The offense couldn’t get anything going against Kyle Gibson who went seven innings and only gave up two hits. Clarke Schmidt pitched okay and was hurt by his defense and some shoddy umpiring causing him to throw more pitches than necessary. Speaking of the umpiring, Aaron Boone has had enough of it and got ejected for the fourth time this season and for the second time in the past two weeks. Is this a problem? We discuss. The New York Yankees blew a 5-1 lead, and a combo of Nestor Cortes, Jimmy Cordero, and Albert Abreu gave up eight runs in the top of the seventh inning to give Baltimore a 9-5 lead, and they’d go on to win the game, 9-6. Stacey and Steve discuss the meltdown inning and wonder how it could have gone so wrong so quickly. The game had some positives, like Gleyber Torres’s two home run performance and IKF’s home run and triple, but the game turned into a clunker thanks to the pitching performances. Aaron Boone said that once Josh Donaldson comes back—he’s starting a rehab assignment this week—he’ll be an everyday player. Stacey and Steve debate whether or not that’s a good idea and discuss how long the Yankees should give Donaldson to acclimate to the team. How long is his leash, so to speak? The New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-2 on Thursday night to win their series three out of four. The star of the series was Aaron Judge (naturally) who hit a first inning home run and nearly hit a second one in the sixth (he missed it by inches. He finished the series 6-14 with four home runs and tonight’s home run was his 32nd against Toronto in his career. Nestor Cortes looked a lot better in this start and he lasted six innings and gave up two runs. The bullpen came in and shut the door and it was an all-around great win for the Yankees. The New York Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays, 3-0 in 10 innings, thanks to a walk-off home run by Danny Jansen. The game was pretty quiet leading up to that moment as both teams’ starters and relievers shut down the offenses for the first nine and a half innings. The New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 7-4 in the opener of a four-game set. And speaking of openers, the Yankees used one on Monday night! Jimmy Cordero who opened for Johnny Brito, Cordero pitched two perfect innings and Brito pitched five and ont-third innings before running into trouble in the eighth inning but that was partly because of a Gleyber Torres error. On the offensive side Aaron Judge had a big night and we discuss that. Is he back? It sure does seem like it. The Yankees offense had a good night against Blue Jays starter Alek Manoah who issued a career-high seven walks in his four innings of work. Then as we teased on Monday’s show, we’re talking about Mariano Rivera’s comments about Clay Holmes and his role as the Yankees’ closer. Ultimately they would split the four-game set but there were a lot of things to be happy about and some things to be confused about. The Anthonys, Rizzo and Volpe had nice offensive performances, as did Aaron Judge. Wandy Peralta can be called upon to close two games in a row. Then you have Gerrit Cole grinding through his start on Friday night, and Nestor Cortes imploding on Saturday but the Yankees still winning those games thanks to the explosive offense. On Sunday, a questionable bullpen decision bit the Yankees and they dropped another close one. Plus, it’s Minors Monday or what we like to call Andres Chapparo Monday. The New York Yankees lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 8-2 on Thursday night in the first game of a four-game set. Stacey and Steve discuss the game’s performances. Domingo Germán pitched well enough but the offense couldn’t get anything going against Drew Rasmussen and then the Yankees bullpen blew up and the Rays ran away with it just like they’re running away with the AL East. The New York Yankees completed the sweep against the Oakland A’s on Wednesday. The bats have come alive and just in time for their series against the Tampa Bay Rays which begins Thursday night at the Stadium. The New York Yankees were powered by a couple of unexpected hitters in their 7-2 victory over the Oakland A’s on Monday night; Oswaldo Cabrera, who hadn’t hit a home run since April 21, and Aaron Hicks, who hadn’t hit a home run since September 2022. DJ LeMahieu and Gleyber Torres also went deep in a ‘must win’ game (and series, let’s be real) for the Yankees in a game against old friend JP Sears. Nestor Cortes lasted five innings and had a better start than his last outing and the bullpen did nice job closing things out.
