EA set the record for most downvoted comment in history on Reddit During the debacle surrounding microtransactions of EA’s Star Wars Battlefront 2, a community manager made a comment on Reddit that set the record for the most downvoted comment in the history of the world. That surpassed the old record by more than 600,000 votes. This begs the question, do companies really understand what community management is, or do they simply want the lowest paying person they can find for a customer support position.  Do you need a powerhouse of a PC for gaming? WIth enthusiast always talking about $1000 parts, do you need a powerhouse PC to play games today? What is going on with this headline? Google Stadia is going to offer free trials Head of Product, John Justice, stated during an interview that Google’s Stadia service will eventually release free promos. It could be expected that this would happen after the beginning of 2020 when Stadia fully launches. Will these free promos help sell the cloud streaming service? PewDiePie recently announces on stream that he is going to donate $50,000 to the ADL out of the kindness of his own heart. Many of his followers don’t think so, though. Many think he was blackmailed by the ADL into the donation. Is this blackmail, or some weird culture of toxicity? And then… he rescinds it…. Gamer Outrage Why is gamer outrage a thing? Caleb, explain to me why gamers are so toxic! Why is Nintendo direct such a big thing? Every time I read this thing, it’s nothing more than game announcements. Why do people go nuts over this? The Steam library is getting an overhaul The Steam Library is getting an overhaul after more than a decade. Soon gamers will be able to organize their library by Steam generate or user-generated tags. For instance, players can organize games by the ones they’ve played already or by RPG. The new update will go live on September 17th in the Steam Beta channel.  Half Life VR under development? Is Half Life getting a VR update? It certainly seems that way. Some enterprising individuals were able to decompile some program files which reveleaed an almost complete VR game. These files included code names commonly used for VR assets.  Fury Unleashed While browsing Reddit, Jon found an interesting thread posted by the developers of Fury Unleashed. It’s currently in Steam Early Access right now but will be fully released early next year. Fury Unleashed looks to be a 16-bit rougelite arcade game with a mix of Strider and Contra aspects told through a fun comic-like setting.  Steam Early Access The crew at You Died of Dysentery talk about whether they buy Steam Early Access games. Are Steam Early Access games worth the trouble? Should developers be using Steam Early Access as a way to beta test games, and should gamers have to pay for games if they are beta testers? Or, are Steam Early Access games a way of supporting game developers? Are women more susceptible to VR sickness? Are women more susceptible to VR sickness? The initial science says they might be. Women typically have a smaller IPD than men do. So, is this more of an issue with headset design? Magic Arena is exiting beta Magic The Gathering: Arena is finally exiting beta on September 26th, 2019! Historic format on MTGA causes a ruckus With the announcement of Magic Arena exiting Beta, it came with some rather hotly debated news. MTGA will be introducing a new set of cards next month which means that older sets are being rotated out of standard game play. So, WOTC created the Historic format, MTGA’s version of modern. Except cards that will be Historic will now cost double the price to craft. This comes with flimsy excuses from WOTC explaining these costs.  What is happening in the game subscription ecosystem? Ubisoft just announced UPlay+. This is yet another game subscription service that includes many games from their own catalog. Is this starting to become a trend where game developers are creating a fracture in the subscription ecosystems much like is happening in the video subscription service industry? Twitch streamers banned for receiving donations and baby butts? Cyberpunk 2077 drop binary gender choices from character creation too much applause, but were they the first? ShugiiKae banned from Twitch after receiving donations Twitch Streamer “ShugiiKage” was recently banned from Twitch after receiving donations from a sub that used stolen credit cards. Initially, that banning was permanent but was later reversed by Twitch after ShugiiKage challenged the banning on social media.  Twitch stream banned for looking at a baby butt! H2_gucio was recently banned after looking at baby butts during a stream! Don’t get in a tissie. It’s not that bad. The streamer went down a Wikipedia rabbit hole, saw an entry for diaper rash, and was greeted with that baby’s bum. The banning does not appear to be permanent.  Cyberpunk 2077 drops binary gender choices CD ProjektRed has dropped the traditional soci-normative gender selection that most video games use during the character creation process. Now it appears that character creation is simply done by choosing body and voice types. This comes after the developers received negative feedback from its initial character creation design.  Epic says Steam is unsustainable Epic’s Chris Early stated during an interview with The New York Times Valve’s Steam business model isn’t sustainable in the long run. Early said that the 70/30 split isn’t where the game industry is at anymore. This statement has to be questioned, though, if this is nothing more than a PR stunt for Epic. Apple traditionally takes the same 70/30 split for App Store apps. So does Google for Play Store apps. Epic has been vocal since opening the Epic game store that their revenue split is small than Steam, their main competitor.  