It sucks to write this because I love your show and look forward to it every day. I got turned onto podcasts by the start of your show on Sirius 148. I got into podcasting full force and now, as you can see below, I have 3 podcasts at the moment.
I understand in some ways your position on the Goyfire podcast but now I think the line has been crossed. Podcast Alley has on their website a podcast called Pedologues a website dedicated to "child love". It is basically a round table discussion on having sex with children.
As a parent I have struggled with this for a couple of days now. Freedom of speech is an important thing and a slippery slope. Once you restrict one area what stops censorship from running rampant and constricting all our voices. I don't know the answer. Even if I wasn't a parent I feel that I would still feel the same way.
I am under the belief that you can't be against something you know nothing about, so I had to listen to a couple of their shows to know what I was against. On their shows and site they say they are not doing and/or advocating anything illegal. Are they fucking serious?
Man I don't know. Like I said this sucks. I'd much rather be writing you an email saying great show, listen to this, check this out, but........
Since you went public and got your audience to weigh in on the Goyfire one, please do the same with this. I think you might find out that the result will be different.
What do you think? Is this good for podcasting? Does it even matter?
A big part of me says that any censorship is wrong. It's what I've believed my entire life.
I don't know anymore..................
Thanks for taking the time to read this. I feel I should make this public and will post on all podcasting forums.
I've thought about this overnight and talked with some friends whose opinons I trust. Parents and non-parents.
I know this is not going to be the popular view but I have come to the conclusion that for myself this is a "don't like it, don't listen to it" argument.
I mean if we say this is deplorable and illegal (which it is) and shouldn't be given audience then podcasts discussing the glorification of the use of drugs, file sharing and the like would fall under the same category. The illegal part that is.
I am not talking in an emotional way but in a theoretical one. My wife disagrees with me and feels that justifying them is just as bad.
Oh well, we'll agree to disagree. As will a lot of us on this board.
I respect everyone who is going to disagree with this and you should know that a big part of me agrees with you.In reply to guest
Just because someone makes a podcast doesn't mean a directory has to list it.
For a brief few hours a hate podcast slipped onto Digital Podcast and was removed when a user brought it to our attention.
Virtually every directory has something like the following language for submitting podcasts - "We may reject, delete, or edit submissions that violate Digital Podcast's policies or that we otherwise believe, in our sole discretion, should not be included in the directory."
I don't want hate mongers, racists, child abusers, illegal podcasts or anything like that in this directory. I hope any user who finds anything like this will notify us immediately.
I hope all directory operators will take a stance to ban such podcasts from their directoriesIn reply to guest
Curry said they were going to pull these aweful podcasts from podcast alley, but they were not going to have a policy against them at ipodder.
Seems like curry is trying to have it both ways - there is absolutely no reason why they can't have a policy against these kinds of podcasts, even if they maintain all the nodes.
As a protest, everybody should pull their links to ipodder off their websites. In reply to guest
as was asked by someone else, who the hell links to ipodder? :?
anyways, i just want to commend alex here for having the intestinal fortitude, and downright common sense to run his directory with a set of morals attached!
if only people would use common sense instead of trying to think whether or not a pedophile podcast should remain in a private directory (or public for that matter), the world would be a better place.....
PCA links have been pulled from my website, and i only link to and discuss the pickle, digital podcast and podcasting news directories in my show and blog.....
even though PCA removed the shows, it took them too long to "think about it" and decide if these shows should be present in their directory....
me and my 1000+ listeners have packed up and left PCA for good!In reply to guest
Well, I use iPodder. I know that iTunes is the current favorite, but I can't even get them to list my show, so I don't even think of using their podcatcher.

