Sometimes, librarians are called on to help set up libraries for small organizations, non-profits, and schools. There’s rarely a lot of money to throw at an ILS so, if you’re looking for free, open source alternatives, Dan’s got your back. YouTube Listen to the show on YouTube Links Web Librarian Plugin on WordPress – Set up a free, easy to use ILS using WordPress! Web Librarian website – Get more information on the Web Librarian plugin. Web Librarian documentation – While the docs aren’t 100% complete, they’re still very helpful Example Web Librarian PAC – A simple example of a WebLibrarian PAC on the Cyberpunk Librarian website. OpenBiblio – A free, open source ILS with many of the features you’ll find in a proprietary ILS. OpenBiblio documentation -You’ll need this, but it’s not a gargantuan undertaking to get it up and running. OpenBiblio Add Ons – Get yourself some Z39.50. Classify by OCLC – Need a Dewey number? Look it up on Classify. MARC records – Get basic MARC records from LoC. MARC records from library PACs – Polaris PowerPACs can provide MARC records under the Librarian’s View. Try the link for MARC data from the PowerPAC at Maricopa County Library District, or check out an example, or try other PACs in the area. Mesa Public Library Phoenix Public Library Chandler Public Library Amazon to MARC converter – Want to make a MARC record with a minimum of fuss, this Amazon to MARC converter can help. MarcEdit – If you must use MARC, use this. phpMyAdmin – Because writing SQL by hand is tedious. Koha – A FOSS ILS used by libraries large and small. Fully functional, completely awesome, and hard as nails. Evergreen – Another excellent, fully featured FOSS ILS used by libraries all over the world. Sometimes you need an eBook, article, musical track, movie, or something like that. Sometimes that thing isn’t available through the normal channels. You’ve tried, but you just can’t put your hands on it. The system is letting you down. Facing a time crunch, trying to help, you need to go outside and around the system. And for that, there’s the Cyberpunk Librarian. Links The Pirate Bay is the World’s Most Efficient Public Library by Zacqary Adam Xeper. The New Yankee Workshop with Norm Abram. Private Internet Access – My preferred VPN provider. ClamWin Portable – Portable virus scanner that lives on a USB drive. uBlock Origin for Firefox – Memory friendly ad blocking for Firefox. uBlock Origin for Chrome – Memory friendly ad blocking for Chrome. The Proxy Bay – Because sometimes The Pirate Bay moves around. Transmission – Transmission BitTorrent client. Cross platform and works everywhere. HexChat – Free, open source and cross platform IRC client that works on Windows, OS X, and Linux. LimeChat – Free, open source IRC client for OS X. Also available for iOS. mIRC – Non-free IRC client for Windows that’s been around for a long time. ManWithoutModem’s excellent post on how to find eBooks through various sources. Calibre – Sure, there are other software solutions for managing eBooks, but who cares? This is the real deal, free and open source, and 100% cross platform. You cannot beat the feature set and you cannot beat the plug-ins. DeDRM Tools – A Calibre plugin that strips DRM whenever you import an eBook. Google Scholar – If you’re looking for scholarly articles, try this first. Library Genesis Database – Feed your DOI to LibGen and see what happens. Oh, wait, what’s a DOI? – Wikipedia has a fantastic explanation. CrossRef.org – When you need a DOI, CrossRef has your back. r/Scholar – The Scholar subreddit, ask and you may receive.
