Cassy Joy: Welcome back to the Fed and Fit podcast! I’m thrilled today to have not just one, but two awesome ladies on the show today; Mickey Trescott and Angie Alt. Mickey is an NTP, Angie is an NTC and CHC; {laughs} I’ll tell you what all of that is in just a second. I’m really excited to have them both on. First, I’ll tell you about Mickey. Mickey is a nutritional therapy practitioner; that’s what the NTP stands for; chef, blogger, and author of the Autoimmune Paleo Cookbook. She’s the creator of AIP Batch cook; a video based cooking program that teaches users how to prepare allergen free meals in their own home. Very, very cool stuff. She teaches cooking classes online and at seminars across the country, as well as at Bastyr University; I hope I said that right. I’m an Aggie. {laughs} We’re kind of… Mickey Trescott: Yeah, no, you totally got it. Cassy Joy: I nailed it? Awesome. Sometimes I feel like I’m tucked into my Texas bubble very tightly. Mickey is on the board of directors for Hashimoto’s Awareness, an advocacy organization for suffers of Hashimoto’s disease, and in 2012, Mickey founded Autoimmunepaleo.com; a website with recipes and resources for those suffering from autoimmune diseases. She lives in Willamette Valley, Oregon. Did I say that one right, too, Mickey? Mickey Trescott: Willamette. Close! Cassy Joy: {laughs} Oh man. Did I say it like Siri says it? {laughs} Mickey Trescott: Oh, I think you did better than Siri, actually. Cassy Joy: Awesome. Ok, I’m going to tell you guys about Angie. Angie is a nutritional therapy consultant; that’s what the NTC stands for; and a certified health coach; the CHC. She’s also the author of the Alternative Autoimmune Cookbook, a recipe and guidebook for the autoimmune protocol. She is the creator of SAD and AIP in 6, an online coaching program that has helped over 1000 members on the path to wellness; very cool; teaching them how to transition their diets and lifestyle over a 6-week period. In 2015, Angie became a partner at Autoimmunepaleo.com, and she lives in Washington, D.C. Welcome, Angie! Angie Alt: Thanks! It’s nice to be here. Cassy Joy: Oh, it’s nice to have you girls here. Well I’m going to pass the baton off. Those were really lovely bios, and gave a nice introduction, but I would love it if y’all could share a little bit more about your stories, and about this latest project that you girls are working on. Mickey Trescott: Yeah, so Mickey here, I’ll go first. And you know, my journey really started like a lot of us who come to paleo, come to all these health modifications, diet modifications, the autoimmune protocol, with a personal health issue. So I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and Celiac disease about 5 years ago now after suffering for about a year, which in the scheme of things isn’t very long; but it was a pretty bad year.

