These Financial Rules Were Made to Be Broken #416 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3495

Do you know anybody who’s never broken the speed limit? Even just a single person- in your entire life?! And if you’re being honest you’re less likely to treat it as a speed limit, and more like a speed minimum. We think we should be going at least that fast, if not more! For better or worse the speed limit is one of those rules in life that consistently is not followed. We break that rule because we believe we can still drive safely, even while exceeding the speed limit. Well the same is true with our personal finances and the money moves that we make. There are a lot of financial rules out there that many believe must never be broken or even challenged, while we believe a certain amount of liberty can be taken. It’s not that we believe that the rules should be done away with altogether- they’re important rules of thumb and reference points that we should definitely pay attention to, especially early on in our financial journey. But as you gain more knowledge and experience there are some financial rules that were made to be broken. Listen as we cover some of those rules as well as why it’s ok to be a conscientious objector!  The Unspoken Rules Of Career Success with Gorick Ng #415 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3739

Excelling in your career depends on more than just doing a great job. This is the basis for Gorick Ng’s best-selling book, “The Unspoken Rules: Secrets to Starting Your Career Off Right.” Gorick is a career adviser at Harvard, focusing on coaching first-generation, low-income students. But before that, he gained plenty of professional experience from working in management consulting, investment banking, and as a researcher with the Harvard Business School.  What if You Won the Lottery? #410 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3030

Winning the lottery shouldn’t be a part of your financial plan- but why are we so enthralled by the idea of winning the lottery?! On average, Americans spend over $1,000 every year for the chance to strike it rich. That’s a lot of wasted money that could be going towards literal investments. But even though we’re not going to win millions, statistically speaking, this exercise can provide some insights about the ways we want to spend our money and our time. This is helpful because there is a much higher likelihood that we would experience some sort of windfall in our lives whether that be a bonus at work, proceeds from a home sale, or even an inheritance. And if we haven’t taken the time to think through what we would do in these scenarios, there’s a good chance we could make the wrong decision in the heat of the moment. We’re going to get personal and share what we would do if we won the lottery, and we’re also going to explain how you can come up with your own money mission statement.  Striving for Work-Life Balance (Bestie Ep) #407 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3036

Feeling overworked?! Between trying to get ahead at your 9-5 and pursuing side hustles, chances are really high that you feel like your work-life balance is out of whack. That doesn’t even take into account that more of us are working from home. We find ourselves chronically fatigued and exhausted because we give too much to our work, leaving little left for ourselves and those around us who we love. For instance, as a result most Americans don’t take all their vacation time- and when they do, they find it impossible to actually stop working! This ongoing cycle of never-ending work is leading more folks than ever to despise the work they once loved while other important areas in their lives like relationships, health, and hobbies continue to suffer. This is an important topic for us to cover as we seek to implement some practices to restore that work-life balance and then create boundaries to maintain that balance. During this episode we enjoyed an I Learned It by Watching You by Burial Beer Co and Other Half Brewing - a big thanks to our friends Waffles on Wednesday for donating this collaboration beer to the show.