Telltale Games is back! LCG entertainment is bringing back the Telltale brand and reviving some of its original IP. This doesn’t appear to be a complete comeback though. LCG has only hired a small portion of the original developers, and those developers have only been hired as contractors. LCG appears to be playing smart, though. Brian Waddle, CFO of LCG, stated in an interview that they would love to bring back the whole team, but at this time that is not feasible while re-launching the studio.  Valve fights back against EU ruling Valve is fighting back after the EU ruled against them and 5 other companies to stop geo-restricting game sales. 6 game distributors altogether were caught restricting EU citizens from purchasing games from other country’s versions of their game stores for a cheaper cost. This is apparently illegal in the EU. The five other companies in the suit have settled but Steam wants to duke it out.  Roman, convince Jon to play MineCraft Roman tries his best! Nintendo denies reports of trade-in program We recently discussed a supposed trade-in program from Nintendo to swap out old Switches for new ones in Episode 8. Nintendo disputed that claim, though, and said there is no trade-in program.  Phant0mlord proceeds with a lawsuit against Twitch Phant0mLord has filed a lawsuit against Twitch for his banning in 2016. In that lawsuit, he claims that Twitch violated their agreement because he was not given sufficient reasons for his removal from the platform. The final closings of that lawsuit will begin in September. Sony might bring first-party titles to the PC In a recent statement made by Sony’s execs, they allude to the idea of bringing first-party Playstation titles to the PC. This comes at a time where the game industry is starting to experience dramatic changes.  Google files a lawsuit against a person for fraudulent DMCA claims Google has filed a lawsuit against a person for filing fraudulent DMCA claims. It is against the law to file DMCA claims that are knowingly false. Google has stated that they suspect Christopher L. Brady of using false claims as a way to get personal information of certain YouTubers. In its claim, Google states that the time between when a DMCA claim was filed against a YouTuber, and when that YouTuber was swatted, seems suspicious.  Should this prove that Bradley did indeed swat this YouTuber, Bradley could be facing much more serious charges on top of a hefty lawsuit.  Google talks about Stadia with IGN at Gamescon IGN sat down with a rep from Google Stadia at Gamescon. In that interview, the Google rep talked about designing the controller, digital-only game ownership, and streaming games over existing ISP connections.  GameStop is trimming its workforce First, stories broke that GameStop had let go of a significant amount of staff at its GameInformer publication. This came as a surprise as subscribership was at a high for the magazine. Then a few days later, GameStop announced 120 more layoffs for its core business. It wasn’t long ago that GameStop also fired multiple salespeople. Could the end of GameStop be approaching faster then we expected? Tips and Picks Of The Week Jon Xbox Game Pass for PC This is a great option for anyone that wants access to an open library of games. It’s $5 a month, and the first month is currently only $1. Should we stop asking if games are making a political statement? Does that constant question cheapen it? Twitch ran porn on Ninja’s old channel!? Should we buy GPUs with ray tracing right now? Microsoft isn’t going all in on game streaming just yet. Discord has some confusing report metrics. All that, and more, on this week’s episode of You Died of Dysentery! The Episode’s Run Down Released August 23rd, 2019 Visit CycleAndDredge.Com for tons of great podcasts and media! Stop asking if games are political! GameIndustry.biz posted a public plea asking people to stop asking game development studios if a game is political stating that the questions diminishes both the actual question, the studio’s response, and the actual content of a game. Twitch ran porn ads on Ninja’s channel. After Ninja left Twitch for Mixer, Twitch used Ninja’s channel to post advertisements to other streams and apparently porn. Ninja is obviously not happy. The question has to be asked, though, despite this possibly harming Ninja’s brand, does Ninja have any right to complain? After all, he was using a free non-government provided platform. More pressingly, why was Twitch displaying porn advertisements on a platform that is known to have children regularly using it? Nvidia CEO says buying a graphics card without Ray Tracing would be crazy During a recent earnings call, Nvidia’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang stated that it would be crazy not to buy a graphics card with ray tracing today. Steam’s most recent hardware survey at the time of this writing shows that most gamers are using an Nvidia 1060 as their primary graphics card showing that many gamers clearly prefer the mid-range market of cards. The Nvidia 2060 card has shown to suffer heavy performance hits using ray-tracing, Nvidia’s current mid-tier RTX enabled GPU. It’s been stated that the first game requiring ray tracing won’t arrive until 2023 – the end of the expected life cycle for current new generation graphics cards. Still, in its current state, game engine don’t utilize full ray tracing but rather a mixture of rasterized lighting effects with ray tracing.  