Mills. He’s an acclaimed chiropractor, and the creator of the Full Body Fix. Cassy Joy: On today’s show, I’m so excited to welcome my friend Dr. Scott Mills to the show. He is a chiropractor with the passion for empowering others with the knowledge and tools needed to eliminate pain and improve the way they move. He’s located in San Francisco, California with his wife, and another dear friend of mine, Diane Sanfilippo, of Balanced Bites and Practical Paleo; a couple of things you may have heard of. {laughs} Dr. Scott Mills: {laughs} Cassy Joy: In addition to his doctor of chiropractic degree, he also holds a Master’s in exercise science, and previously worked as a collegiate certified athletic trainer for 6 years prior to his chiropractic career. In addition to patient care, he created the Full Body Fix, which is a series of corrective exercise video protocols designed to equip people with proper home care techniques. Really, really cool stuff. Dr. Scott’s spare time is typically filled with the active endeavors, such as weight training, golf, and mountain biking as well as exploring the Bay area with his sweet, sweet dog, Harper. Dr. Scott Mills: {laughs} Cassy Joy: I’m so excited to have him on the show today. I’ve got some really fun questions lined up. Thanks for coming on, Scott! Dr. Scott Mills: Thanks so much for having me, Cassy. It was great being able to hang out with you back on the PP/Fed and Fit tour here in the Pacific Northwest. There were a few stops I got to come with you guys. You added a lot of joy and energy to the trip; I know Diane was super happy to have you on that tour. Cassy Joy: Oh my gosh. It was such a pleasure; and you were such a life saver. Scott is a true gentleman, he really is, and he drove us all over the Pacific Northwest; unloaded our bags and reloaded our bags. {laughs} Dr. Scott Mills: It was fun. It was fun. Happy to do it. Cassy Joy: Oh you're the best. And he makes the best poached eggs in the entire world. Dr. Scott Mills: {laughs} Cassy Joy: So I know there’s a video somewhere; I don’t know, I think it’s on Diane’s site, http://balancedbites.com. Dr. Scott Mills: Yeah. Cassy Joy: If you want to learn how to make a poached egg, that’s where to go. Because I’ve tried; I have a cookbook out and I still don’t feel like I’ve got it mastered! {laughs} Dr. Scott Mills: {laughs} Well that’s high praise. And all it takes is 2 eggs a day for like 6 months, and you get really good at it. {laughs} Cassy Joy: Oh, that’s it. {laughs} Sounds good. Oh man. Ok, well I really; your career. We got to chat a little bit about what you do and the Full Body Fix really seems like an incredibly valuable program, but I’d like to kind of talk about your work in general. You know, 30,000 foot view; chiropractic care really seems to be the root of where you focus. A lot of listeners here; maybe it’s new to some, and maybe they’ve just heard rumors about chiropractic care. Dr. Scott Mills: Yeah. Cassy Joy: Because there’s a lot of things that...

Ep. 76: The (Power of the) Benefit of the Doubt | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 27:09

On today’s show, I talk about the power of plenty and of giving the benefit of the doubt to yourself, your business, your relationships, and your health. We're back with our 76th episode of the Fed+Fit Podcast! Remember to check back every Monday for a new episode and be sure to subscribe on iTunes! Find us HERE on iTunes and be sure to "subscribe." Episode 76 Transcription On today’s episode, we’re talking about the power of plenty, and giving the benefit of the doubt. Cassy Joy: And we’re back with another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I’m so excited to be back with you guys today; I am going rogue with today’s episode. I had a wonderful time these last three weeks on the book tour with Diane, and I’ve learned the power of just kind of going with the flow, and not everything has to be the perfect setup. So I’m talking to you guys from my back patio here in not so sunny San Antonio because it’s raining right now. Which is nice; I love the rain. So I figured it would be a great spot to talk about what we are going to talk about today. So this thought occurred to me, really last night. I’m recording this episode a day after when I would have wanted to, but I promised my friends, namely Diane Sanfilippo and Juli Bauer that I would take a full day off. We were joking that; not so joking. They really both of them sat down and had heart to hearts with me and told me; they said, “Cassy, I know you don’t take time off, but you must. You must take at least one day off.” {laughs} Diane and I joke that we’re the kind of people that are either completely on or completely off, it’s hard for me to just be moderately on. It’s hard for me to just lightly check emails, but still kind of relax. So I did, I took the whole day off, and now we’re back on Monday and I’m excited. I am refreshed, and I’ve been sleeping a lot, getting caught up. But it was a whirlwind of a book tour, a lot of fun, and the time off yesterday I think is the reason why today’s podcast episode came to me. Once you really quiet the mind and give yourself some mental whitespace, which I talk about; I talked about a lot actually on our book tour in my talk about the Fed and Fit Project. But mental white space is a really significant thing, because it allows then your mind to kind of quiet and fill in with maybe more meaningful and more significant ideas. So an idea that came to me yesterday, and it’s something that I’ve thought about a lot. And it’s a distinguishing factor I think in how some folks approach life, but I just never really had the words to put on it, and they came to me yesterday. So I want to talk about the benefit of the doubt. And I don’t know how long this podcast is going to last; I don’t know how long it’s going to take. Because what I normally do, so you guys know, when I write a show, when it’s just myself, I will draft out show notes and it’s not necessarily a script but I’ll write down the bullet points of what I want to talk about just to jog my memory while I’m going through the show. And it also helps me know how long; because I kind of have an idea how many words on a page converts into time on a show. So I don’t really know what today’s going to be like; I’ve got it just jotted down on a post it note; which is kind of fun. But it goes with the theme of the show; giving myself the benefit of the doubt that we can just figure it out. You can jump and life will be ok. You’ll figure it out. So this is just a very small example on a very large concept. So, really the question is; what would the world look like if everybody gave the benefit of the doubt instead of just doubting? This is an important distinction, because I think that; I don’t know. I’m not going to pretend to know if we’re hard wired to doubt,

