David has been working with artist Mark Stafford on the graphic novel Lip Hook, which will be published by SelfMadeHero and has been partly funded by the Arts Council. Part of the inspiration for the story is the Magdalena Solis religious cult reported in Mexico in the 1960's and this story will be set in an isolated English village. The Graphic novel will be launched at the Comic Art Festival (twitter.com/comicartfestival) in Kendal in October 2018. We also get to talk to David about some of his previous work for creator owned titles and also working with the major publishers on well established properties/characters.If you'd like to pick up some of David's work (digital or physical) you can get it on our Amazon link:https://www.amazon.co.uk/?tag=comicsinmotionpodcast-21UK listener?  30 - Ant-Man and the Wasp Review (2018) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 95:15

Although released in June in US, the Ant-Man and the Wasp movie has just hit the cinema in UK and later in some other parts of the world. Being the first MCU movie since Avengers: Infinity War and fans were thirsting to see how much this would tie in and progress what we know. Like the first movie, which surprised a lot of people though, this movie is connected to the wider MCU but can also be enjoyed as a stand-alone. In our comics background we focus on the Wasp, and in particular Janet Van-Dyne, and take a look into the movie background. Some movie details: IMDB rating: 7.4 Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 80% There are SPOILERS!  29 - Ant-Man Review (2015) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 94:25

This 2015 movie brought about the close of Marvel's Phase Two and introduced Ant-Man to the Universe. In fact, not one but two of them! The marketing build up for this movie was more quiet than some of the other movies in the MCU and rumoured production issues along with a change of Director meant that expectations weren't as high as we may expect. And although late to the MCU party, Ant-Man was one of the first movies Stan Lee had seriously pitched, only to be derailed with the release of Honey I Shrunk the Kids.In the comics, Hank Pym actually appeared with his shrinking formula in a short story in Tales to Astonish #27 and was created by Stan Lee, Larry Leiber and Jack Kirby. Later in Tales to Astonish #35, Stan Lee decided to bring him back as a superhero named Ant-Man. After Hank Pym, both Scott Lang and Eric O'Grady have taken the Ant-Man personas, with the former being the main protagonist in this movie. Some movie details: IMDB rating: 7.3 Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 86% There are SPOILERS!  26 - Gregory Suicide - An Interview with Eric Grissom and Will Perkins Bonus Episode | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 64:55

Bonus episode talking to Eric Grissom and Will Perkins about their book Gregory Suicide, published by Dark Horse Comics. It was really interesting to speak to Eric and Will about the inspiration from this science fiction graphic novel, working together and the development process of the book. As always we break off into a few tangents and have a few laughs and lot of fun talking to these talented and great guys. Both Chris and I really enjoyed this book and is a great self-contained science fiction thriller, with an epic feeling of a much bigger world. Gregory Suicide Summary: An obsolete A.I. program known as Gregory wakes in an unfamiliar world and is haunted by the memories of his past lives, each ending in death by his own hand. On the path to discovering the truth about himself, Gregory slips into the trenches of two opposing forces: the deadly A.I. who replaced him and a group of humans who want to destroy him and all his kind. In the end, Gregory must choose a side in the coming revolution and the key to everything may lie in the strange visions he has between life and death. Set in a dystopian future, the thought-provoking science fiction explored in the the book's 144 pages brings to mind the likes of Blade Runner, Looper, and Westworld. Rather than merely relying on genre tropes, Gregory Suicide uses the vivid aesthetic as a backdrop to a universal story about human struggle. You can order directly through Eric or Will's sites, or Amazon: Eric: http://www.ericgrissom.com Will: https://www.willperkinscomics.com Amazon: https://amzn.to/2LbUtpR You could also get a free prologue and view the trailer on: http://www.gregorysuicide.com.  Also you can check out Eric's excellent Old Doctor Who Show Podcast on https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/doctor-who-the-old-doctor-who-show/id955834332?mt=2. UK listener?  25 - Weird Science Review (1985) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 78:56

In the 1980's, John Hughes was a 'coming-of-age' movie making machine! The Writer/Director was head of 80's classics like the National Lampoon series, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Pretty in Pink. As well as the legendary Planes, Trains and Automobiles among others. After Joel Silver acquired the rights to the 1950's Weird Science comic, published by EC Comics, he took the idea from the story "Made of the Future" and ran with it. Although the inspiration for the movie is loosely based on the comics, it bares little resemblance in terms of storyline but merely the essence of creating your own companion. Some movie details: IMDB rating: 6.6 Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 69% There are SPOILERS! So if you haven't seen the movie, please go see if and then come back for the review.  UK listener? Jeremy talks to us about the book as well as the journey to bring the story to the shelves. The story tackles some tough issues and we both found it fascinating to understand Jeremy's inspiration, research and perseverance with this and other stories. Skip to the End: Skip to the End tells Jonny’s story as he tries to cope with his bandmate and best friend Kirk’s suicide. Twenty years later, Jonny struggles with heroin addiction, lost in the songs they created and desperate to relive the past—until one day he discovers he can.  23 - Judge Dredd Review (1995) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 86:08

