Summary: Are you sitting down?  If not, then go ahead….have a seat.  We’ve got news.  Sometimes…..how do we say this……ultrasounding the patient may not be the right thing to do.  Now, we’ve yet to find that particular situation, but the Canadian guys tell us this is the case.  In fact, there’s a whole list of problems and pitfalls that can be associated with ultrasound.  We’ve kind of known this for a while, but honestly we can’t bring ourselves to say it out loud.  So we’ve got these guys to do it for us.  I mean, they’re Canadian.  You can’t hate a Canadian no matter what they say or how funny they say it. Seriously, we think this is pretty important.  We spend TONS of time showing you all how to do this and telling you why you should be doing ultrasound.  We at least need to discuss a little bit during this “Back to the Basics” series about when not to perform an ultrasound and what mistakes you can make, especially starting out.