Episode 75 Transcription On today’s show, Diane Sanfilippo joins me while we’re riding around in an Uber mid book tour to talk about how to travel with less stress. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast! This is a unique recording {laughs} but you’ve got to do what it takes when you're on the road. Diane and I are sitting here in the backseat of our wonderful Uber driver’s car in Chicago; we just landed! Diane Sanfilippo: Yes we are. In some beautiful rush hour traffic. Cassy Joy: {laughs} I think we’ve got a little ways before we get to our destination, so we figured we’d dial in, and now that we’re two weeks into this three week-long book signing tour, Diane for Practical Paleo second edition, which you can get in a hardcover or paperback; though we recommend the hardcover. Diane Sanfilippo: We do. Cassy Joy: {laughing} Pro tip; get the hardcover. {laughs} Diane Sanfilippo: It travels better. Cassy Joy: It travels better, exactly. And then me, for my Fed and Fit book. So we’re really excited; we have a signing in Skokie today when this episode airs on Tuesday. And yeah, so it’s been a really fun trip. But a couple of weeks on the road, and you get pretty good at figuring out how to make travel less stressful. So that’s what we want to talk to you guys about today, is really how to make travel less stressful. There are some tips and tricks; Diane is definitely a seasoned veteran, and I’ve been a very coachable student. {laughs} in a lot of these tips, and it really has made a huge difference, some of these things we’re going to talk about today. Both general travel tips, and then also with regard to food and overall health. So let’s go ahead and get into it! Alright. So our general tips to start off; first one we talk about is take Uber. Diane Sanfilippo: Take Uber. Yeah. So a lot of times when you travel, you can rent a car and this is not sponsored, by the way. Cassy Joy: No {laughs}. Diane Sanfilippo: You can rent a car, but first of all sometimes renting a car is totally affordable, but sometimes it’s crazy expensive. It can be over $100 a day to rent a car, and if you just take an Uber a few times a day, you probably won’t spend that much. And also, I don’t know about everybody else, but if I get in a car in a new city, I don’t have my little holder for my phone in the car, and I’m trying to map around and just drive around and navigate the traffic and all of that; and it’s just so much easier to just go sit in a car, and someone else is going to drive, and you can check your map and see where you’re going and figure things out. So, I love to just leave that to somebody else. Basically; oh, that’s my phone. Basically, you’re delegating. You’re delegating the driving, you know? Cassy Joy: That’s true. I mean, it really is the concept; one way to destress in general is to delegate more tasks. Plus,

