Most of the jury assumes that they'll be done within the hour. However, against all of that evidence and in spite of all of that expectation, one member of the group isn't entirely convinced that the accused is guilty. Carl suggested a crossover episode taking a look at the list, and particularly some of the classic movies listed on it. So this week, Raoul Walsh's White Heat. Fleeing the authorities after a train robbery that resulted in two murders, Cody Jarrett latches on to an unconventional scheme to evade detection. Jarrett turns himself into the authorities for a crime he didn't commit, earning a lesser sentence and putting him in the clear. However, things are changing rapidly for Cody, and the ground is very quickly shrinking out from under him. Antonius Block is a knight returning home after a long crusade to the Middle East, and horrified to find that the black death is ravaging his homeland. On the beach, Block is confronted by the spectral figure of the Grim Reaper himself. Block challenges Death to a game of chess, hoping that he might escape his opponents glare. As Block continues his journey home, he tries to make sense the fleeting nature of human existence and seeks desperate reassurance that something - anything - lies waiting beyond. With the help of her neighbour Kyla, Die works desperately to strike a balance with Steve. However, whatever sense of equilibrium this dysfunctional family finds is destined to come crashing down around their ears. This year, we watched a double feature of Hayao Miyazaki's Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta and Hauru no ugoku shiro. We'll also be covering a bonus on a recent entry on the list next week, Naoko Yamada's Koe no katachi. This week, the third and final installment of this year's Ani-May, Koe no katachi. Teenager Shoya Ishida finds himself haunted by guilt over his merciless bullying of his deaf classmate Shoko Nishimiya six years earlier. Coming back from a suicide attempt, Shoyo makes an awkward attempt to reconnect and reconcile with Shoko, but are either of them prepared for the strong emotions that this reunion will provoke and the consequences that it will have for their friends and their families? This week, the second part of the double bill, Hauru no ugoku shiro, Miyazaki's first film after the breakout success of Spirited Away. Chance encounters with both a mysterious young wizard and spiteful old witch find Sophie Hatter cursed. The eighteen-year-old young woman finds herself trapped in the body of a ninety-year-old crone. Never one to be defeated or outwitted, Sophie embarks on an adventure to lift the curse that takes her into the wilderness and to the heart of a majestic ambulatory castle inhabited by a fascinating bunch of misfits. As war simmers on the horizon, Sophie finds herself drawn to the temperamental but sensitive young magician Howl, but can they ever find peace? This week, the first part of the double bill, Miyazaki's Tenkû no shiro Rapyuta, the first official Studio Ghibli film. Perhaps overshadowed by the movies either side of it - Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind preceding it and My Neighbour Totoro and Grave of the Fireflies following it - Castle in the Sky is in some ways an archetypal Hayao Miyazaki film. What begins as a chance encounter between a lonely boy and a girl who falls to Earth evolves into a fable about the perils of militarism and the importance of environmentalism. The only catch is that to earn that money, these four men will have to drive extremely volatile nitroglycerine across some of the most treacherous terrain imaginable. Those who survive will have enough to escape the hell in which they've found themselves, and those who don't won't care. This time, Céline Sciamma's Portrait de la jeune fille en feu. Marianne is a portrait artist who is summoned to a remote island and assigned a strange task. The Contessa would task Marianne with preparing a portrait of her daughter Héloïse, which might be sent to a waiting suitor in Milan. There is just one complication; Héloïse has refused to sit for any portrait painter, and so Marianne must paint the young woman without her knowledge. However, as Marianne studies her subject more intensely, she finds herself more and more drawn to this isolated and lonely soul. There can only be one explanation: Sam has a mole buried within the police department. However, as the police close in around him, Sam becomes convinced that Wong has is own embedded operative.