Microsoft says cloud gaming is inevitable, but years away Phil Spencer recently stated game streaming is years away and will not take over the industry anytime soon, though he does admit it will happen. This comes at a time when Stadia is hot in the news with a release date soon approaching. Could Phil Spencer be right? Questions still remain as to how services like Stadia and Xbox Cloud will be affected by things like poor network connectivity in rural areas, aging infrastructure that regularly causes ISP connection issues in urban areas, and imposed data caps from ISPs like Comcast. Specter also stated that the experience of local gameplay is not the same as playing video games streamed to a phone.  “The experience [streaming on a phone] is not the same as running the games on an Xbox One X. I’m not going to say that it’s an 8k 120-hertz thing. That’s not what we’re doing. We’re going to bring convenience and choice to you on your phone.” Phil Spencer, Microsoft Discord released its transparency report with some possibly confusing metrics? Discord released a transparency report detailing how and why it bans people in the hopes that users understand their policies better. That report includes ‘self harm’ and also states that it removed things like support to recent mass shooter’s manifesto. Take2, hostile or not? Take2 CEO stated that linking video games to violence is disrespectful to gun violence victims. This comes after Take2 sent private investigators recently to a

Twitch and Mixer may soon be under attack from President Trump. Google Fiber is back, and it may mean trouble for Comcast. Discord is adding a streaming service. Epic is back in the news, and this time not in a good way (it’s getting sued). Take2 is now the mafia. And more on this week’s episode of You Died of Dysentery! The Episode’s Run Down Released August 16th, 2019 Visit CycleAndDredge.Com for tons of great podcasts and media! Show Topics for You Died of Dysentery, Episode 7: President Trump May Announce an Executive Order that Restricts Section 230, Putting Internet Companies at Risk as Well as Free Speech Section 230 has largely allowed internet companies to not be responsible for the content that users may post on their platforms. It also gives internet companies the ability to remove content without being subject to legal action. In this case, Section 230 would have allowed 8chan to remove the Texas shooter’s manifesto without repercussion. All that may change as Trump is apparently getting ready to announce the Protecting Americans from Online Censorship act. This comes as Trump has railed against social media companies, claiming that they restrict the speech of those that identify with conservative parties – a claim that has never been substantiated by evidence.  This act would turn policing efforts over to the FTC and FCC. Trump hopes that the revision of Section 230 might limit social media’s power to remove content, especially without warning users first. This might sound great, but limiting the scope of Section 230 may also make social media networks liable for content posted on their platforms as well. This will inevitably mean that platforms will most likely just remove services or shut down – an affect that we saw after FOSTA went into law.  What does this have to do with gaming? Well, PAMOC could very well affect games like Fortnite as massive games like this could be considered a social media network. Likewise, places like Twitch and Mixer will be affected as well. Google Fiber is Back and Offering Wireless! Google Fiber is apparently now offering gigabit wireless connectivity for customers hoping to fully cut that cord in Austin Texas. Google Fiber Wireless is being offered through Google’s subsidiary company called Webpass. Google Fiber stopped expanding its network back in 2016 much to the dismay of potential customers in Kentucky. Many thought Google Fiber to be a dead product while others in the tech industry have long thought that Google was simply hitting the pause button to re-evaluate its deployment strategies. Many have thought that Google might switch to its Loon project instead of offering fiber. More recently, some have thought that Google might team up with Elon Musk. Others have stated that Google is simply waiting for the final 5g certifications to land from the IEEE.  Whatever the case may be, it seems as if Google might be back in the ISP business.  Discord is Adding Game Streaming to Its Voice Channels The idea is simple. People can stream their games to a small, select audience of up to ten people. This obviously isn’t a bid to take on Twitch or Mixer. Instead, Discord hopes to create a more intimate sharing experience. If only Discord could bring back couch-side multiplayer…   Discords game streaming service will be called Go Live and will launch on August 15th. It’s a somber and humbling feeling recording our first episode on the topic of mass shootings. We felt compelled to speak our thoughts and feelings after the recent killing sprees that took place this past week in the United States. We doubt that this episode will bring any serious change, but it’s our responsibility to discuss this nonetheless out of respect for those that lost their lives. It’s our responsibility as a community to keep attacking this topic, despite how tiring it may become until we can figure out how to solve this problem.