Welcome back to the Fed and Fit podcast. I’m so excited to have you here today. If you are a new listener, or you do not follow me on social media or anywhere on my blog, then you may not know that I am actually smack in the middle of the first leg for my nationwide book signing tour for my debut printed book, Fed and Fit! It’s so exciting and humbling, and even in just recording this show, my voice feels a little raw, so I think I’m going to have some tea later tonight to kind of help soothe that. But man, it has been just so great. So much fun. I’m having the time of my life, mostly because I get to see you guys face to face! You know, I try to do my best, if you guys email me or you send me a note on social media. I always do my best to respond because I think that’s really important. There’s nothing worse than sending something out into the universe and it going unanswered! So I feel like we’ve made friendships over the years through the internet, and it’s really great to put faces to names. So thank you for coming out to these events; thank you for all of your awesome questions, and for letting me signs your books! {laughs} It’s been so much fun. And really, ultimately, thank you for letting me be a part of your story. It’s an honor. I’m on tour with my travel partner, Diane Sanfilippo, who just published the second edition of Practical Paleo. And it is just a wonderful resource. Diane and I are having an awesome time touring together. You can kind of get an idea in our talks; we kind of put on, since both of us are certified nutrition consultants, we put on sort of a little mini nutrition seminar. So if that’s something that interests you, this is essentially a way to come out and take advantage of that. Grab a couple of books; maybe one for yourself, maybe one for a friend. Support the bookstores that are hosting us; get them signed. They make great gifts and great holiday presents. Let’s see; I’m looking at the schedule really quickly so I can tell you guys where we’re coming up next. Let’s see, Monday when this podcast airs, the 13th, oh goodness not Monday. {laughs} my days; oh man. I’m in San Francisco right now, and earlier today, I was telling some friends that I stayed on a houseboat here once upon a time for my sister’s graduation; and they were like, oh from what school? And I said Seattle University {laughs}. I thought I was in Seattle and I was in San Francisco. Anyways, bear with me. Ok, so we’re going to be at the Desert Ridge Barnes and Noble in Phoenix on the 13th from 7 to 9 p.m., so that’s one option if you’re in Phoenix, Arizona. And that stop is actually going to be myself, Diane, and Juli Bauer, of PaleOMG is going to be joining us. Then we’re going to be at the Half Priced Books in Kansas City from 7 to 9 p.m. on the 15th of September, and actually it will be myself,

Picnik began in 2013 as a food trailer housed in a repurposed shipping container off South Lamar in Austin, Texas. Naomi has a personal history of combating food allergies since childhood, which has led her journey to open the gluten-free food trailer known for the grab and go breakfasts and lunch items, as well as the buttered coffees, which I’ve consumed many of {laughs}. Naomi Seifter: {laughs} Cassy Joy: Bone broths, juices, and all with the focus on sourcing locally and using organic ingredients. Naomi Seifter: It is a lot. It’s a lot. I mean, we get approached by people all the time who are like; oh, I really want to create my own concept, I’m interested in doing something similar. Naomi Seifter: Well thanks! Cassy Joy: Keep it up. And I’d love for you to share; before we jump in I want to talk a lot about Picnik and pick your brain on all things foodie wise; but tell us a little bit more about your story. I very briefly touched on it, but I’d love to know what led you to this lifestyle and to doing what you’re doing now. Naomi Seifter: Yeah, absolutely. So you know,

Ep. 72: Alcohol and Working Out | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 22:20