I think iPodder Lemon - the podcatcher is different from iPodder the directory. The directory is part of podshow - I think iPodder lemon is open source.
Does anybody know if iPodder lemon is part of podshow? In reply to guest

Let me start this by saying that if you want to ban a podcast for their so-called "hate" speech. That's your thing and no one can argue whether or not you have the right. AS long as you are providing a service, then you should be able to choose who you provide it to for whatever reasons you want.
That said, I got a problem or two with this.
Firstly, who decides what is "hate?" Hate is a relative term and cannot be easily defined. There's no way to be objective about it so how can you fairly regulate it? You cannot. Might as well say that only beautiful people can podcast.
It really is as simple as, "Don't listen to it if you don't like it."
Secondly, I find it amazing that people spend so much time worrying about what their children "might" be exposed to. Does anyone here but me subscribe to the school of thought that promotes good parenting by being involved with your children? Maybe instead of sitting little Johnny down at the computer and sneaking off to watch the next episode of "Desperate Housewives" we should take the time to teach our children what they should be listening to on the internet. Besides, anyone out there that thinks a stupid podcast has more influence over their own children than they do just plain shouldn't have kids. Sheesh! They are YOUR kids.
Stop worrying so much about policing the internet and focus on policing your own family for once.In reply to guest
while you have some good points......
teh site admin is the one who decides what is hate..... at least on his site...
and while i agree with you 100 percent about parents taking more responsibility for their children.... it's not about that for me. my kids are 2 years and 1 month old.....
i, personally do not want to have anything associated with those certain podcasters.....
if i say that i do not agree with a pedophile podcast, i would rather not get into a graphic discussion with one of them about how "child love" with a "consenting prepubescent" is acceptable... it is sickening and boils my blood that these people are not already in jail.....
by engaging in conversation with these people, i am enciting more publicity for them, and therefore anyone who downloads their show to verify it isn't a joke, makes it look like they have more subscribers. with those boot in numbers, it makes them think they are winning people over to their "lifestyle" and therefore encourages them.......
it makes me an enabler.... and if you know anything about psychology, that is a bad thing!
therefore due to my possibly drawn out view, i want nothing more than to distance myself as much as possible.....
it may not sound like a simple reasoning to you, but for me, it works in my mind....In reply to guest
On one of my other websites, I wrote the message board software so that people could talk about Dividend Reinvestment Programs (if you want to get rich over the next 30-40 years then you will want to visit http://DRiPInvesting.org).
In over 40,000 messages I have only had to toss one person. The decision was mine and I had no problems doing it because I felt that he went over the line. I am absolutely for free speech and have no interest in stopping anyone from offering their opinions on any subject, but if they want to use my microphone then I see that as something that I need to consider. With about 500 people visiting the site on a daily basis, I feel that I have an obligation to those people to provide for them what I promised in the first place (plus, enough of them toss money into the tip jar to completely offset all costs).
I feel that this is the same case. Personally, I have not heard these podcasts, and can only say that they would be allowed in my directory unless they were promoting something illegal (like violence against the people they hate). However, this is not my board and I know that Alex has a similar obligation to his constituents with his own set of rules, and I am perfectly comfortable with that. Adam Curry has the same decision to make for his constituents, and I feel that he is being "adult" with his decision, although some people do not agree. And finally, of course, if one's disagreement with the policies or actions are to the point where refusal to use a service or software is made (like my decision not to use iTunes), then nobody can have a problem with that.

The fact that a pack of people can run to someone\'s door and start pounding and scream hate!!!! hate!!!! and thereby attempt to and oftentimes successfully intimidate that person into silencing politically incorrect speech is absolutely disgusting. You `anti-hate` people should be hauled off to a communist gulag, like the one you\'re trying to make America into.
And to the Japanese poster. Who the hell do you think you are chiming in on \'hate\' in a Nazi Asian country that\'s 99.4% Japanese. What a hypocrite! In reply to guest
Hmmm, looks like someone has some "issues" to work out. Chill, dude.

you need to realize that i'm not japanese, nor would it matter if i was.....
for you to refer to the Japanese culture (the most peaceful modern society with one of the lowest crime rates possible) as being "nazi" just proves to those here that you are about as ignorant as a rock when it comes to world politics and culture.....
travel the world and see more than your comfortable suburbia or farmland has to offer....
now please go ahead an post a link or two about past WWII Japanese aggression, or about one of the rare stories of discrimination in Japan (unlike those in the US) just like your goyfire friend tried to do.....
