Rain advancing from west to east across the region will be a sign of the pattern change coming to the Northeast. Some of the rain from Bertha, which made landfall as a tropical storm along the South Carolina coast on Wednesday morning, will become intertwined with rain from an advancing cold front from the Midwest. Cloud cover, rain and a breeze for a time will add to the dramatic temperature drop. AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures are likely to dip to 10 degrees lower than the actual temperature due to rainfall on Friday and Saturday then breezy conditions on Saturday and Sunday. During Wednesday afternoon and night, Tropical Storm Bertha will weaken upon moving well inland. Interaction with land and fast movement will be a great limiting factor with major strengthening of this feature, but the main impact will be a continuation of heavy rain moving forward during the middle of the week over the Carolinas then to some extent farther north over the central Appalachians from later Wednesday night to Thursday. After the first two weeks of May featured well below-average temperatures across the Northeast and East Coast, Mother Nature will conclude the month on a much different note as summerlike conditions are expected to settle in. The threat for flooding will escalate across the south-central United States this week as rounds of heavy rain and storms batter the region. Many cities across the South Central states have already recorded more than their average amount of rainfall for the entire month of May. This week, many of the same locations may be able to repeat that feat as another heavy rain event sets up over the region. Spring has been a cool and wet one across the eastern United States, preventing people from escaping to the outdoors at times during the shelter-in-place orders. However, conditions may let up just in time for the holiday weekend with temperatures expected to reach summery levels. Others may not be so lucky as a stormy pattern developing this week will persist straight into the weekend. Sunshine and rising temperatures the past few days have given the Northeast a desperately needed reprieve from the chilly and dreary weather that pestered the region during much of April into May. Even though the polar vortex will retreat and cold is not expected to return, unsettled weather will dampen the region and keep it cooler than normal much of next week. The soggier stretch will kick off with a bang on Friday as severe thunderstorms will threaten portions of the Northeast. However, forecasters have good news for the many warm-weather fans that have been left to wonder what season it is anyway amid the unusual chill: much warmer weather is on the way. And this time, a more typical spring and even summerlike pattern is expected to stick around for most areas.
