At the end of the lecture I reported that, since the responses I received so far have been positive for meeting up in smaller groups, there will be no lecture in Disque starting Wednesday. Students who email me review topics will be directed to a location and time slot for meetings. It looks like the first requests are all for Newman projections.

The lectures for the rest of the term will be uploaded shortly, as well as all previous lectures in Flash format.

The first test covers Chaps 1-4.

Lecture 005: Molecular Orbitals and Polarity

We finished up molecular orbitals with the sp hybrid in acetylene and looked at predicting molecular shape from hybridization. We examined the rigidity of double bonds leading to geometrical isomers (in contrast to constitutional isomers). Polar and non polar molecules were analysed based on the summation of their polar bonds.

Lecture 004: More Lewis Structures and Molecular Orbitals

We continued with examples of Lewis structures: SO2, SO3, N3-, H2SO4, N2O. We just worried about getting the right number of bonds and lone pairs, not the geometry of the molecules. In order to look at geometry we need to look at molecular orbitals. The formation of sp3 and sp2 hybrid orbitals was demonstrated for CH4 and CH2=CH2, respectively.

LEWIS DOT APPROACH TO MOLECULAR STRUCTURE

Predicts geometry, polarity, basicity, etc.
ONE COVALENT BOND = 2 SHARED ELECTRONS
1) Count total number of electrons available (by the row in the periodic table, e.g. C=4, N=5, O=6, F=7, Ne=8)
2) Find out how many electrons are needed: 8 for each C,N,O,F and related elements 2 for H
3) [(2)-(1)] / 2 = number of bonds in the molecule
4) After placing bonds, complete octets
5) Count electrons around atoms and place charges
6) Make sure total charge, total number of electrons and octets work out
