For the next 15 years, Diane worked as a Nursing Instructor in Northeast Ohio. Her results were impressive with an NCLEX pass rate for her graduating students of 97% throughout her teaching career. Her impact as a teacher was recognized when, during her fifth year of teaching, she received the Ohio Organization of Practical Nurse Educators' award for Distinguished Practical Nurse Educator of 1996. Diane's success as an educator was due to her enthusiasm for integrating computer technology into her teaching methodology which led to the creation of FreeNurseTutor, launched in 2006. Freenursetutor.com is a unique and completely free website that lets educators and students use a collection of self-paced and learning activities with a focus on interactivity and individualized learning. FreeNurseTutor is now used as an educational supplement by healthcare instructors and students at hundreds of schools. In 2007, Diane followed the trends in healthcare technology and transitioned to a career as an Electronic Health Records trainer. Diane has developed curriculum and instructional materials and trained healthcare personnel during large scale EHR system implementations at major hospital systems. As an EHR trainer, and through continued contact with healthcare educators, it became clear to Diane that most career tech and nursing schools simply do not have a way to prepare their students for the new world of electronic records. She enthusiastically embraced this as a personal challenge and used her experience in education and electronic health records to create an academic EHR system: EHR Tutor. EHR Tutor is designed to immediately deliver the "missing piece" of electronic records to any school's program. With these eleven sponsoring systems as anchors, the initiative will enroll at least 2,000 hospitals in 50 states and the District of Columbia over the next three years to implement sustainable operations, and will measure the impact on improved patient, worker and community health and reduced costs. They were both passionate about nursing, had a knack for writing and were driven to inspire others to embrace lifelong learning. They later discovered they had something else in common—something they were not talking about. They had both suffered the ill effects of incivility in the healthcare workplace.  Why weren’t they talking about it? Because no one talks about it.  It’s healthcare’s dirty little secret. No one wants to admit that a shameful culture of incivility infects most healthcare workplaces. Both Linda and Stacey found out the hard way that working in an atmosphere that breeds incivility leaves healthcare workers feeling exhausted, hopeless and dissatisfied . . . but that’s not the worst part.  Incivility in the healthcare workplace also leads to medical errors, poor patient satisfaction, higher employee turnover and higher healthcare costs for consumers. Linda H. Leekley BS, RN began her nursing career in the oncology department at Duke University Medical Center. After experience in acute care, home health, clinical education and healthcare writing, she founded the healthcare publishing company, In the Know, in 1998. Linda believes that civility and lifelong learning are the keys to both personal and professional success. She lives in Durham, North Carolina--the “City of Medicine.” Stacey L. Turnure, RN came into nursing as a second career. It was her mother’s diagnosis and eventual death from cancer that inspired the career change. She has worked in oncology, neurology, medical-surgical and pediatrics.  Now, a nurse educator, healthcare education writer and double-time mom to twin boys, Stacey looks forward to inspiring others to follow their dreams, use their voices and make positive changes where change is so desperately needed. 01:30:00RN FM RadionoEmbracing Civility, health care, health care reform, nursing, patient careWhen two North Carolina nurses met, they knew they had several things in common. In his own words: “I realized there is a great need for nurses to find their true path, either within their careers, or if desired, in pursuing an alternate calling. I came to realize I could better serve those I had cared for by caring for those that serve them (my fellow nurses). Helping nurses avoid or recover from burn-out and rediscover their passion in nursing could only serve to enhance their effectiveness in providing care to those that need them, both at the bedside and at home. "My mission is to help those other nurses who, like me, have discovered a burning desire to move on, in a different direction, be that a different field in nursing, or a different field altogether. “In either case to find their path that leads to: Realizing the boundless possibilities that are achievable, self empowerment, and joy.
