sunshine + oranges
Summary: Our story is simple: we homeschool with Christ as our foundation and are reminded of the gifts he has already given us. When you're discouraged in life, take a detour toward joy and look at the sunshine and the oranges and remember how the Lord is so good to give us the warmth and sweetness of life - even in the mundane. Reheat that coffee, get in the car (they're strapped in! Yay!), and let's talk!Amy is a homeschooling mama, Christ-following, mama of 5 (four at home) and married for over 15 years to a bearded, former military man. Our life has been an adventure but God has a story weaved in and out of it just like He does with yours. Join me as we talk about just about anything from toddlers to teenagers, friendship during the mom years, homeschooling, and wife-ing.iTunes Link:https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/sunshine-orang...Add via RSS link: https://justcast.herokuapp.com/shows/amy-atkins-s...www.sunshineandoranges.comwww.homeschooldownload.com

It is week 12 and hurrah for the midway break! Take some time during the break to enjoy your kiddos, read GREAT books (https://www.sunshineandoranges.com/resources), and review the memory work! History for this week is about the Muslim Empire and Sara talks about how to pray for them. www.30daysofprayer.com Science, Amy talks about plant systems. It is so interesting what plants do to help produce oxygen for the planet!
History this week we dive into an interesting background about persecution in the church, Constantine, and the Byzantine Empire. Science is equally as dazzling because we get to check out all the flower parts and why they are needed. We even talk a bit about plant reproduction. Here is a link to our book lists that you can use to match up for your reading this week: https://www.sunshineandoranges.com/resources
C1 - Episode 9 - Parts of a Plant, Lao-Tzu and Confucious in China
C1 - Episode 10 - Leaf Shapes, Japan
In science today we tie together the Baby Bean experiment to the types of seed plants there are: Monocot or Dicot? Or is it a conifer? For history, we go over some information about the Age of Imperialism in India and the passive resistance movement. Here is a link to some recommended books by week/subject: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vhz817l162hm941/8.18.18%20Cycle%20One%20Book%20Lists%20by%20week%20by%20subject.pdf?dl=0
For science today we discuss the different types of reproduction but not without a disclaimer: I don't go into great detail about conception because this is a personal family choice as to when it is introduced. We recommend listening to the podcast first before having your kiddos hear it (if you do that). Both Sara and I recommend the by-age-appropriate series, God's Design for Sex. History is also another one to be advised of this week: Hindduism and Buddhism. We have talked about learning the pagan gods before and this is no different. We cannot refute that which we do not understand. Learning the different religions of the world will help us to understand early on an appropriate biblical worldview about them. We are praying for you as you enjoy this new season of the year!
History: The Greeks! Specifically, some famous ones including Homer, Archimedes, and more. Science: Vertebrates! What are they are what is a little bit about each one? Today we give you lovely glimpse of invertebrates for science. What are some? What are their special names? What are their characteristics? For history we get to expand upon the Romans and their civilization. They sure paved the way for Western civilization for the way we see it today! Of course, this isn't a deep dive like a giant squid would do but rather we are fishing from the surface. Check out some resources below for more research. How Then Shall We Live? Plant cells! What's the difference between them and animal cells? What are the extra parts? We discuss a brief explanation today which goes along with Classical Conversations week 4 cycle 1 memory work. Then, the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World are discussed by Sara! They are amazing and wondrous indeed! Sources: Pyramid - David Macaulay The Cat of Bubastes - G.A. Cells are the building blocks of living things. Have you ever wondered what makes up a cell? Are there things inside of a cell that helps me move and function? We are discussing Animal Cells today on the podcast for science with Amy. We are designed by our Creator in heaven to worship something. Whether humans have gotten it right or not, we all have this natural desire to be drawn into something or someone to praise and enjoy. Throughout the Bible and history, sadly, people got this way wrong. We talk about some of those Greek and Roman gods in the podcast today with Sara for history. Don't worry, Sara does an excellent job shedding some biblical worldview light on this subject.
