Ep. 07: Recovery after Ironman or Any Ultra-Endurance Race- With Daniel Barnes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:03

What do I do now? This is a common question asked by many athletes after a big race. With all the hours of training and near obsession that comes with taking on a big goal- once it is over an athlete can feel lost, gloomy, and even struggle with what is termed "post-ironman depression." This feeling can be felt after marathons, ultra-mans, 100 milers... really anything that takes on massive amounts of time, energy and mental focus. Ep. 07 touches on this subject- but centers on how to allow the body to fully recover from the physical, mental and emotional demands of endurance sports. Daniel Barnes, an ultra-endurance athlete is one who has experienced the highs and lows of endurance sports. His racing resume involves UltraMans, Ultra-Marathon trail runs, and Ironman (both half and full). He is well acquainted with what to do and what not to do when it comes to Recovery. I asked him to come on the podcast and share with me some tales of What Not to Do. We discuss different ways the body needs to recover. And what happens when you do not give your body and soul the time it deserves. After talking with Daniel, here is something I have discovered about recovery. (again- everyone is different... find what works for you). Spend time with friends/family and do not talk about the race, training, or how antsy you feel. Listen and be present with them. Journal- Writing out the frustration or the blessings (or both) helps put all in perspective. for a few weeks- do the thing you love. For me, I like strength training with my husband and swimming. The weights make me feel like a bada** and the swimming has a calming effect on my temperament. (I am a mom of 3 kids all  5 and younger... so pray for me) Get real Thankful! If you are able to do endurance sports at all- it means your body is healthy enough to do them, you have a support team who loves you, you are financially stable (somewhat) and you have friends who will stick by you even though you obnoxiously discuss racing strategies and nutrition plans while they could care less!! Honor your body with naps, good hydration, and restful digestion. After a few weeks (3-5.. or so): Set another goal. One that is more thrilling or a little scary to motivate you and get back to training. Who has ran a marathon a few days after killing it in an Ironman??   Who takes a lot of naps now that Ironman training has slowed??

Ep. 77: Elisheva Shwartz: How to Encourage Your "outside the lines" Child and The Dyslexia Advantage | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:35

Elisheva Schwartz is this week's guest on The Mommy Project. We discuss Myths of the Dyslexia, how slow processors vs. quick processors differ in their approach to learning, and most importantly... How can we Encourage our children who may be struggling in school, or seem disinterested in learning. This conversation, as well as listening to Elisheva's podcast The Dyslexia Quest, helped me piece together my own tumultuous school days. From as early as kindergarten, I came to understand I was NOT the smartest, brightest, quickest kid in class. In fact, simple directions seemed to baffle me and I struggled to keep up with my peers. Reading was a grind, mathematics felt like a hopeless abyss, and any quick memory games played in school left me wanting to throw up with nerves and embarrassment. However- I have always known that given enough time (slow processor) and space, I could learn anything. It just might not be on the school systems time table. I knew I was bright... just not in the traditional sense. And SO.... now in my mid- thirties and a professor of English at the university level-- I found recognition in Elisheva's research.  In her own struggle with school and dyslexia- I have found the missing puzzle to my questions about how my own mind works compared to those of my peers. If you have a "outside the lines" sorta kid, or one who resists learning, who may be struggling in the school system.. PLEASE LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE!  Ep. 76: Jeannie Cunnion- "I am significant in my children's lives, But God is Sovereign" | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 51:20

