Jerry has been hunting with, training and breeding English Setters and Pointers for decades. He currently, along with his wife Betsy, owns and operates Northwoods Bird Dogs in Sandstone Minnesota. On today's show Jerry and I discuss his upland hunting history as well as how he got into field trialing, training and breeding English Setters and Pointers. We talk about hunting methods and techniuqes as well as some of Jerry's training methods. Tune in to this episode to learn all about grouse dogs! For more about Northwoods Bird Dogs, check out their website and excelllent blog at: northwoodsbirddogs.com From the website:  Northwoods Bird Dogs was founded in 2002 by husband-and-wife team Jerry Kolter and Betsy Danielson. They are adjacent to 2,000 acres of private land and are surrounded by thousands of acres of public land. A healthy mix of habitat holds populations of ruffed grouse and migrating woodcock in the woods while the fields are home to coveys of sharp-tailed grouse. The kennel itself has only 20 runs and Jerry and Betsy like it that way. They purposely limit both the litters they breed and the number of dogs they train. Individual care and attention are primary concerns for them. Together Jerry and Betsy move south for several weeks during the winter. They bring their own dogs and a select group of client dogs for specific training on quail.   01:11:00Project Upland Podcastnogrouse, ruffed grouse, hunting, upland, upland huntingJerry Kolter joins the show to talk about his kennel of English Setters and Pointers as well as what makes a grouse dog.f26c4a2d-4cf8-4ef0-9f7a-2f9cf0dad973#27: Hunting scaled quail in west Texas with Ryan O'Shaughnessyhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2018/05/07/27-hunting-scaled-quail-in-west-texas-with-ryan-oshaughnessyOutdoorhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2018/05/07/27-hunting-scaled-quail-in-west-texas-with-ryan-oshaughnessy/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2018/05/07/27-hunting-scaled-quail-in-west-texas-with-ryan-oshaughnessyMon, 07 May 2018 00:00:00 GMT#27: Hunting scaled quail in west Texas with Ryan O'ShaughnessyOn this edition the Project Upland Podcast we talk about hunting scaled quail in west Texas with Ryan O'Shaughnessy of West Texas Quail Outfitters. Jack is a friend of mine that shares a passion for hunting ruffed grouse and woodcock in the northwoods of the Great Lakes states. He also loves bird dogs, especially German Shorthaired Pointers! Aside from simply sharing upland hunting stories, the reason we had Jack join us for this episode was to set the stage for an upcoming episode with a gunsmith that is currently working on one of his guns. Jack shares the story of how he acquired the gun and why it will ultimately earn a special place in his gun safe. We also talk about Jack's upland hunting beginnings and adventures over the years which include ruffed grouse and woodcock in the Great Lakes states, Chukar in Idaho, Quail in California and more. Eventually we wrap up the episode with a little conversation about custom gunsmithing and gun fitting. 00:59:00Project Upland Podcastnogrouse, woodcock, german shorthair, shotgun, double gunJack Stephan joins the show to talk about upland hunting adventures, favorite dogs, vintage double guns and custom gun work and fitting.Episode #15 - Fred Bohm- Sage & Brakerhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2018/01/19/episode-15--fred-bohm-sage-brakerOutdoorhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2018/01/19/episode-15--fred-bohm-sage-braker/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2018/01/19/episode-15--fred-bohm-sage-brakerFri, 19 Jan 2018 02:00:00 GMTEpisode #15 - Fred Bohm- Sage & BrakerOn this week's episode of the Project Upland Podcast Fred Bohm, owner and operator of Sage and Braker Mercantile joins the show to talk about building his company as well as upland hunting the western United States.  