On today’s show, we’re talking about Alcohol and working out: how last night’s cocktail can affect today’s workout, how a post-workout drink can impact how you benefit from your gym efforts, drinks that are easier on the body, and best practices if you ARE going to balance alcohol consumption with your fitness plan. We're back with our 72nd episode of the Fed+Fit Podcast! Remember to check back every Monday for a new episode and be sure to subscribe on iTunes! Find us HERE on iTunes and be sure to "subscribe." Episode 72 Transcription On today’s show, we’re talking about alcohol and working out. How last night’s cocktail can affect today’s workout; how a post workout drink can have an impact on how you may benefit or not benefit from your gym efforts; drinks that are a little bit easier on the body, and best practices if you are going to balance alcohol consumption with your fitness plan. Cassy Joy: Welcome back to the Fed and Fit podcast! I’m excited about today’s episode. This is an episode topic I’ve actually had jotted down in my scrolling iPhone notepad for months and months now, and I’m glad we’re getting to it. We’re going to talk today about alcohol and working out. Really, how does alcohol affect the body; how does last night’s drink have an effect on today’s workout, and then if you are going to, if you do choose to have some adult beverages in and around your workout, what are maybe some best practices that maybe will keep your cocktails from sabotaging some of your efforts in the gym. So I’m excited about today’s episode; I hope you find it interesting. When I asked you guys; I asked on Snapchat, I think I had four podcast topics in my queue that I was getting ready to research, and this was an overwhelming number of you voted for this episode. So I’m excited about it, and I hope you really enjoy today’s show. I’m going to try and keep it pretty short and sweet, and I’m going to try not to get too sciencey, because I don’t want to lose anybody. We’re just going to talk about really general, I’ve done a bunch of research and I’ve tried to pull out, skim off, you know, the cream off the top and really give you some best practices and some very basic science. So, let’s jump into it! First, let’s talk about alcohol. If you just topped off of a, I don’t know, maybe you’re a caveman. What movie was that? I wish there was someone here that I could ask, where the guy was buried in the ice. The caveman; I used to love that movie! {Encino Man} And he came into the modern world, and all of it was new. So let’s say if you’re that guy; what the heck is alcohol? Alcohol, or ETOH is a substance usually found in various volumes in adult beverages. So when you look on a bottle of wine or on a bottle of beer, it will say alcohol by volume. So that’s what we’re talking about. Most of it, when consumed, is absorbed by the stomach and the rest is absorbed through the small intestine. And then it makes its way around the body, causing all of those funny, loose feelings, while the liver works furiously to metabolize, or deconstruct the alcohol brought to it by the blood stream. Ok, so that’s kind of the basic overview of how alcohol works in the body. If you want more information on alcohol, and you know, how it’s made; we get into a little bit more of the science weeds, you should definitely look up alcohol 101 episode, on this podcast, it was episode number 21 if you want to scroll back through the archives. Ok, let’s start with the first, most pertinent question that we’re all wondering. How does last night’s drink affect today’s workout? So this is a great question, and in all of this I want you guys to understand that I’m not trying to be preachy, by any means. I definitely enjoy a couple of cocktails a week,

Diane Sanfilippo: Hello! {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughs} Diane Sanfilippo: Thanks for having me. I like that I can see you, because you’re giving a little “ole dance” to my welcome. Cassy Joy: {laughing} I do, it’s Oprah style and nobody can ever really see it. Diane Sanfilippo: {laughs} That’s awesome. Yeah, I’m excited to chat with you. Cassy Joy: Me too! I know that readers; listeners are going to be really excited to hear from you. Just in general, but especially about this new project, this new book that’s coming out. Practical Paleo is really one of the most acclaimed books in paleo, gluten free, etc. I’m going there. I’m giving it all the titles! Diane Sanfilippo: They should see the faces I make; like “oh no!” Cassy Joy: {laughs} Oh, it really has been. But with all things, content evolves, and you’re getting ready to release the new and expanded version of Practical Paleo. I would love to hear from you; what differences are you most excited about to really share with the world? Diane Sanfilippo: Ok, so I’m going to start with the superficial stuff, just because I’m holding my first copy right now, and first and foremost because this is what everyone will see when they first look at the book, is that we’re releasing it in a hard cover as well as a soft cover. So, for the people who’ve had the book for a long time, they’re like, “Yes! Finally!” Cassy Joy: {laughs} Diane Sanfilippo: And I’m like, yes! But you know, a lot of people use it as a reference. As you know, only about a third or a little more than a third of the book is recipes, which is still a ton of recipes. It’s over 150 recipes now, which is a lot more than I had before. But you’re flipping through it constantly, it kind of reads and works like a textbook, so the soft cover is fine, there’s nothing wrong with it. There’s a new soft cover edition as well and it’s $10 less on the cover price, so that’s definitely accessible for a lot of people. But the hardcover just feels really special to me. So that, first and foremost. And then second, the photography in the book; I’ve reshot almost all of ...

