4-Panel | Because Comics

Summary: Join our stalwart heroes as they delve into the strange and exciting world of comics, manga, graphic literature, and other sequential art forms (we draw the line at cave paintings ... maybe). GASP at the latest and sometimes weirdest news from both the West and the East. THRILL with reviews of the best (and often worst), comics and manga stories around. INSERT APPROPRIATE COMIC BOOK NOISES as your hosts get easily distracted and spend half the show talking about that time Captain America was a werewolf or the Justice League and the Suicide Squad had another hillbilly feud. ALL THIS AND MORE, ONLY ON 4-PANEL. Part of The Geek Show Podcast Network.

 31: 4-Panel Vol. 2, Issue 31 - Avengers Endgame SPOILER-CAST | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4102

Join Andrew and Mick as they discuss, in depth, what will inevitably become the most successful movie of all time. That's right, they get into the nitty-gritty of Avengers Endgame for a no-stone-left-unturned spoiler discussion.  A beefy spoiler cast, so, if you are one of the 6 people on the planet who have yet to see it DO NOT LISTEN to this episode until after you've seen the movie.  There are also some comics, too, eventually. Mick looks at Cullen Bunn's Asgardians of the Galaxy and the Avengers Endgame Prologue Comic.  30: 4-Panel Vol. 2, Issue 30 - April 2019 Comics Blowout | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3401

182 episodes deep into 4-Panel's run, we've finally cracked our review system. A comic can [be] "make me grin, it’s a comic win", "it’s almost worthwhile, charity pile" or "So bad it’s a sin, get in the bin". Now, which is which this week, you'll have to listen on to find out. This week Andrew and Mick (it's a coup de Rob) have another one of their monthly epic catch up episodes. They talk about What if: with Great Power (Marvel) , Predator: the essential comics, She Could Fly, The spine chillers, BRPD: Vampire, Domino soldier of fortune, Secret agent Deadpool, Trout: bits & bobs, and a fan-service manga that inspired our new review system that shall remain nameless (we do say the name on the show, so sorta nameless). 4-Panel rides back into town for another round-up of graphic literature goodness, and this week Andrew (the Comics Sage), Mick (Old Man Comics), are having a chat about comics that deserve more love and attention. After that the gang get back to business with the things that they've been reading, which are Bedtime Games, Ether: Copper Golems, the third volume of Stephen McCranie's Space Boy, Daughters of the Dragon, and Defenders: Best Defence.   If you've enjoyed this podcast then please share us with your friends or leave us a rating on your podcast app of choice.  28: 4-Panel Vol. 2, Issue 28 - Love That Joker! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4307

So we finally get our first proper look at the new, stand-alone movie about the Clown Prince of Crime starring Joaquin Phoenix, but can it match up to Jokers past? Does The Joker need a sympathetic origin story, and which actors played the role the best, the most accurate, and the worst?  Join Andrew, Mick and Rob for a field trip to the rather shiny and clean streets of Gotham to find out.  After that it’s time for our usual look at the comics and graphic novels that we’ve been reading, which this week are Xerxes by Frank Miller, volume 0 of Polar: The Black Kaiser by Victor Santos, Mr & Mrs X: Love And Marriage, Starcraft: Scavengers, and The Immortal Hulk: The Green Door. With the news that James Gunn has be rehired to direct the third chapter of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Andrew and Rob decided to take a look back at the long and somewhat complicated history of the space-faring team. From the current roster, through the strange team of the 1990’s to the originals, and yes, we DO talk about Starhawk … After that we return to our usual programming with the things we’ve been reading, which this week include X-Men: Extermination, Infinity Warps and the second volume of Hiro Mashima’s sci-fi Fairy Tail-esque adventure manga Eden’s Zero.  25: 4-Panel Vol. 2, Issue 25 - A Plethora of Captain Marvel | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4450

The newest addition to the MCU is out, so naturally we went to see it and we’re here to talk about its good points, its bad points, and what we thought about some of the changes made to the original comics. Now that might be enough for any other comic-book podcast, but 4-Panel takes pride in the fact that we have a lot of issues - which basically means prepare yourselves for a whole mess of Captain Marvel.  Kicking things off in our reading section is the full run of True Believers (2019): Captain Marvel (featuring reprints of Ms. Marvel #1, Marvel Team-Up: Spider-Man & Ms. Marvel #1, Marvel Super Heroes featuring Captain Marvel #1, Captain Marvel #41, The Avengers #89, The Uncanny X-Men #164, Captain Marvel (2012) #1, The Avengers #183, Ms. Marvel (1977) #20, The Avengers Annual (1964) #10). After that it’s the complete collected Infinity War, Captain Marvel Prelude, Marvel Platinum: The Definitive Captain Marvel, Marvel Universe: Time and Again, and Infinity War: Sleepwalker.  In fact, there’s so much Captain Marvel in this episode, we’re tempted to open a market stall.  24: 4-Panel Vol. 2, Issue 24 - Alternate Continuities In Comics | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4516

