The Barque of Peter has survived storms -- even fearful scandals brought on by the evil conduct of Popes -- without sinking. Two successors of Pope Formosus declared all his ordinations and episcopal consecrations invalid, leaving thousands of Catholics in doubt as to the validity of the sacraments they had received over the years; yet even these crises, precipitated by the appalling behavior of Popes, did not destroy the Church. When the Pope says or does something disconcerting, we must remain calm; stay close to Our Lady; remember that the Fourth Commandment applies to the Holy Father; and not allow our faith to be destroyed. A Pope may make our lives in the Church very difficult, but no Pope can change anything that is essential to faith.
