News stories for Monday 01 December

Running battles between soldiers and police in Harare
Clashes broke out between soldiers and riot police in Harare Monday after a group of about 200 uniformed soldiers ran amok. Eyewitnesses say soldiers went berserk after they couldn’t withdraw their monthly salaries from the banks. The Deputy Mayor of Harare, Emmanuel Chiroto, said he saw the soldiers singing war songs and throwing stones and other missiles on to moving cars.

No water in Harare as cholera crisis deepens
International health agencies are revising their figures for Zimbabwe’s cholera epidemic and, shockingly, predict at least 300,000 infected by year end. No one knows the exact number of dead but Health Minister David Parirenyatwa is quoted as saying there have been 11,071 cases reported since the epidemic began seven weeks ago, with 425 deaths.

Mugabe regime to defy SADC ruling on land
Mugabe’s regime is set to defy a regional SADC ruling that 78 white farmers can keep their farms because government’s land grab discriminated against them and did not pay fair compensation. On Monday the Herald quoted State Security and Lands Minister Didymus Mutasa saying the tribunal is day-dreaming and ZANU PF would not reverse the land reform exercise.

Bank cash withdrawals increased again
Zimbabwe’s central bank will yet again raise daily cash withdrawal limits this week, amid mounting tension and threats of serious protest action by civil society. As of Thursday the daily limit of Z$500 000 will be increased to Z$100 million a week – which has been averaged at Z$14 million a day. It is still unclear how the banks will determine the public’s daily withdrawal limits, but there are doubts this increase will make any difference on the ground.
Body of MDC activist found
A body of an MDC activist abducted several weeks ago was found in a mortuary in Mashonaland West last week, with multiple stab wounds. SW Radio Africa received this information on Monday from a very reliable source, but we are not revealing the identity at the request of the family who fear retribution.
MDC and ZANU PF talks expected to resume next week
There are reports that talks to establish the elusive power-sharing government might be entering their final stage, when negotiators from ZANU PF and the two MDC’s meet again early next week.

Dear Family and Friends,
A few days ago I had no choice but to travel past the farm my husband and I legally bought in 1990 but which was grabbed from us by a mob of government supporters 10 years later in 2000. In the eight years since then I've never had any official written communication from the government of Zimbabwe about the farm - not even a letter.... Read more

December 1st is World AIDS Day, and while most Zimbabweans are struggling with crippling inflation, cholera, and a collapsed health system, people who are infected and affected by HIV and AIDS are finding it even harder to survive. Moses talks about how it’s a daily battle to make it from one day to the next, and if people had access to life saving Antiretroviral drugs they would at least have some hope; Zororo say people infected with the virus are dying in huge numbers from lack of treatment and food, and Ngwenya describes how HIV positive people are more vulnerable to cholera.

Lance Guma discusses the top stories in the week with political commentator Bekithemba Mhlanga and broadcast journalist Brilliant Pongo. Stories under the microscope include the reported signing of a draft constitutional amendment between the negotiating teams from ZANU PF and the MDC. What does this mean if the leaders from the parties still have to approve the draft? The panel also looks at the ramifications of a regional SADC ruling allowing 78 dispossessed white farmers back on their land.
In Letter from America Dr. Stan Mukasa argues that conditions for mass action exist in Zimbabwe. TEXT

Violet’s guest on the programme Hot Seat this week is former US President Jimmy Carter, speaking about the events surrounding the humanitarian mission to Zimbabwe by the group of Elders. Carter describes SADC as ineffective and very timid in dealing with an ‘illegitimate’ government that is imposing it’s will on the people of Zimbabwe. Click here to listen