For more on Sage And Braker check out the company website at sageandbraker.com Sage & Braker Mission: When you’re born from the hunt, you’re raised to protect it. Prior to working at the TRCP, Fosburgh spent 15 years at Trout Unlimited, playing a critical role in the organization’s evolution into a conservation powerhouse. Additionally, Fosburgh served as fisheries’ director for the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, was chief environment and energy staff person for Sen. Tom Daschle and was a wildlife specialist for the National Audubon Society. On today's show, our conversation focuses on the number one priority of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership which is, "to guarantee all Americans quality places to hunt and fish." We cover current federal policy issues, sage grouse conservation, the 2018 farm bill and much more. TRCP Mission: We help create federal policy and funding solutions by uniting our partners and amplifying the voices of American sportsmen and women in service of Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation legacy. More from TRCP: In 1912, Roosevelt said, “There can be no greater issue than that of conservation in this country.” While in the political arena, he succeeded in making conservation a top-tier national issue. T.R. had the foresight to address these issues still so significant to sportsmen today, understanding that if we want to safeguard critical habitat, productive hunting grounds, and favorite fishing holes for future generations, we must plan carefully today. Their persistant focus on customer service and the end-user along with their ability to adapt with a changing marketplace has solidified their platform in the dog training and hunting supply industry.  Steve is an avid quail hunter and spends a lot of time hunting his string of bird dogs in Texas. Steve gave us a bit of a recap on his hunting season so far as well as a look ahead at the prime of the Texas quail season in December, January and February. With the holidays right around the corner Steve and I chatted about current gear offerings on the market, as well as the state of the hunting dog gear industry. Furthermore, on the brink of a new year, Steve touched on a few manufacturers plans for the coming year and hinted at some possibilties in the future of hunting dog gear.  Steve also answered some listener questions we took via facebook about specific gear items and/or solutions to problems with current equipment including a burning question of many grouse hunters than involves GPS collars and beepers. Fritz recently published an article on ProjectUpland.com, which was the focal point of our conversation, titled "The Art Of Ruffed Grouse Hunting With Flushing Dogs".  Fritz is an active Member of the Ruffed Grouse Society, and has been hunting over flushing dogs for grouse since 1999 with fantastic success. He owns four Labrador Retrievers and an American Cocker Spaniel. We talk about all the usual including, birds, dogs, habitat and technique. We also talk about the importance of conservation and paying it forward as well as the incredible access to public land we are both so fortunate to hunt. Enjoy the show! For more on grouse hunting with flushing dogs, here's a preview of the article: "The pace of your hunt, generally speaking, is going to increase with flushers rather than with pointers. It’s important, therefore, to stay in shape and know how to walk through the woods. Feel your way around cover. Look for lanes within the woods that are slightly more open and allow you to move more easily. Pay attention to the direction birds are heading when you flush them, scribbling out mental notes for next time. When it all comes together, you can enjoy some really fine days afield. Your dog will bust the heavy cover, pushing birds your way. Meanwhile, the bird will be more concerned with avoiding the dog rather than the gunner walking into a point. Consider a flushing dog for your next grouse dog. You might be surprised at the productivity and enjoyment they can bring." 01:03:00Project Upland Podcastnogrouse, shotgun, woodcock, outdoor, adventureFritz Heller joins the show to talk about his recent article "The Art Of Ruffed Grouse Hunting With Flushing Dogs"Episode #10: Modern Wildhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2017/11/30/episode-10-modern-wildOutdoorhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2017/11/30/episode-10-modern-wild/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2017/11/30/episode-10-modern-wildThu, 30 Nov 2017 02:00:00 GMTEpisode #10: Modern WildOn this week's episode of the Project Upland Podcast, I was joined by Aaron and Adam Regier, two of the three brothers that started and operate the upland hunting lifestyle brand known as Modern Wild. Earlier this week, Project Upland released its latest film, "Timber Rocket" which not only featured the boys from Modern Wild, but was also a collaboration between Modern wild and Project Upland. As it's still hunting season here in the midwest, Aaron and Adam filled us in on their latest trips into the grouse woods and about their overall upland hunting season. We talked about the Project Upland film, their beginnings as upland hunters, the state of Modern wild and much more.  