After so many reboots, remakes, rehashes, retries and revamps, how can anyone make sense of superhero comic-book continuity, especially where alternate timelines are concerned. Aside from the parallel worlds and changes to history that become part of that particular “universe”, there are also the special issues that are not necessarily related to the main storyline (e.g. Marvel’s What If … and DC’s Elseworlds) - and then it all goes boom when they reset the universe … but is still somehow kind of canonical? Get ready for a new crazy wall of comic-book continuities!  Okay, now that the initial insanity is over it’s business as usual with what we’ve been reading, which this week include a whole mess of spider-folks fighting energy vampires in Spider-Geddon, a visit to Jeff Lemire’s stranded superhero team in two volumes of Black Hammer (The Event and Age of Doom), supernatural high-school hijinks in Evan Dorkin’s Blackwood, Havok wreaking … havoc in X-Men: Until Our Hearts Stop, and the rather delightful first volume of Kino’s Journey: The Beautiful World.  23: 4-Panel Vol. 2, Issue 23 - February 2019 Comics Blowout | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3911

It's the end of the month, which means it's time for our new regular feature where we stare at the mountain of comics, graphic novels, manga and trade paperbacks, and try to cover as many as possible in one episode! Can we do it? Maybe. Will we get injured? Probably. Will the mountain still be there afterwards, silently judging us? Most definitely. As for the very minor dent we made in the cartoonishly large pile of comics, that was made up of Sword Daughter: She Brightly Burns by Brian Wood and Mack Chater, Multiple Man: It All Makes Sense In The End, The Immortal Hulk: Or Is He Both?, Iron Fist: Phantom Limb, Marvel 2-In-1: The Thing & The Human Torch - Next Of Kin, Thor: God Of Thunder Reborn, and X-23: Family Album.  22: 4-Panel Vol. 2, Issue 22 - Is Alita: Battle Angel A Good Manga Adaptation? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4334

The Hollywood live-action adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s seminal science fiction series Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm), is out in cinemas, but have James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez finally cracked the formula for adapting manga and anime? Andrew, Mick and Rob went to the cinema to find out, but one of them convinced the other two to try the cinema “experience” known as 4DX for the first time. What could possibly go wrong?  After that it’s back to business as usual with our regular look at comics and manga that we’ve been reading, which this week are Moon Knight: Phases, Moon Girl And The Marvel Universe, the second collected volume of Die Wergelder by Hiroaki Samura, and Deadpool: Mercin’ Hard For The Money.  21: 4-Panel Vol. 2, Issue 21 - The Punisher Season 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4496

Although Netflix has had its ups and downs with the TV adaptations of Marvel franchises, in general the shows have been well-received. But with Disney announcing a new streaming service and the cancellation of every Marvel show on Netflix, how would the highly anticipated second season of The Punisher fare?  Join Andrew, Mick and Rob for another lively discussion about The Punisher (only this time without all of the weirdness). After that it’s time for the usual comic-book and manga round-up which this week include Venom: First Host, the second volume of Space Boy by Stephen McRanie, The Mighty Crusaders, Edge of Spider-Geddon and Star Wars: Doctor Aphra - The Catastrophe Con.  20: 4-Panel Vol. 2, Issue 20 - Comics That Would Make Good TV Shows | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4079

The Flash TV series proved that it was possible to do superpowers well on the small screen, so this week Andrew, Mick and Producer Rob are looking at other comic-book possibilities for television. We’ve got a whole range of possibilities that include Suicide Squad as Mission Impossible, B.P.R.D. in the style of The X-Files, an Expanse-like version of Rick Remender's Low, Tank Girl as a low-budget surreal comedy (in the style of The Mighty Boosh or The IT Crowd), a goofy buddy-comedy starring Booster Gold and Blue Beetle, a strange DC-based concept that culminates in ... a Justice Society of America series, and more besides. After that it’s time for our usual round-up of the things we’ve been reading, which this week are Doctor Strange: Across The Universe, Tony Stark/Iron Man: Self-Made Man, Gigantic by Rick Remender, The Life of Captain Marvel, and Avatar: The Last Airbender - Imbalance part 1.  19: 4-Panel Vol. 2, Issue 19 - Who's That Titan? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4099

Fans of DC's Teen Titans franchise have generally been well served when it comes to TV adaptations of the adolescent hero team. From the much-loved anime-esque cartoon series from 2003, to Young Justice and the current Teen Titans Go! - there aren't many superheroes that have that kind of popularity. With the release of Netflix's new Titans series, will the darker take on these youthful do-gooders convince the die-hard fans, or will it be another Inhumans?  But the history of the team is a lot larger and more convoluted than people might think, which leads Andrew to test Mick and Rob in an impromptu game of Who's That Titan? After that it's business as usual with the things that we have been reading, which this week are Memorabilia by Sergio Ponchione, Cloak & Dagger: Shades of Grey, and The Hunt For Wolverine (Weapon Lost, Claws of a Killer, Mystery in Madripoor and The Adamantium Agenda).
