Summary: PRAYER – EPISODE 4
IN THIS EPISODE…

01:10 We begin with an apology for being away so long. We are happy that we are together again.

01:45 – Where do we start? Prayer is something that we’ve all struggled with at some point. John talks about prayer being:

An act of worship
Something we’ve been given as an opportunity to come before the God of the universe.

02:48 – Some items of note and struggles with prayer are brought up such as:

Does your mind wander when you pray?
How do you find time to pray?

03:49 – A discussion begins about prayer is coming before the throne, and the reverant holy attitude we should have.

We love all the elders at our church, and seriously, we could listen to Kevin speak all day long.
John J. takes about the solitary places he has to pray, and the choices aren’t vast, or holy for that matter. However, even in those places, we live Coram Deo
John J. likens his train of thought to Amtrak.
John C. provides a PSA – Don’t close your eyes when you pray in the car.
While you can pray about what you want, James 4 shows us that your motive are important.

07:51 Segment 2 begins

Are there differences in prayer between the Old Testament and New Testament?

John C. believe there is. In the Old Testament, you find God speaking audibly to people and the prophets. That doesn’t exist so much in the New Testament.
James points out that our relationship with God is different. The Israelites could only go so far with God. In Christ, the barrier that existed for them is gone because of what Christ did for us. In Exodus, only Moses had that kind of access to God.
We have a backstage pass.

11:00 – We begin a wonderful discussion on addressing God as Father.

It was scandalous to call God Father in the Jewish culture.
In the New Testament, the Pharisses call Abraham their father, not God.
While we need to fear and revere the Lord, we have an intimate relationship with God expressed by the fact that we call him Father.

13:55 – The big question is asked, why do we need to pray to an all knowing God?

John C. first says who is prayer for? You, God, or both?
James enlightens us that Matthew 6:7-8, Christ points out that God knows what we need before we ask.
God works through means. He uses prayer as one of those means.
Prayer demonstrates our dependence on God.
Prayer is used for our sanctification.
Prayer is the starting point of conforming us to God, but we need to move towards the goal.

17:75 – What is the result? Deeper fellowship with God.

John C. plumbs the depths of deeper fellowship between an awesome God and a lowly man.
Ephesians 3:14. That is the result.

21:26 Segment 3 the “Nuts and Bolts” Segment begins

Tripartide is not really a word. John J. admits to being an immature believer and John and James readily agree. Then we move on to the important things. Modeling prayer.
Disciples should model prayer to each other. Listen to the elders of the church pray. James visited another church, and they use everything as a teaching moment and the congregants pray like the elders on Sunday.
James talks about using Scripture to model prayer.