Aaron, Adam and Abe Regier have a passion for upland hunting as well as sharing their experiences with others. Similar to what we try to do at Project Upland, the boys of Modern Wild attempt to, succesfully I might add, capture and document their experiences in the outdoors in a way that excites and motivates others to do the same. They have a deep respect for the timeless traditions and history of the outdoor sports yet they are unafraid to introduce techonology and modern devices where applicable. In this sense they blend tradition with technology beautifully and they do it all for the right reasons, to spread awareness and instill motivation and excitement in other upland hunters. If you haven't seen the "Timber Rocket" film yet, you'll want to check that out here. Also, you can find out more about Modern Wild and what they have to offer by visiting their website here. Bob provides us a crash course aka chukar hunting 101 which is fitting as his profession is teaching. We talked at length about his experiences chukar hunting from the very beginnings to the present which ultimately translates into 17 plus years pursuing chukar across the wild landscape they inhabit. Additionally Bob manages a blog at chukarculture.com where he shares his passion through writing, photography and video. From the blog: The chukar (Alectoris chukar) is a non-native species of partridge introduced to North America back in the 1930s. Its natural range is from Israel up through India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Despite its fairly obscure existence in American culture, possibly due to the fact that pursuing this bird is in direct opposition to the increasing and defining laziness of American citizens (in general; is anyone really going to argue with me on this point?), the chukar inspires passion among those who like to hunt the bird and even serves as a sports mascot for a couple institutions in the intermountain west and the namesake for a candy maker.  01:23:00Project Upland Podcastnochukar, outdoors, hunting, upland, upland huntingBob McMichael, Idaho resident, chukar hunting enthusiast and owner of culturechukar.com joins the show to talk all things chukar hunting.Episode #8: Scott Johnsonhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2017/11/17/episode-8-scott-johnsonOutdoorhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2017/11/17/episode-8-scott-johnson/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2017/11/17/episode-8-scott-johnsonFri, 17 Nov 2017 01:00:00 GMTEpisode #8: Scott JohnsonOn this week's episode of the Project Upland Podcast, Scott Johnson joins the show to talk about living in a van and upland bird hunting his was across the country!! Scott Johnson is an upland bird hunter from Duluth, Minnesota. This year, Scott decided that he and Watson would take their favorite pasttime to the next level. Naturally, Scott left his job, bought a van, gutted the van, customized the van, and began laying plans for the ultimate 2017 upland hunting road trip. Scott and Watson's journey began in September and they are well underway now. I caught up with Scott just before he pointed the "Bird Van" south and left the northwoods of Minnesota.  You can follow their journey online by visiting the blog Scott set up: www.scottandwatson.wordpress.com Here's an excerpt from the blog and more from Scott about his epic 2017 upland bird hunting adventure: "Oh Hi there, I see you you’ve found your way to my blog! I’ll try and keep everyone up to date on Watson and I’s travels here, as this is sure to be one heck of a journey! If you don’t know what I’m referring too, I’m days away from setting out on a 6 month bird hunting trip across the US with my super cool bird dog Watson. We’ll be starting in Montana for almost 2 weeks chasing sharp tailed grouse, then it’s back to north east Minnesota for the Ruffed Grouse opener. We’ll be in Minnesota somewhere until about mid November, soaking up every minute of Ruffed Grouse hunting and waterfowling that we can. From there it’s an open ended adventure, we’ve got some ideas as to how it will go, but the BirdVan is prepared to go wherever it needs to! Ann joins the show to talk specifically about late season ruffed grouse hunting. We cover all things from birds, to habitat, conditions, logging, trapping, bird dogs and much much more. Enjoy the show! About Northwind Enterprises: Since the summer of 2002 Ann has been successfully growing Northwind Enterprises, LLC, located in the Northwoods of Wisconsin. From mapping grouse habitat, to conducting outdoor grouse & woodcock clinics and GPS clinics, to guiding hunters on grouse & woodcock hunts in northern Wisconsin, to conducting workshops/seminars on how to locate and strategically hunt grouse & woodcock and producing a DVD package of the same title, Ann’s business is all about grouse and woodcock hunting. In 2015, Ann designed and produced, for all game hunters, a unique online tool for them better prepare for their hunts and to conduct more enjoyable hunts.  