The Bklyn Combine has been on an unexpected hiatus for the past 3 months due to The Corona Virus pandemic however, we have come together to explore topics like: White Supremacy, protesting, Black Lives Matter, police brutality, social distancing, and more. This week we sit down again with Bklyn Combine sister, PNC, disruptor, principal, and author, Dr. Nadia Lopez to get some perspective on what it feels like 10 years after opening a school in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. Dr. Lopez started Mott Hall Bridges Academy middle school in 2010 and has since done everything from a TED Talk about starting a school to close a prison, to creating a hair festival at her school in an effort to address issues of self esteem. We had the pleasure of interviewing Emmy Yatich, Nairobi-native and colleague of Combine family member, Jungwon Kim. They both work with the Rainforest Alliance, an international non-governmental organization based in New York City and Amsterdam, with offices throughout the world and operations in more than 60 countries. Its main work is the provision of an environmental certification on sustainable forestry and agriculture and tourism. Emmy Yatich is Communication Associate and works with the Empowering Rural Communities with Renewable Energy (ERCHRE) project funded by IKEA foundation and implemented by Rainforest Alliance an international, non-governmental organization working at the intersection of business, agriculture, and forests to make responsible business the new normal. Jungwon Kim leads a team of seven talented colleagues—writers, graphic designers, video producers, and social media managers—in storytelling to convey the Rainforest Alliance's mission impact. This week we spoke to incredible trial attorney and founder of the Brooklyn to Alaska program Sam Gregory as well as his colleague Luis Hernandez. This week was about narrative. Brooklyn to Alaska is a nonprofit with a mission to bring urban youth to the wilderness of Alaska to teach them life skills and much more. In this week's episode we discuss the prospect of war and many of the conditions that make it a not-so-appealing option for people of color. Way too many young, black men all over this country choose the military over almost any other option based on access and exposure. We get into some dialogue about conflict and the untimely loss of our beloved brother and Brooklyn Mayor, George T. Harris. A street wear expert, chess instructor, and youth advocate, among a host of other specialties; George was a pillar in our community and an encouraging ray of light for all who he came in contact with.
