Jenny Levine In this thoughtful conversation, Online Information Conference Key Speaker, Jenny explores the way libraries should be more open to experimentation, despite the concerns of spending other people’s money to deliver a better service to those people.   Much can be learnt from the wider web about simplicity and planning for a changing environment.  

Jenny also throws out the challenge to those attending the conference for specific questions or topics they would like her to cover in her presentation to get in touch.

Panlibus Podcast—OCLC Talk with Talis about the new Record Use Policy

I am joined in this Talking with Talis conversation by two well known OCLC names – Vice President WorldCat and Metadata Services, Karen Calhoun and Senior Programme Officer, Roy Tennant.

There has been much coverage on Panlibus and several other blogs, about the way the recently updated Record Use Policy was announced, the elements of the policy, and its ramifications for the wider library community.

Apart from the need to update and replace the current 21 year old Guidelines, the professed objectives of the new policy is to clarify and increase the possibilities for the sharing and transfer of OCLC records.  From the noise in the blogosphere, it is clear that many do not share that understanding.

Karen published an extensive post on Metalogue providing some background to the policy and its announcement.  I was delighted to share this extensive conversation with Karen and Roy to explore in more depth the intention, details and ramifications of this new policy, due to be implemented in February 2009.

Semantic Gang Podcast—October 2008: The Semantic Web Gang discusses the launch of Twine

In October’s edition of the Semantic Web Gang, a full complement of regulars is joined by Radar Networks‘ CEO Nova Spivack and Chief Architect Jim Wissner in a discussion of Twine.

Unveiled at the Web 2.0 Summit in November 2007 and released in beta earlier this year, version 1.0 of Twine was opened to the world toward the end of October, and widely reported (see my coverage on ZDNet here, for example.)

In this discussion we touch upon the purpose of Twine, review the first few days of live operation, and then focus upon the team’s plans for the future.

When originally announced, Twine was closely associated with the Semantic Web, although the company’s current marketing is less quick to make that link. In conversation we discover more about priorities for the 1.0 release and dig into some of the ways in which semantic technologies will play an increasingly important role moving forward.

Panlibus Podcast—The economics of scarcity – JP Rangaswami talks ahead of Online Information 2008

JP is passionate about the way we have to change our thinking and actions around the practices and and controls placed on software and information.  If we don’t get things right “we will repeatedly be wasting money digging out stuff that should have been made available much more cheaply because costs of transmission and reproduction are going down”

This is a great insight in to someone who proposes that Librarians should be evolving to become Livebrarians.  Understanding where JP is coming from will add great weight to the opinions he expresses in the Q&A Panel on the first day of the conference.

As well as being Managing Director of Design at BT, JP is closely involved with the School of Everything and publishes the thought provoking and entertaining Confused of Calcutta blog.

Panlibus Podcast—Mashed Libraries UK – A conversation with Owen Stephens

owen stephens The first Mashed Libraries UK 2008 event is taking place at Birkbeck College in London on 27th November.

This Talking with Talis conversation is with Owen Stephens, Assistant Director: e-Strategy and Information Resources at Imperial College.  Owen is the driving force behind the organisation of the event and has been aided by the sponsorship of UKOLN.

Owen tells us how the idea for the day came to him, what is hopes are for the day and what attendees can expect.

To help with the organisation, Owen has set up a Ning Site Mashed Library where you can sign up for the event and get involved in the discussion about the format of the day.

This is a great idea and I am looking forward to attending with a couple of other Talisians.  We are also going to be making available a couple of Talis Platform Stores for use at the event.  I’ll be posting some info about this on the Ning in the near future.

Panlibus Podcast—Stephen Arnold – A conversation with the closing keynote speaker for Online Information 2008

Arnold’s career has lead him to be a prolific writer, speaker, and expert on web technologies and their application both inside the commercial enterprise and across the Internet.  He is best known for his work on search and his insights in to the Google phenomenon.

He is presenting the keynote in the closing session of the Online Information Conference 2008 which is being held at Olympia in London from 2nd – 4th December and will have a wide range of speakers of broad interest to all information professionals from all sectors – libraries, academia, government, and commerce.

Stephen talks about his career so far and the themes for his presentation, explaining how the technologies that we have seen emerging over the last few years are ready for use inside the enterprise as well as maturing into delivering services across the web.  He also explores how the componentised nature of these technologies and the applications they power, enables them to be moulded to satisfy the needs of their users.

Library Gang Podcast—Library 2.0 Gang 10/08: Financial Crisis or an opportunity?

Unless you have been living under a stone for the last few months, the turmoil in the world financial markets can not have escaped your notice, but how will this, and the inevitable recession that we are heading in towards, influence libraries and their suppliers?

Is the library world insulated from it?  Does it mean that open source become more popular because it is perceived to be cheaper, or less because there will be less funding for those involved?  Does it mean that pressure to purchase add-on components as against full systems will increase?  What pressures will there be on the vendors both traditional and open source?  Does this mean that libraries will become more or less significant in their communities?  Is this an opportunity or a crisis or both?

Joining gang members Marshall Breeding and Carl Grant to discuss this, our guest this month is Talis CEO and avid Bloomberg watcher, Dave Errington.

The conclusion seems to be that it is definitely a crisis for the world economies, but this first recession in an online world could be an opportunity for libraries if they are willing to grasp it.  Take a listen and see if you agree.

Panlibus Podcast—Conference Chairman Adrian Dale looks forward to Online Information 2008

online-information-logo-2008 adrian-dale As Conference Chairman, there is no better person than Adrian Dale to kick off this short series of Talking with Talis podcasts produced in association with Online Information Conference 2008.

The three day conference held at Olympia in London from 2nd – 4th December will have a wide range of speakers of broad interest to all information professionals from all sectors – libraries, academia, government, and commerce.

Adrian describes how this year’s programme builds on last year’s conference and how the conference committee were impressed with the large number of case studies that were submitted for practical implementations of the subjects talked about a year earlier.   With those case study presentations supporting a quality list of informative, inspirational, and entertaining keynote speakers, the 2008 conference looks like being a high spot.

Semantic Gang Podcast—September 2008: The Semantic Web Gang discusses investment opportunities in semantic technology

In September’s edition of the Semantic Web Gang, regular members are joined by three guests to discuss the investment potential of the Semantic Web and semantic technologies.

With continuing investment in (and acquisition of) companies for whom semantic technologies are a key part of their proposition, we explore the extent to which investors are interested in ’semantic technology’ per se, and look at recent investments from Union Square Ventures to illustrate the wider discussion.