The tool is called the Scout-N-Hunt Digital Map Viewer and it combines all her separate state-wide habitat map data into digital files that can be viewed online using the Northwind Grouse Habitat Map Viewer. The map viewer contains extensive information about the types, sizes, and ages of identified habitat, hydrology, roads and trails, topography, and numerous call-outs and images that assist and educate the hunter as he/she prepares for and conducts his/her hunt. Ann’s vision from the beginning has been to grow Northwind Enterprises, LLC based on her extensive knowledge of forestry, GIS, various mapping software programs, interpretation of aerial photography and satellite imagery, and experiences in being a hunter all her life, into a business that can provide the hunting enthusiast with the information, education, and services that will make his/her hunting experiences as enjoyable and productive as possible. 01:28:00Project Upland Podcastnoruffed grouse, upland hunting, upland, shotgun, grouseAnn Jandernoa of Northwind Enterprises joins the show to talk about late season ruffed grouse hunting!Episode #6: Tyler Websterhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2017/11/03/episode-6-tyler-websterOutdoorhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2017/11/03/episode-6-tyler-webster/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2017/11/03/episode-6-tyler-websterFri, 03 Nov 2017 03:00:00 GMTEpisode #6: Tyler WebsterOn this week's episode of the show Tyler Webster, upland hunter and host of the Birds, Booze and Buds podcast joins us to talk about upland hunting North Dakota as well as hosting his own podcast. Tyler and I discuss some of his recent hunting trips, the first snowfall, how his season has been and what he's looking forward to yet this season.  Tyler hunts behind english setters and shares a rather incredible story of how he acquired his first setter and what transpired on their first hunt together. Tyler's love of hunting, storytelling and his friend Ron Boehme of the Hunting Dog Podcast ultimately influenced him to start his own podcast. Formerly known as the Western Wingshooter podcast it's now known as the Birds, Booze, and Buds podcast. Tyler shares with us why he started the podcast and what he plans to do on some future episodes. I asked Tyler about his experience in the this field season and how his approach changes as the season transitions from early to mid to late season. Tyler is also very open about his willingness to help out other upland hunters whether they are seeking general info or more specifically about wingshooting North Dakota. Tyler claims he's full of "useless information" but at the end of the day he has plenty to share and he's happy to do it. Garrett Mikrut is an upland hunter through and through, perhaps second only to being a family man. He lives and breathes upland hunting year round and pursues upland birds with a passion and a deep respect for the traditions of the sport. I met Garrett while in college in Duluth, MN. A common interest in our pursuits at the time, be they a degree in finance, women or upland birds, eventually brought us together! All kidding aside, Garrett and I share a love for hunting traditions and many fond memories in the northwoods of Minnesota. Over the years since college, our passion for upland hunting has risen to the forefront and results in most of our fall adventures.  Garrett recently returned from an upland bird hunting trip to Montana. This was Garrett's second upland hunting trip to the great state of Montana and he returned home with plenty of memories and recollections of another succesful trip. On this week's show Garrett and I talk about how the Montana trip is structured and how the guys that go on it work together to pull it all off. We discuss land access, hunting methods and of course birds, which include sharptail grouse (sharpies), pheasants and hungarian partridge (huns). I also talked with Garrett about the importance of having "dog-power" on an extended out-of-state trip such as this one. Furthermore, Garrett and I talk about our love of double guns, specifically the American-made A.H. Fox. Garrett introduced me to these guns after he was introduced to them by a fellow upland hunter. To close our conversation we discuss our annual grouse camp which will be occurring in WI this weekend. Jared goes into detail regarding the upcoming 2018 farm bill. He explains how the bill can effect habitat, wildlife, farmers and end users of the landscape as well as why it's important it should be important to upland hunters.  