And she’s got a lot of energy {laughs} but Kimberly, by the end of the trip; she looked at me and she’s like, “Cassy, you just keep being you, because I don’t understand why you’re so happy when you wake up, but it makes me want to be happy.” Which is great, because Kimberly’s got; I don’t know, she’s like this little shiny; bright shining star, I feel like. Juli Bauer: Gosh, she has so much energy. Cassy Joy: She is. She’s a performer, she can really turn it on. It’s awesome. Juli Bauer: Yeah she can!

On today’s show, I’m interviewing my friend and trusted legal mentor, Kristen Roberts of Trestle Law! Episode 69 Links Trestle Law Episode 69 Transcription On today’s episode, I’m interviewing my friend and trusted legal mentor, Kristen Roberts of Trestle Law. She’s sharing her thoughts on how you can protect your business from the very beginning, when to determine if you need to consult with a lawyer, and what is and what isn’t ok when it comes to sharing digital content. Cassy Joy: And we’re back with another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I’m so excited about today’s interview. We’re talking to one of the most lovely, vivacious, wonderful, smartest gals I know. {laughs} Kristen Roberts: Oh my gosh, I have so much to live up to! {laughs} Cassy Joy: {laughing} Her name is Kristen Roberts. She is the founder and managing attorney of Trestle law. Trestle Law focuses on intellectual property, business and employment services for socially conscious and socially responsible businesses. She is a friend of mine, and also my attorney. {laughs} I’m so excited to say. Kristen, thank you so much for coming on the show today. Kristen Roberts: Thank you so much for having me, Cassy. I’m really excited to be here. It’s going to be a lot of fun today. Cassy Joy: I know. We’re going to have a good time. We’ve got some good questions lined up. Kristen has a wealth of information. I don’t know how much; I’ve talked to her on so many things over the years. I guess we’ve known each other about a year now, haven’t we? Kristen Roberts: Yeah. I feel like we really got to know each other at last PaleoFx, right? Cassy Joy: We did. That’s right. We had great conversations there, and she’s just given me really, really solid advice over the years. She works with a number of my colleagues in the industry; a lot of other bloggers, and then of course her business expands much past that. If you’re a business owner looking for help in the law sector, I highly recommend her. I trust her, and she does amazing work. Anyways, I’m excited to have her on the show today. We’re going to talk about; really, we’re going to zoom in on what to do to protect your business from the beginning, when do you need a lawyer, and then also talk about sharing information in the digital age, kind of as a mini-PSA. In this blogging world, so much information is online. When is it ok to share someone else’s information, when is not ok. And then what you can do to not only protect yourself, but what do you do if your content is borrowed. So I just think those are good grounds to cover. But before we get into all of that, I would love to pass the baton over to Kristen. Tell us a little bit more about yourself, more about your business, and maybe what are some of the favorite parts of your job. Kristen Roberts: Well sure, I don’t mind telling you about my job. Lawyering is, I would say, it’s a lot more just client management and really setting client expectations appropriately and kind of just doing the right thing and being a good person. Because so much of it is relationship development, and that I think is probably just to start at what my favorite part is. I would say that’s probably my favorite part of owning my own law firm, is I get to work with the people I want to work with and that I respect and that I like,...

