Episode-2435- The Design Science of Permaculture – Part Five

The Survival Podcast show

Summary: Six weeks ago I realized that we have not really dived deep into the topic of Permaculture I began this current series on Permaculture. So far we have completed part one, part two, part three and part four of this series. If you have not listened to them you may want to before proceeding in the series. You can find the entire series here. Today we are going deep into how to actually set up and design a small permaculture property, or a zone one for a larger property.  While I am going to come at this process from the stand point of a typical suburban yard, it absolutely will apply directly to zone one on larger properties as well.  This should make it broadly appealing to the majority of the audience. Join Me Today to Discuss… Lets review again the significance of agriculture vs. horticulture Going back to TSPs very early roots, this is really about moving from home to homestead Some advantages to small properties and zone one design You can mulch and irrigate everything You can build the most productive soil in the world It forces you to think about every decision Your system ends up easy to maintain and you don’t get in over your head The truth – You actually already know how to do this – you just need to give yourself permission to act Systems and Techniques for Urban Design Aquaponics Wicking Beds Micro Earth Works Water Catchment Garden Ponds Columnar Apples or Spindle Apples Trellises Succession and layer planting Composting Wildlife habitat creation Animal Systems – quail, chickens, rabbits, pigeons, fish, worms Permaculture Principles for Small Space Design Do the least work for the highest return Everything should serve multiple functions The problem is the solution Diversity is only as powerful as the interconnections it creates Slow, spread and soak water and hence nutrient Humans are native to earths ecological systems Water is life, but so is soil – if soil isn’t lost it is being built Final Thoughts   This continues a multi part series on Permaculture, next time we will discuss, harvesting, using, and storing surplus.
