Appearing nearby

We are fortunate to live in the Hartford area, half way between New York and Boston, to be able to catch some great acts live. Whether it be right here in Hartford or New Haven or a two hour train ride to NYC, there is lots of jazz to be heard live. Most of tonight's program are from artists who have made the journey through Connecticut to delight the small but enthusiastic jazz fans at dinner clubs, bars and small venues nearby.

Short Show

Another eclectic mix with no real theme. This show is the remaining tracks of a broadcast from October 4 of this year. Since I only had 4 tracks, I added a bonus recording of the great Charles McPherson whom we saw this weekend performing at the Jazz Standard with Tom Harrell. I just tacked it on to the end of the radio broadcast so it is not announced, but this track shows McPherson's strong bebop style in the tradition of Charlie Parker.

Claire's Mix

We start out this show with Claire's excellent selections of jazz and fusion tracks, followed by music inspired from some recent live performances we attended in Hartford and NYC. We caught Mike Stern at one of our favorite NYC venues, 55 Bar. This is a tiny, intimate venue, and we were seated at the bar, literally two feet from this great guitarist, as you can see from the video I captured that evening.

Badal Roy came to Hartford as part of the International Jazz Festival. In addition to his regular quartet, he brought his fellow bandmates from Miles Davis's band Dave Liebman (sax), and Michael Henderson (bass). I shot this video of the ensemble playing from Miles's In A Silent Way. Take note of the gorgeous Bamboo Flute playing by Steve Gorn.

Pork Pie Hat Jazz Series

We open tonight's show featuring the Pork Pie Hat Jazz series. This series of five jazz shows is sponsored by the Hartford Office of Cultural Affairs, and produced by friend of this show, Andres Chaparro. Insight performed last week, and it was a great scene to see the community turn out to support live jazz in downtown Hartford. We finish the show with a birthday tribute to John Coltrane, who would have been 82 last week.

Varela Music

Joining us live from WHUS is Frank and Deva Varela, jazz guitarist and vocalist in the Hartford area. Frank is one of the best guitarists in the area. We will feature some tunes from the Mystery Feet CD's, and Frank and Deva's So Real. There is also some amazing footage of Frank playing guitar and base simultaneously on YouTube. If you are looking for professional instruction on guitar or other instrument there is no better place than Varela Music in Vernon, CT.

Eclectic mix part 2

This is the second hour of my Eclectic Mix. Starting with harmonica master Toots Thielmans. Thanks to Ken Blanchard of Jazz Note SDP for turning me on to that one. Next, dig this sixteen minute track from newcomer Empirical. I am introduced to a brand new CD from Kenny Garrett. It is quite a different sound from one of my favorite alto players. We end the show with some great grooves from a new CD by Philly's Organissimo and multi-reed player James Carter.

Tenor sax player Ernie Watts, pianist Aaron Parks, fusion group Garaj Mahal are all represented with new CD's.