This week's interview is with Jeannie Cunnion, author of books Parenting the Wholehearted Child, Mom Set Free, and the Mom Set Free Bible Study. Jeannie understand the pressures women place on themselves- to be the "perfect" and she suggests another way of seeing the world. Not as a mountain of to-dos and pressures to "get it right," but seeing the Mom, the Woman's life as a way to rely closer He who created us.  We disucuss the "Don't Mom Alone" approach. How we can trust God with our children, and really walk in Freedom from the Pressure to get everything just right, just so, just perfect. Declarations to remember:  "Let Us not forget that part of God's purpose is to produce character in the lives of His children."  "I am significant in my children's lives, But God is Sovereign" "What is Hard for Us- Is NOT Hard for God."  Scriptures mentioned in episode:  John 6:44 Eph. 1:4-5 Heb 12:2 Jer 29:11 Rom. 8:28 Rom. 5:3-5 (just to name a few)  Also- Please read this blog post by Jeannie about the Teen Anxiety Epidemic So Good!  You can find Jeannie on Instagram

Ep. 75: Jamie Ivey- We are More than Our Past- Own the Story and Share it! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 48:50

Wife, Mom of 4, podcaster, writer, speaker- Jamie Ivey is a woman who recognizes the power of stories. This podcast is for anyone who has ever shirked away from their own stories. This is for the girl, the woman, the friend who is still seeing herself as the label placed upon her by past events. This is for the mama who needs the courage to tell her teenager daughter her own story... of how she once made mistakes, and  is afraid of ... the what ifs.... Women struggle with the idea : If They Only Knew, then_________ what?!   Silencing our own struggles not only damages us- it also hides the greatest truth of all - The truth of redemption- of freedom from the shackles of sin and shame. When we own our story- proclaim the name Jesus - we are also proclaiming what He says about us to be true... We are Loved, Redeemed, Renewed and Restored. We do not have to believe the lie.   Jamie and I discuss the various labels women struggle with-- the sin that once held us back, and can sometimes hinder us still.....   Labels such as:   the whore, glutton, gossip, drunk, addict, lier, cheat, flake, weak .... what ever label someone may have placed on you or you placed upon yourself... we are no longer bound. Through sharing our stories- we shed the label, the mistaken identity-- for one bigger than ourselves. His.   Sharing our story brings healing. There are parts of our most inner selves that we do not realize need healing until we call out the past.       There is no one like our God. He is our Healer, our deliverer, He is Love, Truth. He is the Vine and we are his branches.... Stay close to Him and Allow His word to give you a new twist on the old stories.       If You Only Knew:My Unlikely, Unavoidable Story of Becoming Free Book by Jamie Ivey

Ep. 73-New Year's Resolutions: Traveling with Toddlers, Ironman Training, and 8 Hugs a day. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 57:00

Episode 73 begins Season 4 of The Mommy Project. I share some of my past resolutions and how I have failed to even remember the goals I wanted to accomplish, and why resolutions reflect our priorities and stage of life. Why do we make New Year's Resolutions every year? For me- New Year's Resolutions have been a mismatched, un-planned affair... one that lacks strategy, specificity and ends up being unrealized at the end of the year. However- looking back I have seen progress in areas that were not even on the resolutions list. I share of these insights with you today.  My Word for Years past: 2016- Just Love (looking back these words could describe many decisions I made, challenges faced, and this is the year the podcast began. Just Love the (process, the place, the season I am in). 2017- Exuberant - 2017 began in a dark slump, post-partum depression was kicking my butt, sad, frustrated with my creative life, feeling like a terrible mom, However- this year has been a year of God of God showing out. and Its been in the small small moments. It has been a year of friendships, restoration, and progress. 2018- Less- The word Less keeps coming up. I don't even know how this will fully manifest itself this year, but I am looking forward to it. Hopefully- there will be a future episode on this Word of the year. 2018 Goals: Read Bible More- Pray More. (I am still not as specific as I should be in this spiritual goal. Complete training and Finish Strong at Ironman Boulder 2018-- June 10th. The biggest mammoth of a race I have ever done. Save 100$ a month Read and Re-read the books we have at the house. So - doing a slight book purchase fast. Keep on Saying Yes. ---> Don't Let Nerves, Fear of Failure and Anxiety Rule my life 8 hugs a day. Give each kid at least 8 hugs a day.