Cassy Joy: Welcome back to another episode of the Fed and Fit podcast. I’m really excited about today’s episode. We’re really going to start to speak to some of that “Fit” side of the Fed and Fit. I’m really thrilled and honored to have Dave Hunt, president and CEO of Crossrope on the call today. So just to give you guys a little bit of background information on Dave; he invented the Crossrope system, which we’ll talk more about in a little bit, when he was sidelined with an injury back in 2011. From his high school days in upstate New York, to the Naval Academy, and then on to a career as a navy pilot, he’s always had a passion for jumping. When he’s not at Crossrope headquarters working on innovative new ways to bring an enjoyable jump rope experience to the masses, which is probably no easy task, you’ll find him at the gym spending time with his wife and two kids. He’s an awesome guy; I’m excited to talk to him today and introduce you guys. Welcome to the show, Dave! Dave Hunt: Thanks so much for having me, I appreciate it. Cassy Joy: Oh my goodness, absolutely. Tell us a little bit about your background; maybe tell us about your personal fitness journey, I’m really fascinated by that. And what interested you in a career dedicated to optimizing the jump rope experience? Dave Hunt: Sure, absolutely. First of all, thanks for the kind intro. I’ve always loved to jump. I think sometimes there are just innate characteristics and passions that people have, and I don’t know where it came from, but ever since I was a little kid, I just remember trying to jump as high as I can. I always gravitated towards jumping sports; I think there’s just some sort of; I don’t know, even if it’s only for a second, some sort of freedom about leaving gravity and trying to jump up in the air. Even though we’re not really made to fly, it’s fun to pretend like we can. So I’ve just always had a passion for jumping, and I pursued that through the sports that I did all the way up through being a high jumper, and a long jumper in college, and I was kind of one of those guys that after I graduated, I couldn’t hand up the spikes. I still had to pretend like I was an athlete and like I was competing, and I found that the jump rope was just a really challenging and engaging way to continue to push my limits. I kind of found it to be that limitless challenge where I could find new skills and tricks and tempos that would really push and challenge me. Along the way, when I was trying new jump ropes and trying new workouts, I discovered heavy ropes, but I kept on breaking them. So it kind of put me in a scenario where I thought the classic, “There’s got to be a better way.” So I think that planted a seed for me.

 Ep. 67: How-to Harness Momentum and Motivation | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 39:54

If gaining momentum and staying motivated towards your new goal or project seem daunting, I've broken down 5 steps to help you both get started and keep going! We're back with our 67th episode of the Fed+Fit Podcast! Remember to check back every Monday for a new episode and be sure to subscribe on iTunes! Find us HERE on iTunes and be sure to "subscribe." Episode 67 Transcription On today’s episode, we’re going to talk about the unsung secret to success and motivation; momentum. How to get it started, and how to keep it going. Cassy Joy: And we’re back with another episode of the Fed and Fit Podcast! I’m so excited to have you here, I’m so excited to be talking to you! This is going to be a great episode. Today’s podcast, the topic for it, is a little bit of a passion project of mine. It’s not just something that I’m fascinated by, but it’s something that I’ve personally struggled with over the years. I tend to be a very introspective person; I guess I just like to figure stuff out, which is {laughs} if you’re a long time listener, you’ve probably realized that about me. I like to take a concept that might seem confusing, or foggy, or difficult to put your finger on, and wrap your mind around. I like to take those kinds of concepts, and I think on them. I spend a lot of time just mentally breaking them down. My sweet husband listens {laughs} to my first drafts of trying to figure things out; that’s what takes up a lot of the time in our long road trips across the country together. Because we live in Texas, and in Texas, everywhere is in driving distance it seems {laughs} to be. I’m in San Antonio, and Dallas Texas, for example, which sounds like it should just be around the corner, is a solid 5, 5-1/2 hours drive. But we drive everywhere, it’s really fun. Anyways, and we spend a lot of time talking about a bunch of different topics that are just brain busters, I guess, for no better way to put it. And one thing that has perplexed me over the years that I’ve been trying to wrap my mind around through high school, in college, post college, and then as a professional who is really working to start a business, and then also just better myself, is how to stay motivated. Right? And not just; that sounds like a very simple question. I don’t think that the answer we’re looking for; when I’m asked that, “how do you stay so motivated to your work?” The answer that I’m going to give them to that question isn’t probably the answer that they’re looking for. Because the answer to how do I stay motivated is a very simple one. It’s I really, really love what I do, and if you can’t tell; if you’re a listener to this podcast, it’s probably very apparent to you. I love this work. Now that gets me excited and keeps me motivated, and I’ll address staying motivated later in this episode. But what that person asking me, “How do you stay so motivated?” what they’re probably wanting to ask is, “how do you even get motivated to start something?” Right? I think that is the real nugget of what people are looking for. They’re looking for that answer. “How do I even get started?” that is the most daunting part. Get started on anything new is difficult, no matter which way you cut it. If it’s new to you, whether it’s new to your body, a new workout; whether it’s a new way of eating, whether it’s learning how to cook, maybe that’s new. Whether it’s; goodness, starting a podcast, or starting a blog, or starting a business. Anything new is going to present some form of difficulty. And how do you confront that difficulty and stay motivated at the same time; right? That is the real question I think people want answered. And that’s a question that I even confront on a regular basis. Because there’s constantly things that I want to do personally more often.