Additionally, with the 2017 pheasant season underway or just around the corner for most upland hunters, Jared goes state by state providing a detailed forecast with respect to what hunters can expect this season. We explore how this digital mapping platform can be put into use and immediately improve the effectiveness of your scouting and hunting methods. An avid hunter, Matt provides a weatlh of experience utilizing onX maps from its early stages up until the lastest release. Matt has a bag full of tricks when it comes to using onX Maps from saving and storing maps to utilizing the offline mode when you leave the grid in pursuit of your favorite wild birds. Output is only as good as the input which is why I specifically asked Matt about their data collection methods and how they ensure that users of onX maps have the most up to date and accurate information available. The offline mode is of great interest and value to me which is why Matt and I had a particular lenghty discussion surrounding this topic. With a bit of planning and preparation its possible to quite easily download the areas you plan to hunt or scout prior to your trip. When you leave cellular coverage with a downloaded map, it's like you never even left. The GPS receiver on our phones will contine to work even without cell coverage and the downloaded basemap will ensure you have the ability to navigate effectively and efficiently. We also touch on the airplane mode hack that allows you to save a ton of battery life while still maintaining an accurate postion on your base map. onX Hunt is truly developed by outdoorsman for outdoorsman and that shines through in my conversation with Matt. I hope you enjoy episode three of the podcast and I encourage you to check out onX Hunt if you haven't already. 01:09:00Project Upland PodcastnoonX maps,onX Hunt, ruffed grouse, woodcock, pheasantMatt Seidel Product Manager at onX Hunt joins the show.df09f66e-4652-4d6b-91ef-4205e977df3eEpisode #2: Camp Thunderbird - Brandon Smithhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2017/09/27/episode-2-camp-thunderbird--brandon-smithOutdoorhttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2017/09/27/episode-2-camp-thunderbird--brandon-smith/#commentshttp://www.blogtalkradio.com/projectupland/2017/09/27/episode-2-camp-thunderbird--brandon-smithWed, 27 Sep 2017 22:00:00 GMTEpisode #2: Camp Thunderbird - Brandon SmithOn this week's episode of the Project Upland Podcast, host Nick Larson is joined by Brandon Smith of Wisconsin. Brandon Smith is not only an upland bird hunter but a skilled craftsman and woodworker as well. On this episode We talk about the most recently released Project Upland film - Camp Thunderbird. We talk about upland birds, shotguns and bird dogs. We also touch on some of Brandon's dog training methods and experiences along with how he's developed into the upland bird hunter he is today. For more information on the Camp Thunderbird film, check out the description below: Brandon Smith and Laine Jewel are not your cookie cutter bird hunters. In fact, the journey to becoming bird hunters came in different ways than most. Brandon got a German Shorthaired Pointer and decided since it was a bird dog, that he would take it bird hunting. Fast forward some years later, and Brandon and Laine take it upon themselves to restore a 100 year old trappers cabin in Wisconsin grouse country. The rundown cabin over time would become the grouse camp- Camp Thunderbird. Their journey is more than just a grouse camp in the woods. It is the growth of a relationship, a change in lifestyle, learning a new passion for bird hunting, and finding meaning in the grouse woods. Brandon prides himself on the way his dog has evolved in the woods, his pursuit of the King of the Birds, and his fascination with the American Woodcock. Laine shares her pursuit for the Woodcock or doods (as they call them) 01:19:00Project Upland Podcastnogrouse, woodcock, upland, upland hunting, bird dogBrandon Smith joins the show to talk about the most recent Project Upland film - Camp ThunderbirdEpisode #1: A.J.
