Following a failed suicide attempt, ageing composer Antonio Salieri is consigned to psychiatric institution while babbling incoherently. When a young priest comes to visit, Salieri offers an account of his life. In particular, he elaborates upon a confession that he made on the night that he tried to take his life, that he murdered an illustrious young rival by the name of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. At time of recording, it was ranked the 82nd best movie of all time on the Internet Movie Database.

This year, we are proud to announce Anime April, a fortnight looking at two of the animated Japanese films on the list. We hope to make this an annual event. This year, we watched a double feature of Isao Takahata's Hotaru no haka and Hayao Miyazaki's Tonari no Totoro to commemorate the thirtieth anniversary of their original release in April 1988. This week, the second part of the double bill, Tonari no Totoro. Introducing perhaps the most iconic character in Japanese animation, and perhaps one of the most iconic characters in all animation, My Neighbour Totoro is the story of two young children who move to the Japanese countryside in the aftermath of the Second World War and befriend the mysterious eponymous creature who serves as a guardian of the local environment. At time of recording, it was ranked the 137th best movie of all time on the Internet Movie Database.

Regarded as one of the most affecting animated films ever made, Grave of the Fireflies tells the story of two children caught in the middle of the United States' firebombing of Japan. Adapted from Akiyuki Nosaka's semi-autobiographical novella of the same name, Grave of the Fireflies is a harrowing portrayal of the consequences of war, particularly upon those in need of society's protection. At time of recording, it was ranked the 57th best movie of all time on the Internet Movie Database.

In an apocalyptic Detroit, a giant corporation announces its plans to privatise local law enforcement. In order to further this end, the company announces plans for a cybernetic law enforcement official. All that they need is a volunteer. In feudal Japan, a small village finds itself threatened by an army of bandits. In a desperate attempt to protect their barley crop from the marauding menace, the villages decide to hire a samurai to the protect the village. Inevitably, they end up with more than they bargained for. At time of recording, it was ranked the 19th best movie of all time on the Internet Movie Database. NOTE: Partly to mirror the structure of the film, and partly because watching the film AND recording the podcast took a long time, there is an intermission in this episode. The intermission runs from 1:32:15 to 1:34:12.

The 250 and When Irish Eyes Are Watching are crossing over for a St. Patrick's Day treat. Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon. Barry Lyndon is the epic story of the eponymous character, a dashing Irish rogue who seems to bumble his way through the eighteenth century. Using nothing but his wits, Barry manages to manipulate his way to the fame and fortune that he so covets, only to discover a fortune won is not so easily kept. At time of recording, it was ranked the 225th best movie of all time on the Internet Movie Database.

Paul Rusesabagina is a manager at the Hôtel des Mille Collines in Kigali, who finds himself in the midst of the Rwandan Genocide of April 1994. With no outside aid, and with no other option, Paul sets about trying to protect the Tutsi refugees who have found shelter in the hotel from the Hutu militia amassed outside. At time of recording, it was ranked the 190th best movie of all time on the Internet Movie Database.
