Revealing Alaska

The Sitka PodShow is now available on Television throughout Alaska on Revealing Alaska!
Across the vast State of Alaska there exists thousands of exciting stories – many which are uniquely available in rural and urban Alaska. Hundreds of Alaska youth in middle and high schools in all size communities are technology “natives” with exceptional communication skills using the latest in video production equipment.

The REVEALING ALASKA television show is designed to provide expanded communications throughout the state and the world via TV broadcast and the Internet. REVEALING ALASKA provides a unique opportunity for youth and adults to develop and distribute important messages to those wishing to communicate with a combination of individual and small groups, all across Alaska and beyond.

Alaskans interested in developing short video stories such as elder interviews, community activities, cultural events, athletic contests, entertainment, rural entrepreneurship, arts and crafts, subsistence, educational opportunities, health, inspirational and news-related topics may be part of REVEALING ALASKA.

As a result of extensive out migration by both youth and adults from smaller communities, the experience of closeness in the villages tends to evaporate when persons relocate in the larger cities. Those new from the villagers often experience a disconnect with family and friends. REVEALING ALASKA is committed to addressing this separation by utilizing an urban-rural “cultural club” as part of the family friendly television station.

REVEALING ALASKA is a weekly news and public affairs program broadcast statewide and distributed via the Internet worldwide. This unique program is a great way to involve our Alaska schools, students, parents, businesses and organizations using the latest in technology.

How to Participate?

All Alaskans are encouraged to participate in the REVEALING ALASKA project. Normally, the program producers choose their topics and/or events, write the scripts, record the topics, and edit their programs (including beginning title, program content and closing credits). The program segments are usually at least 2 minutes and are limited to 7 minutes. Often these shorter video productions are referred to as Vidcasts, Podshows, WebTV and other familiar titles. To submit video productions for submission to REVEALING ALASKA, please send edited shows directly to KACN-TV in Anchorage on miniDV or DVD – either in standard or high definition. If you need assistance in video production procedures, you can download Windows Movie Maker 2.1 or other video editing software at no cost from the Internet. Additional editing assistance can be secured from YouTube, Google Video, Yahoo Video, Blip TV and other video hosting sites.

These short videos may be incorporated as part of the station’s regular news program and/or be provided to the REVEALING ALASKA editor who will review submitted videos for incorporation in a weekly REVEALING ALASKA program. The finalized program will be composed of several shorter videos for broadcasts on each of the three North Star Television Network stations including KACN-TV, on all GCI cable systems in Alaska, the DishNet satellite system and small cable systems. REVEALING ALASKA may also be available via Video on Demand to any part of the world.

As a partner of KACN-TV, Alaska Video Institute coordinates the Citizen Video Journalist (community correspondent) programs that provides programs for REVEALING ALASKA. Participants, under staff supervision and who learn how to produce and to provide programming, will receive an official VIDEO PRODUCER certificate.

Alaska Steller Sea Lions

April 24,2008
Sun,Sun,Sun, the Sun has been shining in it's fullest glory. It's springtime in Alaska! The other day I grabbed by HD Camera and drove out the road along the beach. It wasn't long before I found some marine mammal action. A very large group of Alaska Steller Sea Lions. To my astonishment there were nearly 60 Sea Lions passing before me. Like a pack of large dogs, the Seal Lions snorted, rolled, and chased each other in the moving tides. The Sea Lions were apparently after the schools of Pacific Herring that had just entered Sitka Sound to spawn. Beyond the seal lions were Humpback Whales diving and breaching as they feed upon the schools of unwary herring. Bald Eagles chased each above me, as Ravens awaited in the trees behind me for their turn at natures bounty. It was a good day to be out filming. It was a good day just to be out. I hope you enjoy the short video, and please feel free to share this website with your friends. Happy filming!
