LIVE from CNP Expo 2019! -Social Engineering Calls | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3124

There is no better way to end the first season of Online FraudCast than with a live recording in front of hundreds of online fraud professionals! Starting off with "What The Fraud", we hear from two unassuming audience members, some of their favorite "fraud stories". Then, diving right into the topic of the episode, social engineering. Brett brought "show & tell" to the audience...the result of him testing his skills in social engineering prior to the conference. He shares the goals of a social engineer, some of their tactics, and the first thing an experienced criminal will do before placing orders with fraudulent credit cards.  Then, Karisse shares some of the "academics" of preventing social engineering, along with some best practices. All of this information culminates into a demonstration of a call between a fraudster attempting social engineering & a customer service representative. One of the biggest takeaways: Social engineering is not as obvious as we often think it will be!  Online FraudCast will be back with Season 2 in July!  Bonus episode: Merchants Are From Mars; Vendors are from Venus | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4696

Over the last year or so, Karisse has noticed a large divide between two groups that *should* be unified in their fight against online fraud and abuse: merchants and solution providers. This divide has led to frustrations, assumptions and burned bridges. Because Karisse has a 10,000 foot view of the industry and works with both merchants and solution providers in her consultancy, she's in a unique position to share the perspective of each side to one another. She also posted a survey on LinkedIn asking merchants & vendors to share their perspectives, stories, and advice to the other side, and received way more responses than she was expecting! She'll share some of the best responses to those questions, in addition to her own observations and insights.  Solution providers will learn more about merchants: how they think, what they care about and how they want to be sold to. And Merchants will learn how to better communicate with vendors and to get the most out of vendor interactions, and learning more about the various solutions in the space. -And both will learn more from each side's perspectives.  This episode is being released prior to one of the main industry events in online fraud and payments: CNP Expo, but the advice and insight that is packed into this hour will help year round.  Subscribe to Online FraudCast to be alerted when the next episode is out!  Gift Card Phone Scammers Impacting Popular Merchants + Other Current Topics | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3320

Season 1 of the Online FraudCast is nearing an end, and Brett & Karisse talk about changes to the podcast for the upcoming Season 2 (by late June). Brett also shares some of his experience speaking at the CISO academy at Quantico last week, and they both talk about the importance of strategies to prosecute cybercriminals in order to start holding them accountable, something Brett feels passionate about, as going to prison was the catalyst for him changing his ways. Karisse talks about a gift card scam hitting a lot of multi-channel retailers with private label gift cards. While it's a scam impacting consumers, many merchants are footing the bill for these scams.  The Demise of Dark Web Markets + Triangulation Websites Making a Come Back | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3647

Recently, two of the most well known dark web markets have been taken down by law enforcement. What does this mean for the eco-system of cybercrime and the current landscape of fraud prevention if it's gotten harder to go about business as usual for these fraudsters? Or, does it mean they will work around it & come back stronger than ever?  Additionally, a large online retailer recently alerted Karisse to new websites popping up selling products from the legitimate retailer's company at unrealistic prices, hosted by legitimate hosting companies. While triangulation is not new, the approach and sophistication of these new sites are. And in many cases, the legitimate merchant is shipping the stolen products directly to the unassuming consumer of the fraudulent website, and not even knowing it. How can companies know if their products are being bought with stolen cards & re-sold? What can they do to stop them? By using an example of one website that was recently identified as a triangulation website, Brett & Karisse walk you through what is being done, and what can be done about it.  The World of Drop Addresses + The Fall of the WannaCry "Hero" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4434

One of the most asked about topics by online retailers (with physical goods) are around drop addresses. Residential addresses that are used unknowingly by the owner to receive packages, re-shippers, mules, "legitimate" freight forwarders....and now virtual addresses. What are all of these and how do they work? Why do fraudsters choose one over the other and what are they looking for in a place to ship items to? And, with so many different locations for fraudsters to select to receive your company's products, how do you identify when a shipping address looks legitimate but isn't?  But first, Brett talks about the "twitter war" he got in to with the infamous hero of the "WannaCry" ransomware attack and his thoughts on if Marcus Hutchins has truly turned over a "new leaf". -Who better to critique him than a former fraudster, that knows all his tricks?  Online FraudCast will be recording a live episode May 22 in San Francisco at CNP Expo!  Calling fraudsters and Other Tips for Verifying Manual Review Orders | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4857

