  • Spain: Scientists warn Pyrenees will melt by 2050 (06 Sep 2008 00:00:01 CST)  Australian Broadcasting Corporation: Leading global warming scientists say the 21 remaining glaciers in the Pyrenees mountains in Europe will melt by the year 2050. The researchers say high mountains are particularly sensitive to climate change and there has been a steady increase in temperature since 1890. Their calculations show that since 1990, a rapid thawing has caused the largest glaciers to shrink by 50 to 60 per cent and the smallest ones have completely disappeared. The glaciers in Spain were ...
  • Papua New Guinea: 'Toxic time bomb' awaits Ok Tedi (05 Sep 2008 00:00:01 CST)  Australian Broadcasting Corporation: More attention should be given to a potential environmental disaster in Papua New Guinea near one of the world's largest copper mines, warn some scientists. Melbourne-based river scientist Dr Ian Campbell is concerned about large areas downstream from Papua New Guinea's Ok Tedi mine being affected by acid mine drainage. • Peristaltic Technology Delivers Trouble-free Lime Slurry Metering at Three Stage WTW (Thu, 16 Jul 2008 11:57:41 GMT)  Peristaltic pumps supplied by Watson-Marlow Bredel are delivering trouble-free, 24-hour operation of lime slurry metering at the Blackmoorfoot WTW near Huddersfield. Serving over 400,000 people, the WTW at Blackmoorfoot was the first full-size, three-stage water treatment works to be built by Yorkshire Water. Pumping around 30Ml of water a day, the three-stage process involves flotation, first-stage filtration and subsequent manganese and chlorine removal in three distinct stages. This has been successful in treating upland Pennine waters and, as a result, water quality throughout the area has improved. A critical aspect of the water treatment process at Blackmoorfoot is the addition of lime slurry, to control the pH of the water. Water enters the works with a pH of around 6 and is then dosed with ferric sulphate and brought to a pH of 3.5. Lime is then added to aid flocculation at the first stage of filtration - bringing the water to pH 4.2 before more lime is dosed, which brings the level to pH 6.8. At the second stage of filtration before the water leaves the site, further alkaline lime slurry is metered to the supply in order to maintain the required pH level. The lime raises the pH to around 9.2, which assists in the removal of naturally occurring manganese. According to the Joe Kelly, process engineer at the Blackmoorfoot Works, the peristaltic technology offers distinct advantages over other types of pump. “We've been using the Watson-Marlow Bredel pumps on site for at least seven years and they have truly delivered trouble free operation. This cannot be said of all of the peristaltic pumps we have installed on other sites. We have found that pumps from other well known suppliers are often prone to failure - particularly the inverters and motors. This results in unnecessary downtime and high maintenance costs.” The process control engineers at Blackmoorfoot WTW use six separate Watson-Marlow Bredel SPX 40 hose pumps to handle the lime dosing. Three of the pumps run 24hr a day and the remaining three pumps are used as duty stand-by units. With a maximum flow 6000l/h and discharge pressure 16bar, the Watson-Marlow Bredel SPX 40 is part of the company's family of SPX direct-coupled hose pumps. Designed to provide all of the performance, reliability and ease-of-maintenance benefits of bareshaft (long-coupled) designs with the compact advantages of close-coupled pumps, the SPX range is available in sizes ranging from 10mm to 100mm. Unlike close-coupling, Watson-Marlow Bredel's patented direct-coupled design permits the drive to be removed and replaced without the need to dismantle the pumphead.
  • Improving Plant Profitability (Sat, 11 Jul 2008 10:01:27 GMT)  Optimizing pump life cycle performance provides a path to help reduce plant-operating cost and has the potential to achieve 30% to 70% improvements in energy and maintenance cost, while improving both pump and process reliability. Leveraging more than 150 years in process machinery design, manufacture, and operation, ITT's monitoring and control solutions have one goal - improving plant profitability. ITT has products and services that target important issues of process uptime, maintenance, and energy costs. ITT's ProSmart™ systems provide continuous, predictive monitoring for all rotating equipment at an exceptionally low price. With ProSmart, the focus of a predictive maintenance program (PdM) can change from data collection to analysis and improvement activities. In addition, by continuously monitoring plant equipment, ProSmart can proactively warn of on-setting machinery problems. PumpSmart® pump control systems provide real-time control and protection for centrifugal pumps while also providing valuable process insight. By protecting against unplanned pump failure due to process upsets, PumpSmart can keep plant process running longer and eliminate unplanned repair activities. By right-sizing pumps, PumpSmart can help reduce not only energy consumption, but also wear and tear on a process system. Reducing Pump Energy Consumption is High Priority for ITT Energy consumption is a huge concern in every marketplace served by pumps. Because pumps are especially intertwined with water use, lowering energy costs has become a guiding priority for ITT engineers. ITT's new generation of vertical turbine pumps for the residential and commercial water markets vividly illustrates this point. The pump's 2% boost in base efficiency translates into a very significant 10% reduction in lifecycle costs for the customer. The N-pump, designed for wastewater applications, reflects similar synergies, using 20% to 30% less energy and lowering life-long maintenance costs. As energy conservation measures become critical to customer's operations, ITT's smart pumping systems such as the Hydrovar™ frequency inverter control system provide microprocessor control of any centrifugal pump, reducing energy exposure. The comprehensive lifecycle assessment associated with ITT's focus on reducing pump energy exposure minimizes every aspect of its environmental impact, both internally and at the customer site.
  • ITT's Growing Presence in the Asia-Pacific Region (Mon, 06 Jul 2008 14:45:28 GMT)  ITT is a fast growing presence in the Asia-Pacific region. In China, ITT's water and wastewater pump systems figure prominently in ongoing infrastructure initiatives, such as the Three Gorges Dam and the South-North water diversion project as well as in unique applications like powering the kayak racecourse for the Beijing Olympic games. The most promising markets for ITT Fluid Technology in China focus on water supply and treatment for infrastructure projects, commercial buildings, and industrial applications like mining. ITT has just opened two world-class manufacturing plants, producing in Shenyang (producing submersible drainage and sewage pumps) and in Nanjing (producing residential ,commercial, and industrial products). Both new facilities incorporate “green” practices, such as water treatment technologies that get as close as possible to total water re-use and zero wastewater discharge. A new research and development center, also at Nanjing, will be the hub of aggressive efforts to tailor existing and future products to the country's exploding value market. This approach reflects ITT's broadened emphasis on localization. In India, the government has projected roughly $300 billion worth of infrastructure improvements over the next five to seven years. To help position ITT's product portfolio for this building boom, a new technology center has been opened in Vadodara, in the state of Gujarat. As ITT's first major facility in India, the technology center will assist in developing deep engineering competencies in several core water and other fluid transport technology areas and accelerate ITT's market penetration in south Asia by aligning or localizing the product portfolio. This past fall, ITT's residential and commercial water business opened its first regional office in New Delhi, India. ITT is also building a manufacturing and assembly plant in the Gujarat region.