Episode 66 Links: Order Siete Foods tortillas online HERE. Find Siete Foods on Facebook HERE. Find Siete Foods on Instagram HERE. Episode 66 Transcription Today I’m talking with Veronica and Miguel of Siete foods about their mission, current products, which are some pretty incredible paleo-friendly tortillas; advice they have for someone who wants to bring a product to market; rebranding; and their favorite ways to enjoy their awesome tortillas. Cassy Joy: Well, today we are back with an interview that I am just so excited about. I’ve been working with these folks about wanting to bring them on the podcast for a little while, because I just love this company. I love what their up to, I love the mission and the foundation, and it just feels like; I don’t know if they’ll have me, but I feel like I’m a part of their family. I’m claiming them anyways {laughs}. I know they hear that a lot. Veronica Garza: Yes! Miguel Garza: Well you are a Garcia, so. Cassy Joy: That’s true! Veronica Garza: Close enough! Miguel Garza: Yeah, close enough. Cassy Joy: {laughs} Oh good, well that just makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Well I am so excited about introducing you guys to Siete foods; specifically, Miguel and Veronica Garza, two members of the family. I’ll let them tell you more about their company, and their products, and their mission. But if you haven’t already seen Siete foods, they have these incredible paleo-friendly tortillas. They have one that is nut free made with cassava flour, and one that is made with almond flour. And I’m sure these guys can jump in and either correct anything that I’m saying that’s wrong, or add all the good details, but they’re just wonderful. I have a pack in my freezer at all times; heat them up; I love to make breakfast tortilla tacos with them and all kinds of great things. So I’m excited to have you guys on the show, and welcome to the Fed and Fit podcast! Veronica Garza: Thank you! We’re excited to be chatting with you. Miguel Garza: Yeah, thank you so much for having us. Cassy Joy: Yeah, oh my gosh. My pleasure. Ok, well let’s go ahead and jump into it. If you guys want to go ahead and tell us a little bit about Siete foods; maybe your mission, how y’all got your start, what current products you do have, and where folks can find them just to cover the bases, and then we’ll get into other fun conversation topics. Veronica Garza: Ok great. So, our business has been around for a couple of years now. We really got started with an original product; an almond flour tortilla about 6 years ago; actually a little longer now. Maybe 7 years. So I started making an almond flour tortilla 7 years ago; I was living in Laredo for many years. I was dealing with a couple of different autoimmune conditions, one of them being lupus. The other is ITP, which is basically low platelet counts. I wasn’t feeling very well, just always sick; often on medication; prednisone, just not taking care of my health, or just not feeling well in general. One of my older brothers, Rob, had suggested that I start following a grain-free diet. He had done a lot of research, and read that it could alleviate a lot of autoimmune symptoms. So I started doing that, and I did start feeling a lot better. Pretty much all of my lupus symptoms went away.
