To compel is to make someone do something forcefully which may be for a positive outcome (result). Sometimes people are compelled purely (mainly) for the sense of duty. The teachers also compel students to follow certain rules and regulations. Compelling is not always directly forcing others to do any work or to follow any rules. This means that the opportunity of getting promoted was lost only because of his procrastination. These are called etiquette.
