Rising Industry Insiders: What Those New To The Publishing Industry Think About Its Future

bookbliss show

Summary: This panel of graduate students in the NYU-SCPS M.S. Publishing: Digital and Print Media Program, who are working in fairly entry-level positions in the industry, speak out about their vision for the future of the publishing industry. Topics focus on life inside the publishing office from the point of view of those new to the industry. How is the industry doing from the point of view of newcomers? How do the student’s skills and cultural experiences compare with those of employees more entrenched in the industry? How do the students see themselves shaking up the mold? What’s wrong (and maybe right!) about the social media strategies planned by those forty something executives? How would the students do it better? If they were running the company, what are the top five things the students would do to change things? The panel featured April Rim, Sales Assistant, Library Journal / School Library Journal; Christian Scarlett, intern, Lippincott Massie McQuilkin Literary Agents and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt; Teresa Ferraiolo, executive assistant to the President & Publisher, Macmillan Children’s Group; and Thea James, Digital Sales & Promotions Manager, Workman Publishing. Peter Balis, Director, Digital Business Development, John Wiley and Sons, moderated the event.