The 1995 Judge Dredd movie starring Sylvester Stallone was the winner from our social media vote and so that was our review for this week. The source material tackles some hard issues about what could happen with a facist state and if individuals are granted too much power. And when the movie started production they could either approach this by asking some hard questions keeping with an R-rating feel. Or, they could do a an action-comedy, Tango and Cash with Rob Schneider. take. See which side of the coin we think this fell on. Some movie details: IMDB rating: 5.5 Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 30% There are SPOILERS! So if you haven't seen the movie, please go see if and then come back for the review.  UK listener?  22 - Kick-Ass Review (2010) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 95:51

Well, we've all done it haven't we? Wondered about why no one has ever decided to become a real-life superhero to fight crime and help people? No? Well, after reading Batman: Year One, and young Mark Millar and friends were wondering this and years later he created his character and story, Kick-Ass, to explore what might happen if someone did. Despite the fact the comic book only hit the shelves in 2008, the movie rights were snapped up quickly and brought to the screen by Matthew Vaughn and Jane Goldman, who we've discussed previously with Kingsman. The violent nature of the movie, couple with some colourful language from a young Chloë Grace Moretz, led to some negative reviews, but generally was a critical and commercial success. But what did our hosts make of it? Some movie details: IMDB rating: 7.6 Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 81% There are SPOILERS!  21 - Batman Begins (2005) Review | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 128:20

The first step in the Christopher Nolan trilogy is our featured review for this week; Batman Begins, released in 2005. We're delighted to have Jamie Selice on the show to also give her thoughts on the movie. Jamie is the author of screenplay Nightwing and Batgirl: Year One and has been a big fan of the Bat Family after being introduced through the Nolan movies. Please give the screenplay a read on: https://www.fanfiction.net/s/12339942/1/Nightwing-and-Batgirl-Year-One and you can also follow Jamie on https://twitter.com/jdimaria124. Batman Begins was a much darker and more grounded take on the Batman character than had been seen in the previous decade. Key comic stories which influenced the story are Batman: Year One (1987), The Man Who Falls (1989) and The Long Halloween (1996-1997). Batman: Year One was written by Frank Miller and art by David Mazzucchelli, and is generally regarded as one of the best graphic novels of all time. The story looks at his early days as a costumed vigilante and how he develops, makes mistakes and grows. The Man Who Falls (1989) was created by Dennis O'Neil and Dick Giordano, and sees young Bruce fall down a hole and then later leaves Gotham to develop his martial arts and forensic skills. And the Long Halloween, written by Jeph Loeb and art by Tim Sale, also explores Batman's early days of crime fighting. Some movie details: IMDB rating: 8.3 Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 94% There are SPOILERS!  18 - X-Men Review (2000) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 145:45

The year 2000 brought about the landmark movie, X-Men by 20th Century Fox. The movie had been in development as early as 1984, but had started to become a reality when Director Brian Singer was brought on board in 1996. The movie received critical praise and was also a commercial success, and demonstrated to the studios that comic team movies could actually work. The X-Men were created by Stan Lee and Jack Kriby, and first appeared in X-Men #1 in 1963. Lee had come up with the idea that his heroes didn't have to be created by some sort of accident, they could just be born that way as mutants. And as they had some "Extra" abilities and powers, that's what he'd call them - "X-Men". The book sales lagged behind Marvel's other titles and so after issue #66, they had started to reprint material. It wasn't until the revamped and much more diverse team was introduced in Giant Size X-Men #1 that the book started to grow in popularity. The introduction of creative team Chris Claremont and John Byrne also had a key influence in growing the book and developing the characters and their interactions. Some movie details: IMDB rating: 7.4 Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score: 83% Director: Bryan Singer Writer(s): Tom DeSanto, Bryan Singer, David Hayter There are SPOILERS! So if you haven't seen the movie, please go see if and then come back for the review.  Email the show at ComicsInMotionPodcast@gmail.com or tweet us at https://www.twitter.com/ComicsInMotionP. #x-men #marvel #podernfamily

 17 - Solo: A Star Wars Story | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 129:22

Of all the highly anticipated Star Wars movies to come out in this wave, Solo: A Star Wars story probably hasn’t come with the same level of hype as the others. But what did our hosts make of this exploration into our lovable rogue’s backstory?Star Wars comics were first produced by Marvel back in 1977 and the first 6 issues were an adaptation of the first Star Wars movie. The comics were adapted from an earlier version of the screen play and the first few issues came out before the movie. The run lasted 9 years, from 1977 to 1986 and produced many stories that expanded on the original story, along with adapting Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. There are SPOILERS! So if you haven't seen the movie, please go see if and then come back for the review.  Email the show at ComicsInMotionPodcast@gmail.com or tweet us at https://www.twitter.com/ComicsInMotionP. #starwars #hansolo #podernfamily
