The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) and PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC) announced that Internet advertising revenues reached almost $5.9 billion for the third quarter of 2008, representing an 11 percent increase over the same period in 2007. The Q4 results will give us a good feel for next year.

Bazaarvoice launched BrandVoice, "the first User-Generated Channel Marketing and Advertising program whereby manufacturers can catapult product sales and brand equity through the syndication of user generated content to retailers." Walmart "leaked" its Black Friday ads to select Black Friday shopping sites. Now they want them taken down, and they are using lawyers to do it. Here's the legal notice. Not sure why Walmart wants to make it hard to find their ads for this huge shopping day. In any case, the letter from counsel may have the opposite effect. What's Walmart really trying to do here?!

Adobe’s Flash Player is on 98 percent of all desktop computers, but it is still struggling to make the jump to mobile phones. The company is demonstrating Flash Player 10 running on a Windows Mobile phone at Adobe Max today. This will make it a lot easier to develop cool and useful mobile app's.

With newspapers slowly dieing, Rupert Murdoch said they may still have a bright future if newspapers can shed reporters/editors who he said have forfeited the trust and loyalty of their readers. Murdoch criticized the media reaction after bloggers debunked a "60 Minutes" report by former CBS anchor, Dan Rather, that President Bush had evaded service during his days in the National Guard.

There's an interesting situation unfolding on the Daily Kos with AIG. Essentially, AIG has offered to respond to Daily Kos readers' top questions about the bailout. We'll see if they step up to it. My sense is this will generate a lot more conversation online about AIG to which they will not respond. But at least they are trying something different and it does not involve a "holding statement." Thanks to Andrew Foote for giving me a heads up on this.

Thanks to Google and the Rome Reborn Project, everyone in the world, from Rome itself to Calcutta, can now travel through time and discover Ancient Rome as it was 1,688 years ago when it was ruled by Emperor Constantine. This kind of project puts 3-d web back on my radar. Awesome. Watch the video even if you have not downloaded Google Earth.

Ron Rosenbaum and Jeff Jarvis are going at it. Rosenbaum questions Jarvis' motives for continually challenging journalism and the media. I think Ron''s off base. I've been reading Jarvis for three years now. I even had my little run in with him during the "Dell Hell" period and when our "Chris, the intern" wrongly took an anonymous swing at him. But through all of this I have come to believe that Jarvis is a real expert on the media industry and a passionate change agent. That is, he really wants newspapers to rethink, restructure and thrive, and I believe that is his primary motivation. Call me crazy.

One-half of US blog readers surveyed thought blogs were useful for getting information about purchases, according Jupiter. More than one-half of respondents who had trusted blogs for purchase decisions in the past said the information they found on blogs helped determine when they decided to make a purchase.

This article made me feel smarter — I've been trying to figure out how to get any kind of content to our TVs, but it is much easier said than done today. This article suggests an XBox 360, Wii or Playstation might be part of the solution.

Despite its audience, Facebook's advertising revenue is up and down. So they are placing a big bet on a new ad format called "engagement ads" that further blurs the line between marketing and social networking. The concept is good, but it should not be blurry to the person endorsing the product or service — that's the problem I see with the test ads. People were recommending products/services to their friends without knowing they were recommending them. For instance, my students tell me I recommend Betty Crocker with great frequency.

I think groups are a good idea on LinkedIn — and could be powerful and popular. But they are not being closely moderated which means anyone can join just about any group and the discussions are full of spam. LinkedIn needs to get this area back under control.
