Episode 20: “Rogue One” - A Hanukkah Story

Brew Theology Podcast show

Summary:
In Episode 20 of the Brew Theology Podcast, Ryan and friends - Meghan, Liz, Dan & Shoshana - brew up an Hanukkah episode just in time. Yup. The original Rogue One Star Wars Rebels were Jewish. Let's finish the holiday season spinning the dreidel, lighting the menorah & digging into the liberation movement of Hanukkah then and NOW... Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday that celebrates the miracle of the oil. It is an 8-day celebration that commemorates a Jewish victory over tyranny and begins on the lunar month Kislev 25 (Dec. 24 sunset–Jan.1 sunset ‘16/ ‘17). The Hanukkah story is found in 1 Maccabees (apocrypha), and is the story of how Judas Maccabee and his band of freedom fighters overthrew the Seleucid forces under the rule of Antiochus “Epiphanes” during the 2nd Century BCE. Hanukkah is not a biblical festival recorded in Hebrew Scriptures as it began after the last books of the Scriptures were completed. However, it is recognized in the Christian New Testament (John 10), as we see Jesus going to the temple on this holiday. (It is unclear if he ate potato latkes and doughnuts after his visit that day.).
Enjoy the episode.
