What is the best way to learn the Japanese language? Keeping in mind that the Japanese language has two alphabets and Kanji, complicated grammar, local dialects, "keigo" and growing lexicon of new words, you will be investing a lot of time in order to speak, read and write Japanese. Being able to read Kanji has many advantages, but does require a lot of study and may slow down your progress with spoken Japanese. I have found that many of the best Japanese speaking foreigners I have met in Japan can't read Kanji. Most students skip learning Kanji altogether simply because it takes so long to memorize Kanji. The best way to learn Japanese is to have clear goals of what you want to achieve, do regular focused study, make Japanese friends and learn as much as you can with Japanese people.

Kana and Kanji: Kana and Kanji: the Japanese writing system is probably the main reason most people quit learning Japanese after a few months. Getting to a level where you can start reading can take years depending on how much free time you have. Learning Katakana and Hiragana doesn't take too long if you commit to regular study. Colloqiual Japanese: The only way to really learn spoken (colloquial) Japanese is to come to Japan and study. I am sorry to say that you can't just "pick up the Japanese language" over a few years. Thousands of English teachers come to Japan every year. They stay for a few years and go back home not being able to speak the language at all. You really need to surround yourself with Japanese and put in some good study time. I recommend you make lots of Japanese friends, go to live and Japan and definately get a copy of Kanji Supremacy.
