 Hiatus Until March 2019 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:28

We are taking a few months to organize, publicize and get ready for the next season of the Virtual Expats Podcast. There are many changes coming your way in the next season, starting in early March 2019. In Season 4 we will experiment with a mini-season, which will be a weekly long form interview episode for 4 weeks in a row, topped off with one Connections episode to tie it all together. Also, we've learned from our online savvy expat guests that it is now possible to have a group presence on Facebook without getting into the personal timeline aspect of it. Thus, we have launched a Facebook Group for this and all of our other podcasts, called “Steph PodTubes” cause, well, we have 3 podcasts with accompanying YouTube channels. Lastly, we’d really appreciate it if you would take this quick 2 minute Listener Survey. Would love to hear from you!  Ep 73: Creatrix Tiara : Performance Artist, Creative Soul & Virtual Thought Leader | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:26:06

THIS WEEK we chat with Creatrix Tiara. Tiara started interacting with others online in chat rooms at 10 years old while IRL living in Malaysia. Over the years Tiara’s geographical path has included locations in Malaysia, Australia and the U.S. While Tiara’s geographic life shifted, Tiara’s online life seems to have had an upward trajectory in notariety and impact due to the candid and eloquent vocalization of immigrant and queer issues. Like many Online Content Creators, Tiara’s work going viral has not balanced notoriety with financial freedom. But perhaps that will change with the Queer Lady Magician show Tiara is currently doing (the next round of which will take place at the Melbourne LGBTQ Festival Midsumma from January 30-February 3, 2019). Judging from the voluminous body of work, Tiara will no doubt keep writing and creating for as long as possible. This passion to analyze, share and question is what first led me to Tiara’s creations and is why I love keeping up to date on what Tiara is doing.   Items mentioned in this episode: -Creatrix Tiara’s website AND  Patreon page -Virtual Expat Podcast review of Tiara’s work from July 2017, episode 40 -ABC (Australian network) “What’s On Your Phone” series -Grey Matter -Savage Garden’s “Crash and Burn” song in sign language -”All My Friends Are Leaving Brisbane” (movie) -Tiara’s Educate Deviate Education blog -Tiara’s Viral blog post ”Goodbye, Ello: Privacy, Safety, and Why Ello Makes Me More Vulnerable to My Abusers and Harassers” that was picked up by the Washington Post AND The New Yorker interview that ensued -Slut Walk AND Tiara with a poster of her viral quote -Gaby Dunn article on the financial hardships of being a YouTuber Would love to hear from you!  Ep 72: Connections: What is genuinely worth your attention?    | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 16:52

THIS WEEK we use 3 short videos to help us analyze and accept our phone/tech agency. First, we talk about a video in Vox’s new By Design series, where they chat with Tristan Harris of the Time Well Spent Initiative. Tristan spent time as a Digital Ethicist at technology companies that were designing the digital tools that fight to keep our attention and came to conclusions that could even out the persuasiveness of these very tools in our favor. Next, we review Tristan’s TEDTalk where he addresses these same issues and comes up with a three prong call to action to help us take back the power of our app usage. Lastly, we return to Vox for a video from their The Goods series and explore emoji tracking, yes, that is a thing now. As far back as 2016, Twitter started to release our emoji data to advertisers and it has been used since then to target our emotions to buy their goods. These 3 videos are meant to increase awareness of what is happening behind our screens and to help us make informed decisions, not to scare us into thinking that technology is bad. It’s not. We need to slow down in this race for connections and information and start to make very conscious choices instead of just trying out every new app that becomes available. SHOW LINKS: -It’s not you. Phones are designed to be addicting (video), part of Vox’s By Design Video series -TEDTalk by Tristan Harris, “How a handful of tech companies control billions of minds every day” (video) -Tristan’s organization Center for Humane Technology - ”Why advertisers are tracking your emojis

Ep 71: Alison Maciejewski: An American Expat With Food, Technology & Microfinance Exploring Tendencies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 01:15:19

THIS WEEK Alison Maciejewski makes us think long and hard about food photos on social media, wanderlust articles that try to tackle culture and the linguistic barriers of the Internet. But the conversation is not all serious, we have some fun comparing emoji options on Line (in Thailand) and WeChat (in China), what and where “ugly delicious food” is, and how using teen dramas are a good way to learn the Thai language. Where to find Virtual Expat Podcast: Virtual Expats Podcast website,  YouTube Channel, subscribe on : iOS , Android devices, RSS, and our email list: for weekly podcasting updates THIS WEEK we chat with Steve, who left the UK for a trip to Spain quite a number of years ago. After living a number of years both on and offline in mainland China, he moved to Hong Kong earlier this year, where he now works as a Life Coach. Like yours truly, he has been an avid user of online technologies and social media from the beginning and has a lot of stories of wonderful and not so wonderful things that have happened online. And, also like myself, he has a lot of questions about what the hell we are doing online and how sustainable our virtual selves are going forward. His expat geographic life and VRL (virtual reality life) do in fact seem to affect each other in a rather interesting way, so have a listen and let us know what you think.  Ep 67: Rebroadcast of Over There Podcast, the one before it morphed into Virtual Expats | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 02:27:35

Racism is explored in this episode via The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah’s geopat lens AND English teachers in Taiwan experience circa 2004. We also cover slow fast food, inspiringly fluent Chinese language speakers, Chinese New Years boyfriends for hire and more expat and geopat goodness for everyone. NOTE: This is a rebroadcast of Virtual Expats episode 60. While I recoup from a nasty change of season cold and catch up on studying for my next Mandarin Chinese language test (HSK 3, December 2nd!), I want to reach back and look at how this podcast has evolved over the past season. This is the last episode from the last season, when the podcast was a segmented mammoth of expat topics and such.  Ep 63: Sowmya: Data Scientist & Computational Linguist | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:20

Virtual Expats Podcast website, YouTube Channel, Virtual Expats Amazon Affiliate Link Subscribe to Virtual Expats Podcast on : iOS , Android devices, RSS Sowmya Vajjala is a Data Scientist, a Computational Linguist and one of the most intelligent and down to earth people you will ever meet. She is from India, lived in Germany for her PhD program and then taught at Iowa State University in the U.S., which is where I met her. She has since moved to Toronto, Canada, where she was during this conversation. Personally, she has impacted my life in ways I am only beginning to understand. But that is all explained in the podcast itself. Her perspective on if living in different countries impacts people’s online experiences is very different than what we have heard so far in this podcast. This honest, matter of fact approach to the messiness of online life as it currently exists is, frankly, refreshing. I think you are going to appreciate this very different point of view on social media, geographical movement and why we do what we do online. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Music courtesty of Damon Castillo, https://www.damoncastillo.com/ Song "I Hope You Figured It Out" on the "Mess of Me" album. Yup, that's the story of how Ronald and I met and it happened in just a few hours. I was listening to his Creativity Roots Podcast and loving it. The rest of the story is in the intro, so I don't want to spoil that part. What I will say is that we met at just the right time. I struggle greatly with accepting my creativity and he wears his like a favorite tshirt. He also has a heavy online presence, for both personal and professional reasons. And with that presence came opportunity, responsibility and love (oh wait until you hear his jokes!) Thank you Ronald for reminding me how freeing it can be to embrace who we are without judgement both on and offline. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Ronald's Creativity Roots Podcast Website:  https://creativityroots.com/ 54:00 Macklemore kid video: https://youtu.be/17WC8H_Ugm4 -------------------------------- Music courtesty of Damon Castillo, https://www.damoncastillo.com/ Song "I Hope You Figured It Out" on the "Mess of Me" album.
