Episode 8 of the Utah Lacrosse Podcast features the Jac Coyne who is the Director of External Affairs for the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA). Coyne is in his third year in that role, where he is tasked with publicizing the association and helping to run much of its day-to-day operations. Coyne, a native of Wellesley, Mass., worked for US Lacrosse for 15 years as a writer for Lacrosse Magazine and an editor of its website. Prior to that he was a newspaper reporter and sports information director. He, his wife Kimberly and five children reside in La Crosse, Wis. Coyne and I met back in 2010 when my brother and I went to Denver for the 2010 MCLA National Tournament. He showed me the ropes and I couldn’t be more grateful for it! We kept in touch and he helped me land a job with Lacrosse Magazine so needless to say I was thrilled when he was hired by the league. Episode 7 of the Utah Lacrosse Podcast features sophomore defenseman and captain, Seth Neeleman. Seth and I talk about balancing life, school, and lacrosse, the current team, being a captain, lacrosse in the West, and more! This picture comes from the Boise State game last Saturday. This is proof that Seth is a groundball machine. He’s constantly running all over the field, taking the ball away, scooping up loose balls and is very effective in the clear. He’s a captain because he cares. He cares about his teammates, he cares about his academics and he cares about his family.  Utah Lacrosse Podcast – Episode 005: Senior Midfielder & Captain Gus Colonna | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 38:22

Episode 5 of the Utah Lacrosse Podcast features senior midfielder and captain, Gus Colonna. Gus and I talk about the current team, being a captain, growing up in Massachusetts and more. I snapped this pic of Gus during a timeout at the Cal Poly game a few weeks ago. I love his focus on what Coach Marcus Holman is drawing up. It also shows he was the first one in the huddle since he’s right up front. That’s how Gus is, always in the front, always focused, always listening, always learning. Episode 4 of the Utah Lacrosse Podcast features assistant coach Will Manny. Coach Manny and I talk about the Utes first three games, his lacrosse background and history, lacrosse expansion in the West, recruiting tips and tricks and more. This is Gus Colonna and Coach Manny from the Westminster game last year. Will is always teaching and finding ways to get the most out of all the players he coaches. His knowledge of the game is vast and I think you’ll hear that in the podcast. He and Gus have a special relationship as well, which you can find out more about late in the show. Coach Manny is also the most fashionable on the team, so if you’re looking for advice on what to wear, look no further.  Utah Lacrosse Podcast – Episode 003: Assistant Coach Marcus Holman | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:59

Episode 3 of the Utah Lacrosse Podcast features assistant coach Marcus Holman. We dive into the upcoming games, the current team, coaching with best friends and father, Team USA and more.   The picture I chose for this episode is one of my favorites from last year. It shows Marcus with a board drawing up a play for the offense. I like how all the attention is focused right towards the middle, right towards Marcus. I think it’s a good example of the respect the players have for Coach Holman. When Marcus speaks, everyone listens. Also of note, Marcus is always the first to get a touch before practice and the last to get a touch after practice.  Utah Lacrosse Podcast – Episode 002: Utah Assistant Coach Adam Ghitelman | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Episode 2 of the Utah Lacrosse Podcast features assistant coach Adam Ghitelman. Coach ‘Ghits’ is the mastermind behind the defense for the Utes and the wizard with the goalies. Join me as I talk to Coach Ghitelman about the upcoming season, the impact of the returning Ute poles and goalies, defensive schemes, lacrosse in developing countries, growing the game and more. The picture I choose for this episode is of Coach Ghits catching air after last years goalie goal by Quinton Swinney. I had spoken with ‘Q’ before the game and he said, ‘Watch out for a full field goal. We’ve seen the tape and we think we can get it.’ Sure enough, Q found the back of the net.  Utah Lacrosse Podcast – Episode 001: Utah Head Coach Brian Holman | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 43:47

I was listening to the Suiting Up podcast with Paul Rabil and he was interviewing the creators of The Lacrosse Network, Samir Chaudry and Colin Rosenblum and they said to those who wanted to create content, ‘Create it right now. You have to make it’. I was listening to another Suiting Up episode where Rabil interviews Gary Vaynerchuk, a famous entrepreneur and investor, and he thought that podcasts were going to continue to trend upward and argued that a podcast is something you can listen to while doing another thing. I was working as he said that so it rang true. With those two insights, I emailed the coaching staff to see what they thought about the idea. They were all in. The story I am going to tell is two-fold. The first aspect is a behind the scenes, insider look into the 2018 Utah Men’s Lacrosse team. We’ll (the listener, me and the guests) will dive into the schedule, roster, opponents, coaching, recruits, etc. I’m going to hope to provide you, the listener, a unique point of view as I spend time with the team. The second aspect will be a broader look into lacrosse in the West, lacrosse in Utah, trends in lacrosse, building a program, NCAA D-I lacrosse, life lessons and more. I’d also like to thank Robert Nelson at the Marriott Library for catching the vision and allowing us to use the student studio in the library. It’s an incredible resource for students. With that said, Jake Melville will be producing each podcast. It only made sense for the first guest to be head coach Brian Holman. You can read his bio here. If you have met or know Coach Holman, then you’ll really enjoy this podcast. If you haven’t met him, I don’t want to say too much so you can form your own opinions. I think he’s great and he’s a great person to listen to. I can only imagine what it’s like to play for him. The image I used with this episode is a true look into the passion he has for lacrosse. This is in front of 200 youth players at a clinic in San Fransisco. He once told me his favorite place is a practice field and I truly believe it. Hope you enjoy the show. — Tim Haslam, Utah Men’s Lacrosse SID Show Notes * 2018 Schedule * 2018 Roster * Suiting Up Podcast with Paul Rabil * The Lacrosse Network Time Stamps * 2:45 – Coach Holman * 3:20 – Tryouts with Tom Schrieber & Scott Ratliff * 6:10 – Fall Ball / San Fransisco Trip to play Scotland & Marquette * 11:45 – 2018 Schedule * 17:00 – Team Goals * 18:43 – Captains * 22:00 – Where we are in the NCAA D-I process * 26:00 – Advantages of being in the MCLA for 2 years * 30:30 – What it’s like coaching with Marcus (son) * 33:30 – Pillars of Utah Lacrosse * 38:45 – Rapid Fire Questions Questions/Comments/Feedback is always welcome: tim@uteslacrosse.com or on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram)