Brett & Karisse are back together on the podcast and this week they dive in to a great question from a listener: (when it comes to manual reviews) "When should we call the phone # on the order and what questions can we ask to verify if they're the cardholder or not?". Karisse shares tips from when she was a merchant, including one of her favorite "fraud stories".  Fraud industry Observations - Karisse's Takeaways from MRC 2019 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 2843

The online fraud prevention industry has changed a lot. Even in the last decade, we have seen hundreds of 3rd party solutions enter the market, all promising to reduce chargebacks and false positives. We've also seen venture capital firms invest Billions of dollars in fraud prevention technology companies. And we've seen thousands more professionals join the industry as merchants, vendors and everything in between. What do these things mean for the current "state of the industry" and what can we learn for the next 10 years? In this episode, Karisse shares some of her thoughts on these topics after returning from one of the largest online fraud prevention conferences in the US, the Merchant Risk Council's spring conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. After having 100s of conversations with leading online merchants, talking to several 3rd party providers and walking through the exhibition hall, she'll re-cap her observations, learning opportunities and suggestions for how we can all move forward in the next decade, and beyond.  Learn more about your ad choices.  On Today's Internet: Perception = Reality and Trust = Currency | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 4231

Beyond fraud prevention, what is a company's corporate and moral responsibility when it comes to content moderation and keeping their users safe? That is the question Brett & Karisse explore after another tragedy (Christchurch, NZ) was live-streamed on a social media platform. As commerce continues to connect strangers, allows people upload content without anyone reviewing it first, As commerce continues to connect strangers, allows people to upload content without being reviewed or approved first, and strangers get in each other's cars, houses, etc....the need to pivot from "just" preventing payment fraud to gaining consumer's trust and keeping them safe is apparent. But, what do you do when the company strategy conflicts with the strategy of a Trust & Safety team? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Stop. Collaborate & Listen..."Bad guys" work together; "Good guys" should too | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3669

Collaboration in fraud fighting is essential, and on this episode, Brett & Karisse explain why it's important and various ways to collaborate within the industry. But first, they start off with a "What The Fraud" segment that involves El Chapo, Pre-paid debit cards and Brett being offered a job by the Sinaloa Drug Cartel!  One of the main factors that contributed to Brett's success as a fraudster, was collaboration with his peers. Mostly on online forums, but also in person, online fraudsters share everything with each other. From which companies are the easiest to target, to the specific methods of various fraud strategies to online tutorials that include a glossary and tests. But, for the "good guys", it's much harder to collaborate with each other. It's equally just as important to share best practices, new fraud tactics that you're experiencing and which tools work best for which issues as it is for the "bad guys" to share with each other. But, privacy policies, competitive advantages and PR restrictions, it can be a challenge. Though difficult, it's not impossible and creating opportunities for merchant collaboration has been a passion project in Karisse's career, and it's become a topic important to Brett as well, and they share some of the ways they suggest to learn from others in the industry. Brett & Karisse will be recording an episode of Online FraudCast live at CNP Expo 2019, May 22-23 in San Francisco. Join them!  The "C" Word for Online Merchants: Chargebacks (They aren't as overwhelming as you might think!) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 3816

One of the most requested topics for this podcast has been around chargebacks. Listeners have even started referring to this as Karisse's "favorite subject" (it's definitely high on the list!). While an hour is a short amount of time to try to explain everything about chargebacks, this should be a good primer to get you thinking about your company's chargeback strategy. As much of a pain as they are, they can also have value in providing business intelligence to your company and internal processes, as well as a way to track your team's progress and efforts, as you see incoming chargeback volume reduced and recovered chargeback revenue increased.  In this solo episode, Karisse discusses the overall chargeback process, as well as her own philosophy on chargeback management, which has been validated over 14 years of experience in chargeback reduction and recovery.  Subscribe to Online FraudCast on your favorite podcast platform to be alerted when a new episode has been released.  As mentioned at the beginning of the episode, Online FraudCast will be recording an episode live on stage at CNP Expo (San Francisco, May 21-23)!
