Episode 119: Louis Armstrong Schools on Hotter Than That | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:05

This week we are talking about and studying one of the true architects of jazz as we know it. Louis Armstrong basically started it all. We are studying an excerpt from his transcription on Hotter Than That. Louis teaches us a lot in these few short bars. What can we do to make one chord sound great over a longer period of time? What do we do when we are not using a million chord substitutions and not playing bebop? All of these questions and more will be answered in this week's episode so tune in and get your PDF ready, because we are going to learn a lot this week!  Episode 118: Blues In 4 Keys Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:12

This week we continue with our series about playing the blues in multiple keys at once. In this episode we change from learning a simple melody in minor thirds, to actually improvising. I have included a simple way for you to quickly wrap your own ear and the listener's ear to the new key and make it clear what we are doing. By quickly arpeggiating the first chord of the new key, we make it very clear that there is a shift happening. Remember that this material is a little bit on the advanced side of things. If you aren't ready fort this stuff, just file it away as an episode to come back to at some point. Enjoy the episode and soon you will be a monster player in any key!  Episode 117: Blues In 4 Keys | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:05

This week's episode is a little bit on the advanced side of things. We are going to learn how to quickly tonisize new keys and really be on top of our game in terms of thinking on our feet. This was an exercise that one of my professors in graduate school had me do on a regular basis and it helped me out a lot. This exercise not only will help the brain but will also get you to hear things in a brand new way. By using the relationship of minor thirds we can easily transition between keys without worrying about all 12 at once. The 12 key thing will come later on, but for this week we are just worrying about 4 keys. WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??  Episode 116: Practice Progressions Part 3 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:09

This week we finish up our series on practice progressions with the hardest ones yet. So far in this series, we have talked about progressions that make total sense from a traditional point of view. The problem is, in modern creative music, we can't always count on the progressions to be traditional. We have to be ready for anything that's thrown our way. These two progressions aren't the most complicated but also don't follow any type of circle of fourths or fifths motion. I think this will really open up your playing. Also, this week we start throwing mp3 playalongs into the mix! Hop on over to Patreon to get your download of all the practice progressions that you can play along with!  Episode 115: Practice Progressions Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:59

This week we continue our work on practice progressions. The only difference between this week and last is now we are dealing with V-I progressions instead of a mono-quality exercise. These progressions are sure to open up your playing if you spend enough time on them. Another difference between this week and last is that I want you to shoot for playing a particular sound over each V chord instead of playing a piece of prescribed vocabulary. This will force you into a different frame of mind and might open up a little bit more creativity from your playing. Enjoy the episode and have fun! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??  Episode 114: Practice Progressions Part 1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:32

This week starts a series on something that I use in my practice each and every day. These progressions are how I get ideas into my playing and functioning as I'd like them to. Whether you're learning vocabulary or trying to get a certain sound into your playing, these examples will be extremely valuable additions into your toolbox. This week we start with simple, mono-quality chord progressions that have us looking at either major, dominant, or minor chords. I have also given you a piece of vocabulary to test yourself on towards the end of the episode. I hope you enjoy this show! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??  Episode 113: Charlie Parker’s Iconic Line On Confirmation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 12:41

We all know that Charlie Parker is the father of modern jazz. The advancements he made in such a short life are nothing short of amazing. He changed the face of music and transcended what was possible on his instrument. Almost every legendary jazz musician attributes Bird as being one of their main influences. This warrants deep study of his music and this is what we are going to do today. There is one line on Confirmation that has always stood out to me as being a very important piece of language. The line comes on his second chorus of solo as the bridge starts. A wonderful combination of clarity and harmonic genius ensues. Enjoy today's episode and really study this line if you want to understand some of the things that make Bird so great. WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??  Episode 112: Traditional Versus Modern | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:19

This week we answer a question and build an episode around an email from one of our listeners, David. David wants to know the difference between getting more of a traditional sound (think NOLA style or the 1920's) and a more modern, bebop oriented sound. This was a really fun topic and we explore it using a timeless jazz standard. I have written two short segments of what I consider to be completely different styles. I think you'll gain something from this episode no matter what type of sound you're going for. Enjoy! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??
