farm Forestry for Global Security

The Survival Podcast show

Summary: Today’s show was actually requested by none other than Geoff Lawton.  I made only one modification changing it from Food Forestry to Food and Farm Forestry, simply to be more clear.  When we think of food forests we think 90% about fruits and nuts, then about 10% about under story including the shrub and herbaceous layers.  The reality though is forests can provide among many other things, food, fiber, fodder, construction materials, medicine and more. Additionally we need to reconsider what we consider a “forest”.  Most would figure a forest must be in some way a square, rectangle, trapezoid, triangle, etc.  In some way it is large spread out acreage.  Yet how many trees are an in Savannah mimic grazing system?  For instance is not what Mark Sheppard has done on his farm, forestry?  Look at the image below and judge for yourself, sure seems like a forest to me, but it is not what we generally think of when we hear the word forest is it? To truly understand the concept of security and how it pertains to forestry we need to broaden out concept what a forest is, as well as what security really is.  We have been conditioned to believe security comes form the state, it does not.  One could make a very good case that the state has done more harm than any other single institution when it comes to individual and global security.  Chiefly by convincing humanity that individual and global security are separate issues.  They most certainly are not and as you shall hear in today’s show when security begins with your own stewardship in your own backyard, then and only then, can we begin to move toward a world of security for all. We can do this neither protected nor educated by the state, but rather both protected and educated by the original protector of all life on the planet, the forest itself.
